I have been researching the Dennington family line to see if I might be related to them.I have a question-The William Dennington born abt 1801 S.C. died bef 1880 Fulton County Arkansas.Up until the 1860 Census for Fulton County AR,shows him married to Mary Farmer[abt 1801 S.C.] But in the 1860 Fulton County AR Census he is with a "Rosiama" or "Rosanna". There are 3 sons listed with them, but they are not the sons of William and Mary[Farmer]Dennington. My question is-did Willaim and Mary divorce and did William start another family in Fulton County,Ar.Any help will be appreciated. Thank you-Peggy parife3@yahoo.com

Re: Family of Jonathan Samuel Dennington and Mary Alice Hambleton

I have that Joseph A. Hambleton's family moved from TN to MO in 1850 where he married Mary C. Jones Smith. In 1890 they moved to Texas and in 1901 to Texas Township, Comanche Co. OK.

I would like to find documents also, but haven't been able to. We think maybe there could be some Indian blood, but haven't been able to find it. The living John Dennington you speak of has been to our Ellison family reunion a while back, but hasn't been in a while. If you speak to him again soon let him know he's always welcome to come again. Good luck with your search and let me know if you ever find anything new as I will do the same.

Sara

Re: Family of Jonathan Samuel Dennington and Mary Alice Hambleton

Sarabear:

Thanks for your information. I think that most of it is the same as I have on this family.

Mary Alice Hambleton Dennington was the younger sister of my great-grandmother, Amanda Elizabeth Hambleton Dowdy. Mary Alice was the only one of the three sisters to survive to old age. Amanda died in Nov 1900 in Charlie, Clay County, TX. Her parents and the Denningtons were living there as well. Amanda and Tucker Dowdy had twins born in Jul 1900. Later that year Amanda died of burns over most of her body when her clothing caught fire. She lived for a short time but left these two babies. The boy, Francis Marion, was wet nursed by a neighbor and survived. The daughter, Amanda Elizabeth Dowdy, was taken in by her maternal grandparents and died a few months later -- apparently of a severe allergic reaction to cow's milk. No proof of that, however. Both Amandas are buried at the Charlie Cemetery in Charlie, Clay County, Texas. I have photos of their graves on my family tree.

Tucker Dowdy, left widowed by the death of his wife and the later loss of his baby daughter, placed the blame for the death of the baby on the Hambleton grandparents. They promptly left the area and moved across the river into Oklahoma and settled in the Temple area.

While we were in that area in the spring of 2007, we went to the county seat of Cotton (formerly Comanche) County and looked up land records. There were many for the Hambletons and also some for Mary Alice Dennington. I had wanted to see what other documents we might find -- such as wills or maybe funeral home records for the deaths of both the Hambletons. Could not locate them in a cemetery in that area. We did not have time to get all of this done though and so I am not sure that I'll ever have that information. I do have a cousin who lives in the Charlie area; he was going to go over and see if he could find it for me but has not yet been able to do so.

I do not know when the name change from Botsford to Temple ocurred. I do know that at the 1910 census it was called Temple though. Comanche County became Cotton County in 1912.

Jonathan Samuel Dennington died after 15 Jun 1900. He is included in the 1900 census with his family so he must have gone to Missouri after that date, where he died of malaria. No online MO Death Certificates going back that far and I have not found him in the Stoddard County Cemetery Book either. I guess he could have died elsewhere in the state but it seems that most of his family was in Stoddard County.

If you ever find anything more on the family, please let me know. I have contact with John Dennington, a direct descendant still living so maybe I can learn more of him as well. If information is available I imagine he would have it.

Thanks again.

Ruth Dowdy-McArthur

Hello I am trying to find into on John Samuel also, but I can give you the info I have.

He was born 1863 in KY and died 1900 in MO from Malaria. I was only told about 4 children between John Samuel and Mary Alice. Edith b: 06/15/1887 in MO., Louis b: 1893 in Clay Co. TX., Joseph b: 1895 Clay Co. TX., Jennie Bell (my great-grandmother)b:1890 Clay Co. TX

After John Samuel died Mary Alice and her father J.A. Hambleton (b:1840 Henderson Co. TN. d: 1910 Temple, OK) placed the children in the Buckner Orphans Home in Dallas, TX in July 1901. Mary Alice got the children back in July 1902 to live w/her in Botsford (now Temple) Oklahoma.

I have more info on Jennie Bell & her spouse & children if you want it.

Further to my earlier posts i've made some progress.

I now have about 140 Dennington's in my tree most of which were born in London, England. My mother, Violet, her Father, Charles and Gfather Arthur Edward were born in Camberwell or Peckham. Before that GGfather Charles in Holborn or Clerkenwell and before that Joseph Jeffrey in Marylebone. So far i can't find any links with the Shoreditch Denningtons but who knows ?
I know of one branch of my family that went to America in 1849, lived mainly in Texas and can trace them up to the present day in Arkansas.
I'd be very interested to know if anyone else has connections with my tree. Hopefully, you can view it on Ancestry "The Life of Riley"
If not please let me know.

Regards

Terry
Kent, England

Hello, Mark. I agree with you that our haplotypes are so greatly different that it's a certainty our lines aren't connected. But that result only applies to your line and mine, and doesn't mean there are no connections at all between the two surnames. Others may find they are a closer match than we are. If more males from both the DENINGTON and the DENNINGTON surnames eventually get tested and post their results at the Ysearch website it would improve the chances of finding lines that are connected. At present, though, we two seem to be the only individuals in the whole world with our specific surnames who have tested.

I'm located in the U.S.A., my ancestors arriving here in 1849 from Clerkenwell, England, and extending back from there at least as far as Marylebone mid-to-late 1700'S.

Terry,

My research has concentrated on Deningtons spelled with one "n". I am aware of five separate families of Deningtons all harking back to the Bethnal Green/Shoreditch area in the early 1800's. I believe at least some of these are related.
There appears to have been another group of Denningtons living in the same area at the same time. At this point I can find no connection between the two.

Regards,
Mark Denington

Hello Mark,
I have a Dennington line which i have traced back to Jeffrey Dennington who was married in St. Marylebone, London in 1794 and appears to have lived in Holborn/ Clerkenwell after that. His son Charles born about 1811 moved to Camberwell, South London between 1831 and 1835. Has this coincided with your research and do you have anything that may coonect?

Many thanks,

Terry

Hello,
I am a descendant of a line of Denningtons, the earliest of which i can trace was Edward born circa 1851-1855. He lived in Stockwell Street, off Old Kent Road, South London according to the 1881 census. Does anyone have any earlier info on this line? I was told by my Grandfather that his Father (Edward) came from Tipperary, Ireland but i don't know how true this is.

Many thanks

Terry

Family of Jonathan Samuel Dennington and Mary Alice Hambleton

I am hoping to find someone with knowledge of this family. Jonathan Samuel Dennington apparently died sometime between 1900 and 1910 while visiting in Missouri. Does anyone know where he is buried?

Mary Alice (Hambleton) Dennington is found in the area around Temple, Oklahoma between about 1910 and 1920, but I cannot seem to locate her in the 1920 census. There are land records in that area documenting her presence at that time. In the 1910 census, I found that she had given birth to ten children, five of whom were still surviving at that time. I can account for nine of those children and four of those still living at the time of that 1910 census.

I would hope very much that someone researching this line can give me information on what happened to Mary Alice and her children. I recently visited Comanche and Cotton Counties, Oklahoma and found land records there for Joseph A. and Mary C. Hambleton, parents of Mary Alice -- their only surviving daughter, but cannot locate her after that time. I find the widowed Mary A. Ogles living with her widowed mother, Mary C. Hamilton, in Comanche County, OK in the 1910 census, along with four Dennington children.

If you have information on this family, please contact me at ruthmcarthur@comcast.net.

Thank you very much.
Ruth Dowdy-McArthur

John:

It has been a long time since I last wrote to you. I've been in Texas and Oklahoma over the past few weeks and done some research in the land records of Comanche and Cotton Counties in Oklahoma during that time. I found quite a few records for both Joseph A. and Mary C. Hambleton and M. A. Dennington, their only surviving daughter. In case you don't recall me, I am a great-granddaughter of Amanda Elizabeth (Hambleton) Dowdy, wife of Henry Franklin Dowdy, Sr.

If you are interested in what I found in the OK deed records, please write. Information I had on Mary Alice was that she re-married but I find her on these deed records as M. A. Dennington throughout. I don't recall where I found that she had re-married but am wondering if you know anything about a second marriage for Mary Alice.

Do you know where she lived following Temple, Cotton County, OK? I believe that her parents are both buried in the Temple area through they do not seem to be listed on any cemetery census in the area. I am in the process of checking with a funeral home in that area.

You can write to me directly at ruthmcarthur@comcast.net. I'd love to be able to see what information you may have on Mary Alice after about 1900.

Ruth Dowdy-McArthur

I suggest we not become bogged down in the 1-N vs. 2-N issue. It can't prove lineage. To really know which line is yours get a genetic genealogy test done and post the results to the database at the Ysearch site for everyone to compare. The site is free. I'm a 2-N spelling (DENNINGTON) and my 67-marker test result is there. There also is a 1-N spelling there (DENINGTON).

Mark
I have a Dennington branch in my family tree and have found that the the use of one or two N's can vary even within the same family. e.g on one census return they have one and the next they have two. I think a lot or the variation may be due to the way the the enumerator thought it was spelt. A lot of the Denningtons came from very poor backgrounds and some were ilitterate. I have marriage certificates signed with a cross! Hope this helps
Jo

My grandfather Albert James Dennington was born in about 1902 and had brothers Edward, Walter, Frederick, James and Richard and sisters Daisy, Doris, Marjorie, Nellie and Lily. Other than Albert I know at least Frederick, James and Richard had children.
Your Pairlee was a sister to my son's g grandmother, Letha. I just started doing research on their father's family (Ellison) recently. Pairlee and Letha's parents were Burl Dennington and Mary Missouri Moody. I would like to hear from you, please contact me at edithtul@yahoo.com.

Paul,

Do you know of a connection between those that spell Denington with one 'n' and those who spell it with two?
My understanding is that they are 'place names' derived from areas of Suffolk.
Does anyone have any idea how far back the two variants go as separate surnames?

Mark Denington, Toronto

British Dennington, bloodline back to Andrew De Dennington 1250

Hi all, I'm a Uk Dennington, and as far as I know my ancestory goes straight back to Andrew De Dennington of Ipswich of the year 1250, not to far from where I live (in the South East Of England).
Funny thing is we obtained a old print of Andrew De Dennington ad we look alike! you might laugh but the Bloodline is that strong, we all look alike, me my uncles, grandfathers etc... but only in the Male side.
I have 2 Uncles.Fathers Name is Denny Dennington, our/my bloodline is Uk only but i know that many denningtons left britain for the U.S.A back in the 19th Century and I am interested in any one who had gone abroad.
My Grandfather lives in Devon, Uk at the Moment but he was from a Big family with 7 brothers.
Any questions? or info please feel welcome to Email me.
Paul Dennington
