Dennis family from Alabama/ Chilton County area

My grandparents were Oliver Jefferson Dennis and Hattie Mae (Terrell) Dennis of Chilton County, Alabama. My father died at 47 and his brother and I lost touch. My father's name was Charles Wayne Dennis and his brothers were James Wallace Dennis and Marshall Dennis. My grandmother, Hattie Mae Dennis, was the daughter of William Terrell and Lucie Jacks, all of Coosa County, Alabama.
I am now in my 40's and trying to find out the origin of the family. My greatgrandparents were William and Donie Dennis of Chilton County. They appear to be of Irish/English decent, with blue eyes and reddish brown hair or light colored hair ( I have a picture of William and Donie) I knew my grandfather and grandmother but was too young to know that i needed to ask about our heritage.
Most of the descendants are deceased and I am not having any luck finding out where the family originated.
I have only one cousin and one brother from this family. My brother and I are in contact, but I have lost my cousin, Sheila Faye Dennis, who might be in the Northeast area of Florida. If you recognonize this family or have any knowledge of origin, please contact me.....Thanks

Benjamin F. Dennis b~1850, Marblehead,MA

I'm trying to trace the Massachusetts Dennis line from my father back as far as I can go, but I'm running into several problems. I'm sure of Benjamin F. Dennis born in 1849 or 1850, who married Caroline S., who gave birth to my great grandfather, Joseph G. in 1876. I also think that a Benjamin F.Dennis, b~1826 was the father of Benj.F.b~1849. Who was Benj F. b.~1826 married to? Deliverance K. Phillips? Elizabeth K.? From there back, it just gets more confusing. In my tentative lineage, I have two more Benjamins (b.1803,1762), then John Dennis b. 1727. Does anyone have the original sources pinned down (not just someone's online family tree)? I was trying to follow the church registers (CR1 vs CR2), but there is some crossover(CR1 toCR2) no matter which direction I follow. I have not had the chance to see the original sources.
Thanks for any help-

My father had a picture in his trunk of Perry Dennis. And one of Robert Dennis on postcard dated 17 JUL 1910 Sapulpa, OK, with the note "cousin of John Heater (John Heater, b. 1883, Jewell Co., KS). There was also a letter from Rob and Perry's mother Sarah Dennis dated 27 FEB 1900, address Buffalo, Wilson Co., KS. I think George was probably Sarah's husband, but not sure. George is mentioned, along with Rob and Perry.
This family has to be connected to one of my surnames Heater, Wilder, Loudon, Borton or Spees.

Can anyone identify this Dennis family? If so, please email me.
Shirley popper@rmi.net

Dennis Family - Milledgeville, GA/Baldwin County

I am hoping to find descendants of my great great grandparents, Marsh and Sara Dennis. They were former slaves who last appeared in the 1880 census in Milledgville along with their children, who are as follows:

Charley, Georgiann, William, Daniel (my great-grandfather), Willis and an unnamed infant boy aged 1 month.

My great-grandfather Daniel Dennis left Milledgville for Savannah in the early 1900s and attended college there for a time. He eventually moved to Claxton, where he taught school and married into the DeLoach family. Unfortunately he lost contact (or broke off contact) with his siblings and we do not know what become of them.

Daniel's Father, Marsh Dennis, may have been owned by Michael Dennis or William Dennis in Putnam County. They were known to have owned numerous slaves. Michael Dennis also owned slaves in Hancock County. The Dennis name is a fairly common name in this region of Georgia.

Any information is greatly appreciated. It is possible that the descendants of Daniel Dennis's brothers and sister still live in the Milledgeville/Baldwin County area.
Montraville was born in 1868 and his father, Van Buren, was born in 1842. I know that Montraville married a Rose Sumpter and Mary Kinkennon and that Van Buren was married to Catherine Clement.
Rescued Photos, DENNIS, SMITH, WHITMER & More, Oblong, IL

As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them. I rescued a box of photos that for the most part, is of the DENNIS Family of Illinois.

I did research on this line, because I have DENNIS in my line, but couldn't connect this line, to mine. What I did find is this:

The 1880 Oblong, Crawford Co. IL census reads:

Samuel Dennis 40
Eliza A. Dennis 38
William F. Dennis 14
Hiram F. Dennis 12
Dora E. Dennis 10
Sarah A. Dennis 7
John W. Dennis 6
Lillie L. Dennis 3
Charles O. Dennis 1

The first photo is of a house, with a family sitting on the porch. It also has a man on the back of a horse, standing there. It's dark and hard to make out, but you can still see it. Written on this is: H.T. Dennis Family, Cherry Valley, Arkansas.

The 1900 census shows the family-Hiram, Lonella, Wilma, Anna and Earnest, living in Mitchell, Cross Co. Arkansas.

H.T. DENNIS was born in Illinois. Wife's name was Lonella/Lowella/Luella, depending on the census. The family ends up back in Oblong Crawford County, IL.

Daughter Anna DENNIS married a SMITH. (Other surnames I've capitalized). I have seven photos grouped together for her.

Two of photos for Anna are of her daughter Earlene Smith-as a baby & as a little girl-adorable!

One photo is a group photo of 10 small children. Written on the back is: Left to Right, Ann Dennis, Wilma Dennis, Ralph HENRY, Earnest Dennis, Zene PRICE, Eunice BEST, D.L. Price, Pearl Best, Fred Henry and Ross Henry. Taken in Oblong, IL.

Two photos are Anna as a young lady. One identifies her as Anna DENNIS, and one identifies her as Anna SMITH.

The last two photos of Anna, were taken when she was a child. One, she's with her brother Earnest and sister Wilma. The other one, she's with Wilma.

The Wilma DENNIS group of pictures. I have two copies of a baby picture that's identified as Wilma DENNIS WHITMER.
(She married Arthur WHITMER). Another copy of the photo, with her brother Earnest and sister Anna is in this group.

Two photos of Wilma as a young lady. One she's alone, in another she's with Anna and two unidentified women.

The next photo is of Wilma and husband Arthur. Maybe a marriage photo? The cardboard frame that it's in has seen better days, but someone wrote their names on it and I'm trying my best to keep it together.

There's a family picture of Wilma, Art and their children (Wilma) Lorene (she went by her middle name), and son Duaine.

I have a photo of Duaine and Lorene as children. Lorene is a baby in this photo. Both of their children were blessed with curly blond hair.

Then there's another photo. I think it's Wilma and a young man-I'm not sure who he is. However, the on the frame someone wrote Fred & Mildred. There was a Fred and Mildred WHITMER in Illiois. This woman could easily pass for Wilma Dennis Whitmer. The young man's ears are much more pronounced than either Art Whitmer or Duaine Whitmer's ears.

Earnest DENNIS is photograped in five photos.

One of him as an infant, I have two copies of.

Then there's one of him with Elmer Carl Dennis. (I'm not sure who he is, if as an infant he might have died, between census's? He doesn't appear with the family in a census.)

One photo, Earnest is posing in a dark outfit and hat. The hat almost reminds me of a Civil War hat, worn by the Union. He's about 5-6. Then I have a large picture of a group of men. On the back is written: Earnest Dennis March 10, 1924 (That's what the date looks like, it's on a crease, where someone bent the photo while shoving it in the box, that I bought it in.) Written on the front is:
Gov. and the T.C. Shop Men Polestine.

The last photo I have for this DENNIS family, (unless I find another one), is of a beautiful dark complected/dark hair & eyes, young lady identified as Hattie DENNIS. In the Oblong, 1900 census, she's living with her parents, Sam'l & Eliza DENNIS. That makes her a sister to Hiram.

I wish I had the amount of information on my DENNIS line, as what I've uncovered on this one.

1850 CENSUS in NY CITY - Mary Elizabeth Dennis Gaffney

I have a direct ancestor of that name who was the wife of James Gaffney from County Roscommon in Ireland, and they also had two infant daughters and lived in the 14th Ward of Manhattan in 1850. Mary was born in Ireland in 1826 and died in Newburgh NY in 1898. I would guess that she married Gaffney between 1846 and 1848, but don't know where (Ireland or the US?). Does anyone have a verifiable family connection to her?

Allen Dennis, Mrs. Allen Dennis killed in tornado

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 12 May 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

STORMS IN TEXAS

St. Louis: A special to the Republic from Dallas, Texas, says:

The tornado in northwest Texas last night killed Mrs. Mary Wagley, her daughter Anna and George Anthony at Moran. A dozen persons were severely but not fatally injured. At Putnam one man was killed and one woman injured. Their names have not yet been learned. A negro cabin was swept into the Brazos River five miles above the Texas & Pacific Railroad crossing and three negroes were drowned.

A wreck train was blown from the railroad track near Crescent and George Sommers and William Apple, negro laborers, were drowned. Twenty houses were wrecked at Moran and half a dozen at Putnam. Hundreds of head of live stock are reported killed in Shackleford and adjoining counties. Crops were badly injured by the wind, rain and hail. Wire service is still badly crippled and reports as to further fatalities are still incomplete, but it is believed that lives were lost in isolated places that will swell the total number to twenty. Railroad property has suffered heavily in the northwest Texas storm area.

A special to the Republic from Houston, Texas says:

Storm news is coming in very slowly, but it is certainly known that there have been many deaths in different parts of the state.

Among the known dead are: Will Perry, of Harrisburg, killed by lightning; Mrs. Allen Dennis, G. W. Mason and child of S. T. Harper at Goldthwait; Luther Rudd, Allen Dennis, Mrs. S. F. Harper and child, and Joe Griffith are also badly hurt at the latter place. Damage to cotton and corn crops will be heavy. The damage to property will run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

At Ruby, John Mullin’s house was wrecked. Mr. and Mrs. Mullin were carried nearly 100 yards by the wind. Mrs. Mullin is believed to be fatally hurt. Wesley Spurlock, 14 years of age was killed.

At sunset, nearly twenty buildings were wrecked, but no persons fatally hurt.
Mary Dennis Lawson wife of John Lawson

1850 census Morgan County, Kentucky lists Mary age 29 living with her mother, Elizabeth, age 63 and siblings James age 27, and Angelina age 14, all born in Kentucky.

From Morgan County, Kentucky Marriage record - Mary was age 35, single, born Bath County, Kentucky when she married John Lawson who was 28 years old and born in Morgan County.

Kentucky Death Record - November 6, 1858 - age at death 38 years, 8 mo., daughter of Samuel Y. Dennis, born about 1820 in Bath County, Kentucky, death location and residence location both Morgan County, Kentucky.

From John Lawson's Civil War pension file which included his wife, Wyatt, widow's pension file I found included the following notorized statement:

State of Kentucky
County of Fleming
Personally appeared before me this February 15, 1912. Martha Luman whose P.O. address is Wallingford, KY. who being duly sworn by me states, that she was raised by Dr. Dennis a Brother of Mary Lawson, the first wife of John Lawson. WO974785. Who was a Private late of Co. D 7th Ky. Calvalry No. 974785 and that Mary Lawson died in Novenber 1858. I know the above facts from personal knowledge and observation. I futher state that I have no interest in this claim.
Mrs. Martha (her X mark) Lewman
Witness E. Gardner
State of Kentucky
A. D. Carpenter
County of Fleming
Subscribed and Sworn before me by Martha Luman this February 15, 1912.
seal
Notary Public
My Commison Expires January 10th. - 1914
Curtis Carpenter
(Stamped by Pension Office Feb 20 1912)
(Note that Martha's last name is spelled Luman in the typed part of the statement but in the signature part it is spelled Lewman.
Reading the pension file documents that pertained to Wyatt's widow's pension claim, the death of John's wife, Mary, needed to be proved in order that there not be duplicate claims for John's pension. Martha's statement must have been accepted as Wyatt did get the widow's pension.
A couple other thoughts on this:
Muses Mill,Fleming County, Kentucky is where John's brother, David, and sister, Nancy Jane (Lawson) Banfield lived in their later lives.
There is a Martha Luman, wife of James, listed in the 1900 census in Muses Mill, Fleming.

Dennis family in Scioto, Pickaway, Ohio

Made a possible breakthrough today! The puzzle pieces are close to fitting but not exact so if anyone has any clues about the following family I'd love to hear them.

What I know:
George Dennis m. Mary ? (believe Ritter)
He was born April 7, 1843, Ohio and died Dec 3, 1931, KS *death certificate and headstone

I have lots of census records on he and his wife in Jasper Co., Iowa and Phillips Co., KS in later years but could not trace him back to his origins in Ohio. Many George Washington Dennis's were around Ohio with a similar age so the census records were clues but not conclusive.

Today I found an internet site listing the history of the 90th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War (I researched this because of various leading clues). The book published in 1902 lists the addresses of surviving members of the division. George Dennis was listed as living in Pleasant Green, KS. This has got to be him. Pleasant Green is a church in the middle of the countryside nowhere near a town but less than a mile from the cemetary where my George is buried, and no other George Dennis are listed in the census there then.

The next connection is that the men from Company A of the 90th Ohio were from Pickaway County, Ohio. From Census records in Pickaway County there is a George of the correct age living with parents George and Ester (in 1950) and George and Susan (in 1960). Also living with him in 1950 was a John Powell (age 22). Also in 1960 there is an Ananias Powell (age 62) living with the family. According to my George's death certificate his parents were George and Martha Howell.

I believe (and hope) the Powell and Howell are the same families. John Powell is shown living with another George Dennis in 1910. This is a younger George and I believe my George's cousin. He would be the right age to be the George Dennis son of Elisha Dennis also in the 1860 Pickaway County Census. It seems probable that there is a family connection between these families. I know how death certificates can often be misleading since it can be based solely on a surving family members memory, and this side of my family has extremely little knowledge of the family history.

I have ordered the military records of George and hope to get more info from them, but would be interested if anyone else knows something that might tie these groups together.

thanks
She married Peter Gooley, sometimes called John Gooley, and their children were James, Ida, Daisy or Dollie and Nina. Ida married Charles Brunne. If anyone knows of this Mary Ann, I'd appreciate it if you will contact me at dickinson869@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Alfonso DENNIS Detroit MI 1906-at least 1930

Looking for anyone with a connection to or additional information on Alfonso DENNIS.

He first appears in the 1920 census with his wife May and sons David, born about 1918 and Rocco, born about 1919. In the 1930 census, his name changes to Alphonso and his wife's name changes to Anna but they are still living in Detroit. Also living with Alphonso and Anna in 1930 are three children, first listed as foster children but changed to lodgers. Their surnames are RUGGIRELLO. Alphonso & Anna's children from the 1920 census are not living with them. I don't know if they were living elsewhere or if they have passed away.

From the census, I've learned that he came to the US in 1906. He was born in Italy about 1888. His wife, Mary, May or Anna was born in October 1898.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. If you have a connection I would happy to share more information on his wife and her family.

Thanks,
John in Racine

I have been under the impression, based on books such as "Dennisania",
and others research that the first Dennis in America was Robert
Dennis, the master of the ship "True Love", who arrived in Rhode
Island in 1635. I have now been presented with information that shows
a William Dennis who was born in 1595 in England had a son named
Robert born in Yarmouth, Mass., in 1617.
I would appreciate any comments by list members who can verify,
clarify or refute this new information.
Henry Dennis family from Delaware and Penn 1770's

Is anyone familiar with this family? Quote: "Two who refused to enter the revolt b/c fighting violated their Quaker creed were Henry Dennis, then 55, and his 18 y.o. son John. They prob were descendents of Quaker Joseph Dennis from Woodbridge, New Jersey who had become a pioneer settler at Quakertown some 60-70 yrs before. Father and son took refuge within British lines at NY and were never to see their estates again. Henry died a few yrs later while encamped at Staten Island. John took up arms with the British...etc" Eric R. Dennis, 1974, "The Dennis Saga".

I would very much like to know more abt Henry, and who were his wife and other children?? Where is/was Quakertown located?

Separate source is that they are listed as from Buck County, PA at this site:
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/loy/muster/pa1778.shtml

Dennis Line

I think I am also descended from the Dennis Line. My gggg grandmother was Elizabeth Dennis, born 1780 in Cookstown, Burlington Co, NJ. She married Stacy Challender on 1/1/1800 in Monmouth NJ. They had 5 children: Samuel, Rachel, William, Thomas, John.

Elizabeth & Stacy moved to Ohio in 1848 and she died there in 1852.

Is she any relation to the original Dennis line?

Any information would be very helpful.

Please email at: rdelongs@twcny.rr.com
