I was interested to hear of the reference to a clan of Denslows in Surrey. I have traced my tree back to a John Denslow (1788 - 1863) married Frances ? (1797). They had a daughter, Emma Denslow (1825 - 1892) who married Alfred Kirk. If anyone has picked up on these people at all I would be interested in hearing from them.

From the Walter Palmer Society, they claim "Sparbeck". I think many of misspellings come from people not interpreting the old Palmer handwriting method correctly. Everything I've read in census is "Sparbeck".
I've just found this thread and have read it through. My 4x G.Grandmother was Charlotte Denslow born c. 1790 (not sure where or to whom) and she married Jonathan Moon at St. Geo's Hanover Square in London 7/4/1811 (she recorded as being a spinster of St. Mary's Islington).
I realise that this is neither Devon or Dorset related but it wouldn't surprise me at all if her family originated from the west country somewhere - so many Denslows seem to have done. There did seme to have been quite a clan of Denslows in Surrey in the 1700s & 1800s though.

If any of this rings any bells with anyone at any time, please let me know. Good luck with your research. If I get back to any Devon or Dorset connections, I'll let you know!

Hello
I've just found this thread. I was born a Denslow and can trace my family back definitely to about 1790 to a John Denslow, a carpenter born in Membury, Devon. I feel there must be some connection to the Dorset Denslows - it's not such a common name - but haven't managed to get further back, yet!
Coming forward from John, he had a son (John) also born Membury, about 1813 who married Mary Type. He became a black/white smith and moved to Greenham Crewkerne in Somerset. Their son (John!) became a coachmaker, moved to London, St Pancras, and married Clara Jane Sparke (nee Greenfield, or possibly Isted). Their son, Joseph was my grandad. He married Kate Williams and became a stonemason. Don't know if any of these names mean anything to you?
Would be interested if you've managed to find out any more about the Dorset Denslows.

Did not realise you had responded.....sorry for the long wait.

I am not sure where to start. I do not have a great deal of info but the basics are as follows.

Edward Denzilow (as spelt on marriage cert) was the father of Elizabeth Denzilow who married a Brewer. I think Edward Denzilow was born about 1781 (as per census info) and that he was married to a Joanna/ Joane. I also have reference to a son named Benjamin and as a witness to the marriage there is a Mary Denslow (no idea who she is). I cannot find anything about Edwards parents or any marriage to a Joanna.

I have also seen many versions for the spelling of the name Denslow.

Basically this name is long removed from my family as the Brewers then became Quests and then the Quests became Yandles...to me a Rich before marriage. However it is still a line I would like to try and search because it is still family.
My Nan is the link here and moved from Dorset/ Devon in 1940's to South Wales where we all mainly still live.

Any pointer in the right direction would be great it you know anything about an Edward equally if you would like to see the line from them I would be happy to mail you a gedcom.

Many Thanks
Hayley

Hayley
Thanks so much for your reply. Haven't learnt much more than I spoke of above - I think I am a descendant of Hugh Denslow, 1572-1620 and Bridget Elliot - marriage 1605 Allington, near Bridport, Dorset. Denslow family seems to have plenty of sons so can't get any further going forward but have definitely tracked backward to Thomas Denslow - born around 1780, Soldier in Napoleonic War, died 1819 Chardstock. I was born a Denslow and live in the south of England - have visited the 'Denslow' areas of Dorset often. I'd love to hear from you and will share anything I have that is useful to you too. Can still be reached by the email address supplied but will reply using current one.
Anne

Dear Mary,
I have run both lines with rather complete data hoping that one day I will find a connection - I would surely like to get what information you have collected to date just to review it and perhaps send the info I have. My one line is probably very similar to yours and the other goes back to Giovanni DeAngelo who left Italy (born 1514) for greater religious freedom in England. My wife's line is also of English origin and goes back to William The Conqueror - she has 13 connections to the Mayflower - I would call that being a real yankee. By the way my family comes from Boonville where I was born in 1928 on Lower Schyler Street. Your research is of hreat interest to me.

Sincerely, Jack Gehringer at jllg@earthlink.net in Lakewood, WA.
I to am of the New York Denslows and live in the area where many of them first settled in New York State. I have done extensive research on this end of the family and will be ready in about another month to upload my data base onto the web. I want to make sure all is verified. I have also done research at the New England Historical Society where there is a book called The Denslows of North America. We here in upper New York State are of the New Haven Branch. All your names are familiar and I will be happy to share any and all information. You have to understand that winters in this area are hard so Cemetery visits have to wait till spring but anything I can help with don't hesitate to e-mail. By the way Charles and Martha had 8 Children.

Good Luck in your searches this is a very interesting family.
Mary

Is there any one out there who knows a bit about what happened to the ones who stayed behind in Dorset? I'd be really pleased to hear from you!

Go to message board under name "Dinslow"--I left three extensive posted comments on the only two messages there, this date. Briefly I have the Denslow line back to 1577 to Nicolas Densloe and wife Elizabeth Doling in England. The Densloe migrated to America in 1634 aboard the ship Hopewell to Ct.--Mass--ME--Pontiac, Ill--.Ark--KS--CA

The name changed from Densloe->.Dinslow-->Denslow

Clinton, Actually I'm looking for a Druse. Mary Druse married Henry Stansell who was born in 1786 in Stone Arabia, NY. He moved in 1789 with his father, Nicholas, and family to Wayne Co. NY where they were the first settlers. I'm assuming (a dangerous thing in this business) Henry and Mary were married in the area of Wayne Co, NY. She evidently died and he remarried. It is possible three sons were born to them - James, Richard and Otis - I don't have dates for them as I do for the four children he and Myra White had. Henry moved to Green Oaks, Livingston Co. Michigan about 1830. I'll appreciate any clues you may have. . Thank you
Dorothy Hagerty
Hi Jack, Do you have any information regarding a "Mary Druse" who married Henry Stansell. Henry was born in Stone Arabia, NY in 1786 and moved in 1789 with his father, Nicholas, and family to Wayne County NY where they were the first settlers. Henry married again to Myra A. White and had four children - 1816,1818, 1821, and 1830. There are three children I have no dates for - James, Richard and Otis - who could be Mary Druse's children. Henry and Myra White (could be Mary) moved to Michigan about 1830 where they died. I shall appreciate any information you might have. The Ancestry.com records indicate 8 and 10 children in two different families but no names. Mary could be one of them - the dates would work.
Thanks,
Dorothy Hagerty

James Druse and Rachel Denslow were married in 1791 in Otsego. There is indication of a child born in 1792. Could my Mary be child number two?? Henry's grandfather, William, was an early settler in Springfield. Hope to hear from you. Dorothy Hagerty

I just found the marriage record for Mary Druse and Henry Stansell - 20 Sept 1812 in Springfield, Otsego, New York. James and Rachel were married in 1791 in Otsego.
