My grandmother was Joyce Eileen Major. Her first husband (before my grandfather) was Charles E. Dent born los angeles in 1913 who served with the 165th Signal Photo Company. They married here in England 28 July 1945. We know nothing more about Charles after he had the marriage annulled, and he moved to Vegas. This is a long shot, but if he re-married and had a family then I'm keen to find them and see if they're interested in the letters etc. we have.
Thanks Dave. my email is dvc214@gmail.com

Hello, old message
Nathan Smoot Dent and Juliana Chapman are in fact the parents of William Hatch Dent born July 15, 1827 in Charles County, Maryland. His wife is Margaret Ann Gregg and they can be found in the 1880 census in Posey County, Indiana.
I am descended from their tenth child, Louis Addison Dent.
A Dent family Bible and other documents are at the University of North Carolina Library.
julie.m.hilton@gmail.com

After reading all of these -

There is no Jeff Dent in Columbia Co, GA - that I have found - Based on the census records. he most likely was born in Johnson Co, GA -

Nor can I find any connection to the Dent's in Columbia Co - but that doesn't mean it does not exist - I recommend you start your research in Johnson Co, GA - and you can learn alot based on the little you know know - and you can start eliminating other DENT lines.

As for the Nancy Dent in Columbia Co, - she was born in 1805 GA, her parents were Ben and Peggy, sister Sibi, and brothers Abraham and Ben - Nancy had 7 children Dennis, Eliza, John, Laura, Daniel, Victoria and Henry Clay.

The DENT' are one of the African American families from Columbia Co, GA that I am researching.

I am searching for relatives of William Dent who married Anne Coleman Circa 1908. They were living in Kinsale in the early 1900's according to baptisim records. William was in the merchant navy.
Also a sponsor for one of the children was a Jeremiah Coleman - could be brother/father/uncle of Anne. I also belive that Anne has a younger sister Mary E Colman. Many thanks

Hello,
I've just seen on a thread on Ancestry that you have a chart of the Dents in Burnley. I'm trying to work out the different Dents from 1750-1850, in Burnley, and I'm getting very confused as they all seemed to call their sons either John, Henry, Robert, James or Thomas! My Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was John Dent (1778-1827), but I'm stuck on his father Robert Dent. Do you have this Robert Dent (christened 9 Dep 1744) on your chart?
Regards
Jacmel Dent
Hello,
I see from an old Ancestry thread that you have information on the Dents of Burnley.
I've recently started researching my father's line of Dents and have got back as far as my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather, John Dent of Burnley (1778-1827), who was the publican at the Boot Inn in Burnley - now the Yates Wine Lodge - and have discovered that his father was a Robert Dent. I have found on the IGI site, a Robert Dent who was christened in Burnley in 1744 and I wonder whether you have any information about this man or his family?
Also, my John Dent (publican) was buried in Burnley one day after his brother, Robert Dent, on 31 March 1827. Robert was 44 and my John Dent was 49. This seems curious to me: do you know what went on there?
All the best,
Jacmel Dent

Hi again Al,

I need to sort out my Dents of Burnley. It seems they were breeding like rabbits in the 1800s and they all gave their children the same names, so it gets very confusing. I'm going to work out a proper tree for that lot, so if I find out more about your branch I'll let you know.

Interesting to hear that your Dents emigrated to NZ. That must have been one hell of a decision to make, given there were no telephones, email or planes: it must have been like a final "I'll never see you again" farewell. Presumably you've checked the outgoing passenger lists to see when they left the UK?

All the best,

Jacmel Dent

I am more interested in his descendents than his ancestors as he married into the Ingham family and that is the family that I am related to.

The Dent family emigrated to New Zealand and settled in the Ashburton area.

Cheers

Al

Hello,
Have you found all your info on James Dent - I see your message is quite old now? I'm researching my Dent family who seem to have been in Habergham Eaves, in Burnley, at the same time as your James Dent. I've been up to the Records Office in Preston, which holds all the Burnley facts, and my Dents (John Dent, publican of The Boot Inn, Burnley from about 1810-1827, and his family) all seem to be closely connected to yours. Perhaps they had a common Grandfather? This last week I discovered that John Dent, above, had a father called Robert but I don't have further info on this man yet. Perhaps my John Dent was a brother of your James's father? Do let me know if you've found out more.

Thanks, JD

Dave,

Thanks for the info, but am not sure it's my Dents. Henry's family was from Yorkshire originally. I have discovered that his father was John Dent, of Tickhill, Yorkshire, England and Mary (Rogers) Dent of Sheffield. Henry came to the US in 1871 according to the 1900 census, and, while I'm not certain, probably through Canada. Another brother, John, married a woman from Ontario, and Henry married a Jean Cowan also originally from Canada. I recently found an interesting lead to a death of a John Dent, who could be Henry's father, in Toronto, but, again, am not certain. The birth date and place may match, but that's all I've got. I would be interested in more specifics on your info, as it still could be the right ones, or others in the family.

Ron

I have a little more information on this family. I found a reference to their arrival on a ship from Liverpool to Boston in 1862. All the children were listed with the correct ages. Henry Thomas Dent was not on this ship. Family oral history suggests one brother ended up in Australia. Maybe Henry went to Australia.
I have not been able to positively locate William or George in Canada.
Dave

Ron

My Henry Thomas Dent was born in Northamptonshire to George Wardle Dent and Mary (Holman). George was born Dec. 24, 1808 in Edinburgh to George Wardle Dent (writer) and Elizabeth Phillips. I suspect George Sr. was from Yorkshire and have a reference to a George Wardle Dent age 30 in the 1810 York Assize. Not sure why a solicitor from Edinburhg would be accused of highway robbery, but I guess he may not have been the first lawyer to get on the wrong side of the law!

I have done extensive research on George jr and his descendants, but have not been able to learn much about George sr. I have been to Edinburgh and hoped to find a directory of solicitors, barristers, etc in Edinburgh 1808 ish with no luck. I have posted much of this on ancestry.com.

Dave

I am looking for this family if anyone has any information. They lived in Marshalltown Iowa for a year in roughly 1983 or 84. Gay worked for Emerson; they were from the Leicester area and had family there. Anne would be about 38 yrs old now, Philip a year or two older than her.
Thomas Lewis Dent---moved to Mississippi County, MO

Hi!

I recently received three deeds indicating that my 3rd gr grandfather Thomas Lewis Dent, moved from Pope County, IL in 1895 or very early 1896. The deeds also indicate that he was alive in January of 1896. I can't find his name in any 1900 census, so the odds are high that he died between 96 and 1900.

1)January 10, 1895; grantor T.L. Dent, C.M. Dent, Martha Dent, Ellen Dent, all of Union Precinct Pope County, IL; grantee H.G. McCormick of McCormick Precinct, Pope County, IL.

2)January 10, 1895; grantor T.L. Dent of Union, Pope County, Il; grantee M.C. Dent of Union, Pope County, IL.

3)February 11, 1896; grantor T.L. Dent of Anniston, Mississippi County, MO; grantee J.W. Womack of Pope County, IL.

I don't know why he moved to MS County, MO. So far I've been unable to find any relations in that county. He was born about 1825, so why I a man of that age and a widower would pack up and move is hard to understand.

Robert Schneider

I have a newspaper clipping (undated) re this Dent family which is part of my Dent family genealogy records. It says: Dent-Clayton "The marriage of Miss Jean Cowan, daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Thomas Dent, of this city, to Mr Fred Clayton of Ann Arbor, too place in Detroit, Sunday afternoon, May 16, at the Highland Park Presbyterian parsonage, Rev. J.D. McDonald performing the ceremony. Mr and Mrs Clayton left immediately for Ann Arbor, where they will reside at 332 E Jefferson Street.
The announcement goes on to mention that LouAnna Baker hosted the party in honor of Jean. It goes on to say that the bride is an "esteemed Midland young lady and Mr Clayton is the son of Mr and Mrs Walter Clayton recently of Midland, but now of California".
I don't know how this connects to our family, which is from Lincolnshire>NY>Ohio>Illinois>Wisconsin that I know of.

Hi, James Dent is my great great great grandfather. I believe He and his wife travelled to New Zealand aboard the Golconda Ship in 1862 "http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzbound/go..." They settled in Nelson and then in a farming area known as Lauriston. There is an article about james in the cyclopedia of New Zealand which was published in 1903.
Re: England to Ohio

The following was written up about my ancestor Susan(nah) Dent & her husband William Pell(s).

Note: the spelling of William Deut is incorrect. It should have read William Dent.

Norfolk Chronicle - July 23, 1836

To the Editor of the Norfolk Chronicle

Sir,-
I beg permission to occupy a corner of your newspaper to direct the situation of the public to a paper now rculating in city and country, entitled, A true and correct copy of a letter from Richard Henshaw, who emigrated with his wife and five children from the town of Holt, in Norfolk, in the beginning of April last, directed to his sister, now living in Holt, and particularly requesting her to publish the same, as a warning to his fellow countrymen in England against emigrating to America; giving a faithful and particular account of the sufferings endured in their voyage, and the number of children that perished on
board the vessel from sickness and suffocation (16 out of 37). The miseries endured by these poor deluded wanderers after landing at Quebec, not half of them being able to obtain employment, but wandering through the wild woods of Canada, and perishing in the woods through hunger and want. The whole being the most faithful description of these
poor deluded emigrants ever published. This pretended letter is dated “Longtown, near Montreal, Upper Canada, May 20, 1836.
Why the town of Holt should be chosen by this scribbler to fasten his forgeries upon, I know not; but as regards the emigration from thence, the following are the facts: On the 1st and 2nd of April last, 58 persons embarked at Yarmouth on board the Tulloch Castle, with about 392 others from the neighbouring parishes. No letter has at present been
received from any of these parties; but, fortunately, on the day before this printed paper made its appearance there, a letter was received by William Deut, of Holt, from his daughter, the wife of William Pells, of Briston, who went to America on board the William Ritchie, which sailed
from Yarmouth about ten days after the Tulloch Castle. From this it appears, that on reaching what the letter calls the Quarantine Ground, below Quebec, on the 1st of June (11 days before the date of the pretended one from Upper Canada), the writer met there her old neighbour from Holt, whom she describes as being in excellent spirits. It also appears, that only one death occurred during the passage in the two ships, and that was of a child of Edward Fuller, of Holt, which was in a very sickly state at the time of mbarkation. By comparing the heading of this publication with the contents of this letter, the gross falsehood of the whole will be sufficiently apparent, particularly when it is added, that no person of the name Henshaw has ever been known to reside in Holt.
It is surely a matter of great regret, viewing this subject as regards the public at large, that such an attack upon the institutions of the country and upon the character of parish officers, such an attempt to draw gain from the credulity of the ignorant, such a violation of truth,
and such a wanton disregard of the feelings of the numerous families connected by natural ties with the multitudes who have left this country for America, should be out of the reach of punishment. The poor laws of England, the paper says, “are most oppressive” and “the main cause of driving so many wretches from their home and country”, and it is
recommended to be shewn to all “who may be deluded by pretended letter, representing America as a paradise, which are “got up by interested parties to deceive the unwary and tear them from their homes. In my opinion , the poor laws of England, with all their imperfections, are an honour to the country, and therefore I defend them not; but the conduct of parish officers in regard to emigration may be liable to misrepresentation. As far as my knowledge of circumstances goes (for though a parish officer, I have had nothing to do with the management of the poor), I should affirm, that the emigration from this part of the country has arisen entirely from the inclination of the persons going out, and neither from compulsion nor the solicitation of parish authorities. In this town a family was left behind, because the man said be put down his name to please his wife, and not of his own will - a family since gone at its own expense; and in the parish of Wood Dalling, after the names of the persons had been entered for emigration,
and the parish officers had acquired the power to compel it or refuse relief, the whole were allowed to be withdrawn, though the names were afterwards voluntarily re-entered, and all went. The desire of bettering their condition has been the principal cause of the removal of so many of our cottage families; and this has been excited, not by
pretended letters, but by communications from friends and
acquaintances, who had previously endured the perils of the voyage, and been compensated by plenty and independence. I have only to observe further, that the state and people of British America are still more grossly libeled by this publication than our own; but with that I have nothing to do; my sole object being to prevent the mischief it is
calculated to occasion, by making the poor dissatisfied with the laws, and distrustful of their superiors; and by raising doubts and anxieties in the minds of those whose friends and relatives are seeking ampler means in a more thinly populated country. I am Sir, you most obedient
servant.
Holt, July 19, 1836. J.A.S. Shalders.

WANDA SINCLAIR
Rexdale, Ontario, Canada
wanda_sinclair@hotmail.com

Re: James Dent (b abt 1827- Habergham Eaves, Lancashire)

Hi there

I know that James Dent's father was named William. That's based on the marriage certificate I have for James and Ruth. However, my interest is in Ruth so I have quite a bit of information on her ancestors.

Ruth was also known as Rosey. Probably a nickname. Her parents were Jonathan Ingham and Mary Emmett. She came from a large family. She had brother's William and Jonathan. There was another William born much later so my thought is that the first brother may have died young. Not sure though since this is back in the early 1800's and there is not a lot of info to go on. She had sisters, Mary, Alice, Margaret, and Esther.

Again I don't have any info on Mary Emmett since my interest is the Ingham's.
Jonathan's parents were William Ingham and Mary Thompson. They all lived around Habergham Eaves. I have info on Jonathan's siblings and William's father was Lawrence Ingham. Don't know who William's mother is yet.

Contact me at alwiensc@pgonline.com and I can give you more info than space permits here.

Cheers

Al
