Death of William Denver, Mobile, Alabama 1859

Mobile, Alabama Newspaer

Sunday, January 18, 2009
From 1859:

"Death of Wm. Denver — It is our melancholy task to announce the death of Wm. Denver , a partner in the house of L Merchant & Co. He was an enterprising, upright and correct man in all his dealings, and for the last ten years a citizen of Mobile, beloved and respected by all who knew him. His remains were, on yesterday evening, followed to the grave by the Rifle Company, and a large number of relatives and friends."

Not my line, just sharing.

Denvers - Denvirs - Denver - Denvir...

Hi,
I have a very missing link in my family!!My great grandfather was elusive to say the least. He was known as James Denvers, James Denver, James Denvir. He was born approx 1872, he claims in Manchester, England, although we can find no proof. He was married to Elizabeth Jones - again, no proof. he was an electrical engineer - the family saying was that he 'sold electricity to the US'. I know he visited the US at least twice, and that he travelled on the Oceanic. He visited new York and Pennsylvania. In 1921 he disappeared from the family - no-one knows to where - my grandad received 3 postcards telling him to look after his mum, but it is impossible to tell where they were sent from. In the time he did live with my g grandmother he fathered 5 children, 3 survived. In this time there are blanks on the local census, where he was absent from the family home. I am wondering whether he left finally to live in the US, and whether he either started a new, or actually already had an existing family there. (Or anywhere else!!)
I realise this is a long shot, but thought smeone may be aware of a James Denvers with a past!
Thank you
Mia
There is a file in the local records office from St Beghs, which is basically a photocopy of their early records, and is not indexed so you need to spend some time reading every entry. As for original records, you need to write to the church - Maud...the parish secretary was really helpful when I wrote to her, asking for info on Denvir's, and sent me photocopies of births, death and marriages etc, with a typed list of names which may have been relevant. The address is St Beghs Priory Church, Coach Road, Whitehaven, Cumbria, and the pp is Fr Matthew Carney.
I have info for at least 3 brother - Richard, Hugh, and one other who were all b Ireland, between 1814 and 1821, and who were living in Whitehaven by 1841 census, but have no record of their parents, unfortunately....still searching tho!
I could take a look at the records in the records office for you when I am there next, but would need some idea of names/ dates etc.
Mary

I'm looking for a Catherine Denvir who marries a John QUIN and moves to Whitehaven. They were probably Catholics as none of their children appear in Whitehaven's Anglican church batismal registers - unfortunately I haven't been able to see St Begh's registers.

Catherine and her husband John QUIN (he was born around 1829 in Ireland) had a son William QUIN born 18th March 1860.

I haven't found their marriage in England so I'm guessing they married in Ireland.

Have you come across her?

NEED OBIT. ON "Tillie" P.W. (GLadys) Smedley

Were does one find an obit. on the above referenced person? DOD was 2/14/73. Burial was 2/17/73 in Denver, CO. Long-time resident of Denver, CO (since 1921 & before, since her first husband was a Monfort). Maiden name: Gladys Poe Waters. She married Chester Earl Smedley in 1921. I cannot even bring up a S.S. Death Record for her on S.S. Sites on internet -- Rootsweb and Ancestry.com Gladys' DOB was Oct. 13, 1883. (Part of the problem may be the way it is listed on the record. The above in the Subject--Tillie P.W. (Gladys) Smedley is the one on the funeral home record. Tillie apparently was a nickname.) I've tried Gladys Poe Smedley & a number of combinations for listing of Death Record--just a summary, and find nothing. I sometimes wonder if the "bureaucrats" do these things to people on purpose. (Either that or they give women short shrift--I don't have any trouble finding the mens' records but in CO, can't find the women's.)

Dear Charles,

Do you have a time frame when Dora Denver was born or came from N. Ireland? From Griffith's valuation it appears that all the Denvers in the 1850s were in Northern Ireland, the majority of them from County Down (yes, Belfast area.) I'd be interested in hearing from you and perhaps we might be talking about the same family. By the way, what was your great grandfather's name? Please write me at tempqedetc@aol.com.

Willian was born April 14th,1868.Calais, Maine. Died August 13th,1927 at Gordon Wisconsin. He married at the age of 26 to Martha Evline(Mattie)Paulson she was either 15 or 21. I'm not sure. They were married in 1893 at Gordon, Douglas County,Wisc.Martha died February 25th 1920. Both William and Martha were buried in the Barnes Township cemetary.William John Denver's father was John Denver. His mother Sarah Duncan. Don't have the marriage date. They were both from Canada. John Denver, I believe got his Citizenship in 1867. Martha's parents were John Paulson from Canada, not sure of birth. He died April 27th,1918 at Barnes.Buried Barnes Township Cemetary. Martha(Maudie)Odell was from Canada. Died February 24th,1918 at Barnes. Buried Barnes Township Cemetary. John and Martha were married April 27, 1918.
William and Martha(Mattie)had 11 children. I have most dates of birth and death.William Melvin Denver,John Dewey, Albert Richard, Frank Earl,Theodore Roosevelt,Helen Evelyn(My Grandmother),Ruth Elsie, Pearl Elizabeth,Blanche Martha,Lucelle Catherine,Arthur Woodrow(Who was Adopted after the death of his mother in child birth, I'm guessing at this because the hospital papers for his birth and Martha's death are 10 days apart. Authur was adopted, and his name became Keith Gransinger. Most of these dates come from my Grandmother, and she wrote everything down. That ofcourse doesn't mean she could't have made any mistakes.

Looking for information on my grandfather's cousin, Mrs. J. E. Pittman who was living in Denver, Colorado at the time of her father's death in May, 1917. Two daughters are listed as survivors in his obituary. One is Mrs. J. E. Pittman. His daughters were Edna McGonigal b. abt. 1883, and Anna McGonigal, b. abt 1885, but the obituary does not identify which one is Mrs. Pittman. I suspect it is Edna, because she would probably have been listed first in the obit because of being the elder, but who knows? Any clues appreciated. Vanette
