Looking for relatives of great-grandfather Gustave Depauw

Gustave was born in Ghent, Belgium around 1862. He married Mary de Graeve (daughter of Consta de Graeve and Louise Wante) around 1890. They came to the U.S. around 1893 and lived in South Boston, Massachusetts. Mary died in 1906 in Boston and in 1909 he married Jennette Johanna De Meester. They had 8 children: Gustave (Ray), Arthur, Louise, Jeannette (my grandmother), Edward, Clarice, Leon and Vincent. He died in 1931 in Boston. I am looking for the names of Gustave's parents or any siblings.

My email is maytm@comcast.net. We did not visit relatives unfortunately - I am sure there are some around. We were only there for a couple of hours. I was living in Germany for a couple of years and when my brother came for a visit we went over to Belgium and Holland for a few days.

I would love to exchange info. I had at one time put all the info I had onto computer but do have a book that traces the family back to Maldegem. Actually had lunch in Maldegem about 10 years ago. The book is at home and I am at work right now.

Terri (DePauw) May

My great grandfather's name was Leonard John DePauw (1859-1963), born in Holland. He married Elizabeth DeKoster (1889-1984), from Watervliet Belgium, what used to be known as Flanders.

His father was Jacobus DePauw (1829-1902), married to Joanna Schram (1829–1899), in Holland.

Jacobus' father was Johannes Petrus DePauw married to Josephen Van De Louef, in Holland.

Leonard was married 3 times, Elizabeth was his last wife. I would dearly love to learn the names of his other wives.

Leonard came to the US in the 1880s, and made many trips back and forth bringing relatives back from Europe with him every time. As far as I know, his last visit was in 1935 to bring his mother-in-law to the US.

He lived in Missouri first, then Illinois and lastly Michigan.

The Emma Van De Rostyne that was mentioned in a message, I was wondering if she could be the daughter of Peter Van De Rostyne that was born in 1885 in Atkinson, ill and the sister of my husbands father Joseph who later moved to South Dakota. He said that the Lievens name is familiar to him

Hi

I am currently trying to find information on my husbands side of the family. His great grandfather was Jean Baptiste De Pauw born 25 August 1864 in Malines, died 8 April 1931 in the same town. If anyone has any further information on him such as parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles or even a goldfish ;) I would be extremely grateful. Also does anyone know where I can access Belgian records?

Thanks in advance

Sam

If the father of your grandfather is also a Charles (Charly)then there is a chance that yr family came from Kaprijke near the dutch border, East Flanders, Belgium. His parents were Karel De Pauw (dates unknown) and Amélie De Veirman born and died in Kaprijke (old spelling Caprycke)born on 17 October 1818, dead on 22 January 1901. Charles had a lot of brothers and sisters (names unknown) of which Sophie my grand grand mother. Charles sent pictures of his children to Sophie but without names on the back. There where 4 boys and 1 girl.

Hi Terri

I am glad you got the email. I was worried that your posting was so old you may not get it. I found the site and your post by accident and decided to give it a try.

My dad was stationed in Germany 1976 - 1979, I left in 1978 to attend college. We lived in Zweibruecken, if you know where Ramstein or Landstuhl is, we were 30 kilometers from there. Before we went to Germany we lived outside Clinton, MD. I attended Gwynn Park Junior High (7-9) and 10th grade at Gwynn Park Senior High in Brandywine. Where in Maryland do you live? I may be on the east coast this summer. I live in Los Angeles, CA. I have been here for 25 years.

My sister is named after my aunt who passed away in 1945, my mom survived polio which is what my aunt died from. I believe the spelling of my aunts name is Dolores. Yes, Wilbur was killed, I did not recall the year just that my mom was young, he died in a car vs. train crash. He was nicknamed Skeeter, my uncle Lavern who was born in 1953 is called Skeeter. You have a girl dying at 3 days, I thought it was a boy, but these are things we don't always talk about.

It would be hard for me to name all my cousins, there are so many and as military brats we seldom saw them. My mom married Cephas William Bryan in 1959, he was from New Bedford, Ill. They had 5 kids, me born in 1960, Shawn 1961, Timothy 1962 and the twins Daniel and Dolores 1963. Shawn and I were born in Maine, Tim in Oklahoma and the twins in Princeton, Ill. the same hospital my parents were born in.

My father has scanned a lot of old photos into the computer, I know he is trying to identify the people in the pictures. I am not sure the status. Most are from my mom's family or our family.

I look forward to hearing from you. You can also reach me at apesteacher@yahoo.com.

Kevin Bryan

Kevin,
Hello, Haven't had a posting in awhile and the email that it comes in on is old and I don't check often. Anyway, it appears that Celia Marie DePauw was first cousin to my Grandfather. I show she was born 9/4/1904 and was the first child of Louis Main Joseph DePauw and Marie Marrietta Wespler. Celia appears to be one of 18 children but at least 5 died shortly after birth. I do have some info on your grandparents children although it appears it was a girl (Arlene) that died at 3 days and Delores passed in October 1945. It was Wilbur that died at age 22 (1947). I also had an Uncle named Wilbur - He was my father's twin brother - My father was Spencer.

In fact my Uncle Wilbur is the one that did much of the research on the family tree and compiled a book back in the 60's which I have a copy. You are apparently the same generation as my children although about 10 years earlier as your grandmother was born about 12 years before my dad in 1916. I was born in 1949 and I have 2 kids age 39 and 32. My Uncle did not follow the females past the generation that they lost the DePauw name. I have your mother and aunts and uncles but nothing after that.

Where do you live now? When were you in Germany? I lived there for 2 years in 2001 and 2002 in Frankfurt. I live in Maryland now where my father met my mother during WWII when he was stationed at Fort Meade. He moved here when he got out and married my mother. Both my parents have passed now.

If you need more information let me know. At one time I had put all this on my computer but think I lost it in crash but not sure.

Terri May

Dear Terri
I am responding to an old message. Loius DeSkeere was born in Belgium, while my family lived in Germany we visited his sister my great aunt in a convent in Belgium, I am sorry I don't remember her name. Another older brother came to America first, around 1904, I have his name and the ship information some where, he spelled the name differently. I was at Ellis Island and found this information. My Grandfather passed away in March 1979 my first year in college. He was married to Celia Marie Depauw and she passed away in 1960 shortly after I was born. They did have 8 children, one male died shortly after birth, Dolores passed away I think in 1944 or 45 from polio, another brother died at 22 in a train accident, I don't know the year. The remaining 5 include two boys (Dale and Lavern) and three girls - Marietta, Vivian and my mother Rachel. I know my father was looking to work on my mom's family tree but am not sure how far he got on it.
Kevin Bryan

Kathy,
Well you are my generation as my grandfather Johannes(John) was the second one born in US. My uncle did the family tree book that I think you are referring to back in the 60's when he was stationed in France for several years. I transferred a lot of data into Family Tree software package several years ago but not sure it ever transferred to new computer. I have been in contact with several cousins over the years that I have found thru this page. I had the opportunity back in 2002 to visit Maldegem Belgium where I believe our great great grandmother was from. Only had time to do lunch but was nice to visit. Would love to update some history. My uncle never followed the woman once they married and lost the name which is a shame. I was only in Geneseo 3 or 4 times and the last time was in 1979. My father Spencer moved to Maryland when he married my mother. The rest of my 1st cousins are all over. California, Texas, Arizona, Illinois and Germany. Will be glad to converse more but back to work for now.

Terri (DePauw) May

My grandfather Adolph was the first child of that family born in US. I used to love to sit and look at the huge and great family tree that I believe Leopold did. Today at work I got a call from Mrs Maurice Depauw from Geneseo and It brought back memories of visiting Geneseo and had to look found this site. Great to read all of you posts. If you was to update any part of that tree let me know.

Interesting message. Marilyn is a decendent of the Lievens family from the Eeklo town of Belgium. Her grandfather Ed. B Lievens and his wife, Emma Van de Rostyne (Lembeke) moved to and settled in North Dakota.
In addition to this potential connection, we visited Lembeke in May and stayed in a cottage owned by the dePauw's just Eeklo.

Interested in sharing info? Alex Haverbeke and his wife Magda (both from Eeklo and now from Brussells) are visiting Atkinson, IL at this very moment.

Don

My family and I live in Germany, and are relocating to the Bitburg area next month; we work for the US goverment and have lived here for many years. We came across a DePauw Hotel (family owned) in Brugge, Belgium a couple of years ago, and although they had no vacant rooms, we were checked in to our hotel in Maldegem (my great-grandfather's home town) by a woman whose mother was a DePauw. In some parts of the world, the name is not so hard to find.
-David DePauw

Edward Lievens was my grandfather's first cousin. His father Jacob Lievens was brother to my great grandmother Maria (Mary) Antonio Lievens who married Desire DePauw. There are a lot of Lievens and relatives still living in the Atkinson area. I know of another group that settled in west central Iowa but have lost track of them. I did not know of any relatives in North Dakota. Any information would be appreciated as most of my information ends with the second cousins..

Charles Depauw buried at Salem, there he will rest in the Depauw lot at Crown Hill cemetery
A special dispatch from Salem under date of the 23d says: Mr. W. D. Keyes, of New Albany, arrived in this city last night with the remains of Charles DePauw, who died at Columbus, Ind., Oct. 1, 1823. Mr. Keyes is a grandnephew of the deceased, and had the remains exhumed at Columbus yesterday, and to-day they were laid to rest in the DePauw family lot in Crown Hill Cemetery, by the side of the brothers of deceased. Charles DePauw was the youngest of five brothers. Peter, James, John and Napoleon Bonaparte. From religious persecution, they being Huguenots, the family was driven from France, and came to America, and in time Charles settled at Columbus, married there in 1822 and died one year after. He was buried in the private burying ground near Columbus. Napoleon Bonaparte DePauw, before his death, put up tombstones over all the graves of his brothers. They were all similarly built, with a large marble slab covering. This one of Charles DePauw was originally about eighteen inches high, but when discovered about a week ago it was twelve inches below the surface. The bones were found in a perfect state of preservation. Charles DePauw was an uncle of the late Washington C. DePauw, and there are many relatives of deceased in this part of Indiana.

In trying to research a "lost" cemetery in Bartholomew County, Indiana, I have found some rather interesting newspaper articles regarding the discovery of the grave of Charles DePauw here in 1895. I will post each separately FYI. I would like to hear from you if you are related to this family as I am trying to list those who were possiblly buried in this cemetery.

From what I can piece together, Charles DePauw was the son of Charles Lievin & Rachel (Young) DePauw, was born about 1800, married Cynthia Troutman 4/16/1823 and died 10/11/1825 in Bartholomew County.

Jeanne,
Hi, I am a former DePauw. I would not be surprised that Pauw has the same origin. My ancestors came from Belgium however and there are still quite a few DePauw's in Belgium. I live in the United States however and I know when imigrants entered the country that their names were either mispelled or shortened from the original version of their homeland. I think that could be that many of the imigrants were illiterate and probably didn't know how to spell their name unfortunately and it was spelled phonetically or englishnized (my word). That really doesn't help answer your question. Have you explored Pauw in Holland?

Will Pauw be family of De Pauw?

Hi there!
I have a keen interest in my family history. Whenever I submit my surname "Pauw", the search kicks out anything from De Pauw to De Paauw...
Do you think that our surnames might have the same origin and that somewhere along the line (with immigrations; migrations, new cultures and languages) things have changed the way we spell our surnames???
My name is Jeanne Pauw. I live in South Africa and I am the beginning of the 5th generation Pauw's in my line. I can take back the family tree to the first Pauw who landed in South Africa many moons ago. He came from Holland and he was a missionary.

I would appreciate it if anyone can shed light on the differences in the spelling our surnames.

Thank you very much.

Kind regards
Jeanne Pauw

My great-grandmother was Melanie Van de Keere, who was married to Johannes Leopold DePauw. They both immigrated to the U.S. in 1880...I'd have to check my dad's geneology book to be sure....they were his grandparents, and they had a farm outside of Atkinson, Illinois. One of their sons, John DePauw, who moved to Geneseo, Illinois, was my grandfather, and my father's father. At any rate, my father has compiled a rather large book on the DePauw family as a result of years of research in the states, in and around Maldghem, Belgium (where Johannes and Melanie were living before coming to the states) and at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. I have at least one copy of the book, but would have to spend some time looking for it...respond if you're interested. -David L. DePauw
Doug,
I think I e-mailed you before regarding DePauw's and DeSkeere's. My uncle did the Depauw family history in the 60's while based in Europe. My informations shows a Louis DeSkeere born in Watervliet, Belgium married Celia Marie DePauw in Illinois. I show them having 8 children but 2 died before the age of 5 and one died at age 22(boy). However the surving 5 were 1 boy and 4 girls born between 1923 and 1953.

None are named Clarisa though and the only close name I have is Clarise Florance DePauw born in 1892 and married someone named Joseffy. I am sure there is a connection there somewhere but not sure where.

Let me know if you have any other info or want any additional info.

Terri May

In reply to your message to Beth, I received it since I started the string. Melanie Van de Keere would have been my great grandmother and my grandfather was John Leopold DePauw. My uncle did the family history on the Depauw side but did not carry out the females of the family as to their relations. Not sure if Beth has that information as we have communicated occasionally with information.

I will add Melanie's parents names to my data though and appreciate the data. My uncle did this in the 60's when he was stationed in Europe and before computer data bases which makes it a little easier to carry on the other families. Did you know that Melanie was born in St. Laureins, Belgium? Or at least that is what we show in the family history. My great grandfather was born in Maldegem Belgium and they married in Belgium and sailed to the US in September 1880 with 6 children although one died at sea in Oct 1880.

I will also check some info that Beth sent me and let you know if there is any additional information.

Terri May

Hi Beth, I am researching the VandeKeere's and I have come across Melaine Vandekeere who is the mother of your Louis DePauw. I have found her parents as Anthony and Amelia DeSutter VandeKeere. I was wondering if you know anything about her siblings. My great-great grandmother was Leonie VandeKeere who was a child of Anthony and Amelia Vandekeere, and I unfortunately do not have enough information to connect the two familes for sure. Leonie was born in 1861 and died in 1907. She married Johannes Serie in 1880 in Henry County, Illinois.

My grandfather was Charles DePauw. He was born in Belgium and lived in Kewanee,Illinois. He had a brother Camelis (Mel) who lived in Kewanee. He had another brother Peter who moved to Portland, Oregon. There was only one sister Augusta who married John Landuyt and lived in Monmouth IL.

There also was another DePauw family. Clement and Albert lived in Kewanee, but were not closely related.

If you have any more questions please let me know

Francis

I probably have it wrong,..I'll check ehat I have. I know my mother said her mother (Clarissa DePauw DeSkeere) said something about three brothers, and I must of assumed she meant her mothers.I was told my grandmother and her husband Peter DeSkeere came over from Watervliet,Belgium. Do you know of anyone doing either one of those lines?

Beth,
We may be cousins. My Grandfather Carolus was born in St Jan in Eremo in 1888 just a few miles from St Laureins. His father Disere was also born in St Jan in Eremo in 1844. His wife-my great grandmother Mary? Antonio Lievens was born in St Laureins. My Grandfather also had relatives in California, Oregon, Iowa and New Jersey. There are a lot of DePauws and Lievens that emigrated to the Atkinson IL area beginning in the 1870s from the East Flanders region of Belgium. Unfortunately the church in St Jan in Eremo burned and the records were lost. I would be interested in comparing notes as all I have are a few postcards and pictures.
Francis
