Hello Jacob,

Thansk for your note and information. My grandfather's actual surname was Poe but he and some of the family certainly used 'De Poe' at different times. My grand-father grew up in northern California (Mount Shasta and later near Sacramento) and was familair with Indian stories so perhaps adopted this usage. We may never know, but their is a story that his step-mother was either an America Indian or Mexican - bit sadly there are no records i have been able to track. best wishes from Oz - Leon

Hello, my name is Jacob DePoe, my last name is somewhat of a mystery and only has two possibilities as to its origin. 1.) My GGG grandfather was the chief of the tribe here in Oregon and guarded the Calvary Military Depot. It is said that the soldiers couldnt pronounce his indian name and thus renamed him Depot Charley. Charley being the standard name given to "new americans". 2.) Another possibility is that a french trapper came down into the Oregon territory where my ancestors descend from and taught them about Christianity converting them and in turn the leaders of the tribe took the name DePoe as a sign of honor to the frenchman. 3.) The frenchman married into the tribe sending his name down the lineage.

Alexander De Poe

recently discovered that my grand-father, Allan Marion Poe (b 1885 in CA), married before meeting my grandmother. He used the surname 'De Poe' and married in Sydney Australia to Louisa Connolley in 1906. The followign year they had a son who was named Alexadner Alonzo Joseoh De Poe. The son and his mother then seem to have disappeared!

I suspect they left australia and never returned, maybe to England or possibly the USA. My grandfatehr returned single to Australia in 1912 and married my grand-mother the following year. 'De Poe' is an unusual usage, but I can't find any refereneces. Does anyone have any clues?

Thanks

Leon Lyell
PO Box 206
Bundoora Vic 3083
Australia
l.lyell@latrobe.edu.au
