In my great-aunt's book I have a John DePriest married to Elizabeth Rice. (Son of William DePriest b.25 sep 1689 d. abt 1738 Henrico Co. and wife Judith.) Paid Poll Tax, 1782-1787, Henrico County, VA.
Thought the date & county was interesting. The book can be found- The Bain Family by Ethel M. Bain, Library of Congress, No. 81-101583, page 266.
There are a few pages on the DePriest family that I am related to.
I am related to Randolph DePriest II, husband of Amy Mimms.
(case #R 2987 Pension application 24 Dec 1851)
My Great Aunt Ethel M. Bain wrote three books on our Bain family history. They lead to the DePriest family on one side by way of Sarah Elizabeth DePriest Dykes (Bain), daughter of Green Alexander DePriest and Louisa Jane Ward.
These books are in the Library of Congress, No. 81-101583, No. 596-164, and one more newer one I don't have at hand presently. There might be info you are looking for, but there are only a few bl & wh pics, maps. I don't think DePriest pics though.
I would love to see any pics of Randolph DePriest II or anyone in that lineage. Or info on where to find more about our Revolutionary War patriots.
Thanks
Edward DePriest Arkansas 1882

I’m looking for information about the family of Edward DePriest. It appears he was born in Arkansas around 1882. The 1920 census (in which he is living in Oklahoma) states his father was born in Missouri and his mother in Tennessee. His mother is also listed as living with him (widowed) and her name is Nancy (although I dispute her age - it’s listed as 93 which would mean she would have been in her 50’s when he was born).

Thats really cool thank you for that info! It was some debate in this family where we were actually from. Either from France or Germany. But this is all the info I need to know, now I think I will go learn to speak some french! I can use that to visit Paris, but thank you anyways for sharing that info.

Also a very interesting thing about our surname because I've researched as best as I could but I could never find anything on it, because its not really a common name. By the way, do you ever have any trouble with people pronouncing and spelling Dupriest because oh, let me tell you, when me and my brother were younger, NOBODY could spell Dupriest or say it for that matter. It made me really angry because it really itsn't that hard of a name compared to some, just DU and PRIEST.

But nonetheless we would tell them and they would respond, "Dupree?" And we say nope, its Dupriest, and they would spell it wrong even after that.

Research has found that even back in the 19th century they were spelling it wrong. On Robert and his wife's marriage certificate, his last name is spelled Duprece but later corrected. And I've seen it spelled DuFriest, Du Praist even. So this is just a walk in the park for me to know more about my surname. Thank you again and sorry I talk so much!

Wow thats a lot. Thank you for the information. Thats cool that Martin left the family farm in Georgia to my 4th great-grandpa. But I don't know who Green left it too or sold it after that. He moved to Stewart County, Georgia where he had quite a few kids. His son Robert, my 3rd great-grandfather lived in Schley County, Georgia and died there in 1880.

Green and his second wife eventually died in Taylor County, Georgia. My dad's family is still in Georgia and we've owned our family farm there since the early 20th century.

I tried looking for any Census record and other stuff to match James Dupriest to Martin on this one other website I know but I couldn't find anything for you. Though you've probably done more research then me. Isn't it frustrating when you can't find any documentation?

I was looking for some 1890 mortality Census's to find what Robert Dupriest, my 3rd great-grandfather died from because he died rather young, even for those days, and I wanted to see if he had an illness. But I recently found out that they were burned in a fire in the Commerce Building back in 1921 and the remaining ones that didn't get burned were ordered destroyed. And I'm also looking for letters and pictures of Green Dupriest and Robert Dupriest, which is very hard.

I would love to see those letters your parents recieved. One of them may have been from my grandfather, who died before I was born sadly, or my great-grandfather, also dead before I was born.

A response from Donald John DuPriest to Mom’s 1979 Dupriest Survey:
“… The Aleace-Lorrainne area of France. There is allegedly an arch in Northern France with the name of DuPriest on it. A colleague of mine in 1953 had some knowledge of the name and claimed that a King of France gave land in Alabama to the DuPriest’s for some act in the early 1700’s …”

Another story Mom relates from her 1979 survey is about the cemetery in downtown Paris with the name “DePriest” in the entrance arch, the burial place of our Robert’s extended family. What’s true? Maybe you can figure it out next time you visit Paris.
Larry
Mom and Dad, still living, have a large box full of hand-written personal letters responding to her 1979 Dupriest genealogy inquiry (using a LDS nationwide list of Dupriest addresses). Most of the letters received back were from older widdowed men and women. Some were from Georgia and may be known names in your family.

It looks like Martin Dupriest Sr. had plenty of land in Morgan Co, GA to raise his first 15 children. However; by 1845/46, the older boys were getting married and having their own families. The Georgia farm would no longer support the extended family.

Apparently Martin Sr. (age 57 in 1845) left the family farm in Georgia to the oldest son Green and moved westward with his remaining married sons (not the younger ones) to the land of promise in Coosa Co, Alabama where he bought considerable farm land and had 7 more children. Martin died in 1860 at age 72 on his farm in Coosa Co, AL

Once again, his family outgrew this farm. He intended to leave this farm to the next-oldest son, Joseph Dupriest. However; after Martin’s death, his last will was contested by his 12th child Julia, married to Layton Yancy (still living in GA). Joseph did end up getting most of Martin’s farm.

Joseph’s family also outgrew this inheritance, but at least Joseph left a good will when he died. Families once again went separate ways, mostly heading west into Arkansas and Texas. As they departerd, we inherit the "missing pot of burriet gold" story.

Hey … it’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Larry
This is another reply. I sent you one earlier but I wanted to know if you knew anything about where or why we came here. I have on my tree, and I know you've mentioned him, a Robert Dupriest who came from Paris, France, but I don't know if this is right or not, it would be interesting to know for sure considering Dupriest is a french-sounding name.

BTW this is how I'm descended:

1. Robert Dupriest (1660-1708)
2. William Dupriest (1689-1738)
3. William Dupriest (1725-1768)
4. James Dupriest (1757-1841)
5. Martin Dupriest (1788-1860)
6. Green Dupriest (1814-1880 or 89)
7. Robert Dupriest (1839-1880)
That so cool! Thank you so much. I would LOVE to find absolute proof that Martin is the son of James and Elizabeth. As I'm only fifeteen I don't have the resources right now to do any research more than Ancestry.com.

I'm trying to plan my own little trip maybe this Summer to Georgia. Thats where Robert Dupriest, the son of Green, lived with his family, and he is my 3rd great-grandfather, but I'm trying to find more on him, like letters or something. Maybe I could take a trip to Alabama if one of our kin owns Martin's old place that would be fantastic too see, even if it is flooded.

I would love to find out if you find more on him and I'll be waiting for that absolute proof that he is the son of James.

Hey cuz. Let’s get Martin surrounded and find PROOF he is the son of James Depriest and Elizabeth Martin. This is my only missing link in proving lineage to our original Robert Depriest. It is the only proof needed for our clan to join the Huguenot Society.
.
Meanwhile, our trip was one to remember. We met one of two cousins in Marble Valley, Coosa Co, AL who still owns Martin’s home place, much of it flooded by the more recent Lay Lake on Coosa River. The county clerk had tons of our family “official” documents, we found the tombstones, and the newspaper office even had a couple of great books. Everyone in the area was over-friendly. We felt right at home and look forward to doing the trip again.
Becky, my research has focused on finding proof that 1788 Martin was the son of 1757 James [the son of 1730 William(2) Depriest]. I have copied part of a 1932 DAR book that includes supplementary records showing James was in the Revolutionary War. Other than recording the families of his brothers and sisters, I have not looked much deeper.
.
Have you corresponded with Travis Tallmadge Depriest? He is a past president of the Huguenot Society and was VERY supportive a few years back when I was interested in joining the Society, something I still work on occasionally.
.
I’ll keep my eyes open.
DePriest of Amherst County Virginia

I am looking for information on the DePriest's of Amherst County Virginia. Specifically Langdon DePriest and his wife Ann Clark. Does anyone have a copy of Langdon and Ann's marriage license (they were married around 1762-1764), or know where I can get a copy?
Also, does anyone know who Langdon's parents were? Were they John DePriest and Elizabeth Rice?

Thanks,
Kasey

Re: Who was their Father????

The dates all match up with the information I have for John (Preston) DePriest, Thomas (Allen) DePriest, and Joseph (Charles) DePriest. Thomas Allen DePriest died from a gunshot because he was murdered in West Virginia.

I do not think that John had different parents...

I have a picture of Joseph Charles DePriest, the son of Randolf and Hannah Airey DePriest, and he is an indian. There is most definately indian blood in this line. I believe that Joseph is buried in Old Indian Cemetery in West Virginia. No one I know of has found his grave as of yet.

If this is your line, I would love to talk to you. Please email me at depriekm@email.uc.edu

Kasey

Re: Martin 1788-1860 ... Genealogy Trip

Our cousin Travis Talmadge Dupriest, past president of the Huguenot Society, is descended from James’ brother William III Depriest. He encouraged me to join the Huguenot Society so I began collecting official documents down the line ... papers like Birth, Marriage, Death, Census, Tax, Land, Court records … anything to prove the lineage.
.
All of this has been found except for confirmation 1788(?) Martin’s father was 1757(?) James Depriest, married to Elizabeth Martin(?). Can you help?
.
Larry Dupriest
dgdupriest@nctv.com
.
.
Aside: I did find a reference in an old DAR book (*) where James Depriest is listed as a Private serving for 84 months in the NC Continental Line and received a bounty of 640 acres in NC. His future father-in-law, James Farr, is also listed in the same book. Individuals have joined SAR/DAR through his brothers William III and Randolph and even James Farr, but apparently no one has ever proved a line through James Depriest.
.
(*) Source: Roster Of Soldiers From North Carolina In The American Revolution with an appendix containing a collection of miscellaneous records; published by the North Carolina Daughters Of The American Revolution; dated 1932. A copy can be found in the Tyrrell Historical Library of Beaumont, Texas.
.
In another possibly related reference, a descendant of Capt. Thomas Crews sent me a copy of his official GA company roster listing James Deprieast.
