Re: Deptula Family Name

DEPTUŁA

In Polish this name is spelled with a slash through the L. Thus the name is Deptuła and is pronounced roughly "depp-TOO-wah."

As of 1990, according to the best data available (the Slownik nazwisk wspolczesnie w Polsce uzywanych, "Directory of Surnames in Current Use in Poland," which covers about 94% of the population of Poland), there were 3,783 Polish citizens by this name. They lived all over Poland, but the largest numbers lived in the following provinces: Olsztyn 777, Ostrołęka 1,397, Warsaw 257. The data indicates the name is most common in northeastern Poland.

Polish name expert Prof. Kazimierz Rymut mentions this name in his book Nazwiska Polaków [The Surnames of Poles]. He says names beginning Dept- come from the verb deptać (accent over the C), which means "to tread on," or the dialect noun depta, "dawdler." As a rule names in the form X-uła mean "one always doing X, one always demonstrating the trait X." So Deptuła probably began as a kind of nickname for one always treading on something, or one always dawdling around. I would think the second interpretation is more likely to be applicable to a surname. So I think most likely this name means you had an ancestor who was perceived by others as a dawdler -- or else the name was meant ironically, the way guys named "Tiny" are usually huge, so a might also have been one who never dawdled. These names developed centuries ago, and all this time later all we can do is give the basic meaning, then make reasonable suggestions on what the name might have meant originally in a given context.

My great grand father's name was Valentine Deptula. He had 5 sons: Stanley, Frank (born 1903 in Delaware), William (my grandfather- born in 1907 in Delaware), Jesse, and Joseph. He also had 1 daughter: Mary. Valentine was born in 1874 in Poland. He married Maryanna Deptula (unknown maiden name)in 1898 and immigrated to the United States (Delaware) in approximately 1902.
Please feel free to contact me if we are referring to the same family.
Best Wishes,
L.
Hello
My name is Pawel Deptula, I live in Warsaw. Deptula family appeared in North/Eastern Poland (Ostrołęka, Szczytno, Pułtusk).
My uncle (he died few years ago) tried to make a family tree. I saw it once, now I do not know what happend with this book. If he was not mistaken, family was created by soldier who escaped from Napolion's army retreating from Moscow. But I am not sure. Anyway in Poland Deptula surname seems to be not popular.

Greetings to all Deptulas

Pawel Deptuła

Hi again, I was wondering if you know of anyone in your family that may have inherited Carl's possessions. I am interested in anything that would have to do with Charles Wetherhold who was in the Civil War and died in Andersonville Prison. I'm sure people in my family would pay for things like this, and would love to see or make copies of any pictures. Charles Wetherhold would have been Carl's great-grandfather (I think- I don't have my genealogy info on this computer). We really don't have anything from this side of the family because our branch moved alot, and never kept anything (much unlike my family now). My sons are very interested in the Civil War and any nfo and/or pics would be greatly appreciated! Thanks - Lorie

Hi again - I would love any info that you have - I am trying to find out if there are any living relatives, other than the ones that I am related to. We are related through Charles Wetherhold that was married to Eliza Wolfe. Charles died in he Civil War at Andersonville Prison, and Henry, who was Carl's grandfather, was Charles' son. His other son Charles, was my relative. It's a long distance, but I am hoping to find someone somewhere that might have some pictures. My Grandmother's name was Emily Wetherhold Wagner. Thanks so much!!! - Lorie

My name is Emily Deptula. I saw something posted about Stephanie, she is my great-aunt I believe. My grandfather was Edward Deptula. He died in the 70's and I was born in the 80's. As a result I know very little about any of our family history. I would LOVE to learn more!!!! I don't even know my great grandparents names or when they came to this country.

My husband's grandfather, Adolph Deptula emigrated from Poland, although specifically where, we do not know. He lived in the Trenton, NJ area until his death in 1971. He was married to Mary Grableweska, also from Poland. I don't know if there is any connection, but we have been researching our roots on that side of the family and keep hitting dead ends.
