I don't know these names, nor am I familiar with Wayne Co, In. My family went to Indiana in early settler days, spreading from southeastern Indiana (Deputy, IN) outward. I believe there are some Kentucky, and throughout Indiana.

I'm from DE and looking for James W. Deputy's family. He was b. abt. 1886, had a brother Alonzo b. abt. 1895. He was married twice. His second wife was Anne(Annie) B. Coverdale/Coverdill, also of DE. They had 2 daugthers, Mildred b. 1905, and Beatrice b. abt Mar 1910. Anne's parents were George W. and Susan Ann "Kirby Covington" Coverdale of DE.
There were several of the Coverdale and related families that moved to Wayne Co., IN and the surrounding area. Purnal Coverdale was the only one I recall without digging through my research. I would be interested and greatful for any info that might be connected to my great aunt and uncle. Thanks for your time in advance.

According to a State of Indiana History textbook which my grandfather owned, and now my dad has, Deputy, Indiana was founded by someone by the last name of Deputy years ago -- I don't know when. He canoed down the Ohio River with an Indian Guide and settled in southeastern Indiana, where Deputy, Indiana still exists. My grandmother on the Deputy side had someone do some research, which indicated that the name came from the original DePuy. This same research indicated that the original DePuys were French Huginots (sp? Some of the first Protestants), who fled French religious persecution. Some went to Holland, but those from whom the Deputys are descended fled to Wales. A former coworker of mine, who hailed from Wales, recognized my name as Welsh immediately upon being introduced. Thats about the limit of what I know. My grandfather insisted we were related to four American Presidents: the Adamses and the Harrisons; however, a cousin who has researched our genealogy says she hasn't found any connection.

By the way, be careful what you say on this or any other geneology/ancestry website. According to news articles I saw a few months ago, identity theives are using info from these websites.

Dustin do you have you ancestors names and birth dates that you could put on this board, possibly someone will have a connection. You live in Tennessee did you parents and grandparents come from Tennessee? The Deputy family I have done a little research on came from Deleware. Quite a few of them who were Indiana pioneers married cousins. Here is a link to the page on the Jennings County web site that has some Deputy information. http://ingenweb.org/injennings/mtzion.html

I can't find the orgin or the meaning ro any relatives out side of america. I'm just trying to find anything out. I have relatives that spell there name with an "i", Debity, as well. We have the same great-great grandparents tough. My ancestors found a way to mess it up I guess( I believe there are more spellings too). But Deputy, Debty, and Debity, sound a lot alike.

I am the INGenWeb Coordinator for Jennings County, Indiana which is a neighboring County to Jefferson County where Deputy, Indiana is located. Jennings County also had lots of Deputy's. I just today came into possession of two pictures of a Deputy family reunion held in Indiana August 27th of 1922. It is quite long and it is a really large group of people. A lovely lady who is a descendant of these Deputy's and just turned 93 years young allowed me to copy the picture when I was visiting with her. She lives on a family farm in Marion Township that has been in the family since the 1800's and there is still a home standing and in excellent shape lived in by a Fred Deputy in 1878 on the property. I am going to be doing a section on the family and the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery where a number of these Deputy's are buried and plan to use the pictures in it but if anyone would like copies before I get the page done I would be happy to send them along. She also gave me a copy of her family tree.

The girl looks a lot like my grandmother, but I believe she lived just over the border, in Illinois. Their family did have one of the first cars. This is probably either a relative in Indianapolis, or someone from the town named for our ancester -- someone in Deputy, Indiana, which is a small town in southeastern Indiana.

Deputy, Indiana

My dad has an old book on Indiana State history that was handed down from his parents. The book states that a Deputy ancestor paddled a canoe down the Ohio River with an Indian guide, settling in southeastern Indiana. There is still a town there named for him -- and a cemetary filled with Deputys. My grandmother had something from an ancestry-tracing company that stated our family name comes from the French Houginaghts (I'm sure I've misspelled that!), who were some of the first European Protestants. The family fled persecution for their religious beliefs, some going to Holland, and our part of the family going to Wales. From there, they came to this continent. In the 1980 census, there were only 1,000 households by our surname in the continental US.

Hello... I just spotted your posting and the old photo. I have no way of telling if these are my direct ancestors, but my Deputy family was in Indianapolis at and before the turn of the last century. Ivan Donald Deputy, Sr. was the grandfather of my dad, Ivan Donald Deputy, III. Sr. was born in 1872 in Marion Co., and was a post master in Indianapolis. My father is 82 now, and was born in Santa Monica, California. As I said, I've no idea who these Deputys might be in the picture, but are surely related to us. From what I understand, all the Deputys are related!
Fun to see the picture ~~ thanks so much for saving it!
Suzi (Deputy) Larson

Surname DEPUTY in early WOOD CO.(now.W.) Va. records

Still interested in the surname DEPUTY in early 1800s,Wood Co.,(now W.) Va. Sarah aka Sally DEPUTY b.1796 DE. married Arehart GLAZE b.1789 MD.,Jan.6,1814 Wood Co.Va. by Rev.Reece Woolf. This Sarah nee DEPUTY GLAZE died 1881 Hocking Co.,Oh. I have no doubt, this Sarah was the daughter of Henry DEPUTY b.De.of Wood Co.,Va. to Indiana. For whatever reasons, this DEPUTY/GLAZE marriage record, tax ,deed & census records of Wood Co.,Va.were completely left out of the early Perkins research. I have no doubt, this Sarah DEPUTY b.1796 De. was the sister to Andrew DEPUTY,who was also married in Wood Co.,Va. by Rev.Reece Woolf. As for the other Sarah DEPUTY who married Wm.Turner, how were her parents proven? Both the surnames GLAZE & DEPUTY are found in early Wood Co.,Va. records. Brothers Arehart,John,George,& Henry GLAZE removed to Ohio. Arehart Glaze to Hocking Co.,Oh. John Glaze Jr.to Highland Co.,Oh. George Glaze to Pike/Scioto Co.,Oh. Henry Glaze to Licking Co.,Oh. I have no doubt,Sarah DEPUTY b.1796 De. - d.1881 Oh. was a grand daughter to Esther DEPUTY,will probated Wood Co.,Va. Can anyone disprove this?

Wood Co.,Va. DEPUTY Help?

Has anyone tried to research the Deputy families of early Wood Co.,Va.? Yes,I already have several copies of Belvah Perkins work. Other than the Wills of Sylvester of De.& Esther of Wood Co.,Va.,I find it lacking in references from records in Wood Co.,Va. It's doubtless Solomon Deputy only lived in Wood Co.,Va. for a few years, removed to Indiana by 1810,so he is of little interest. Of interest are Henry,Zachariah,John, and Andrew, found in Wood Co.,Va. census records 1820 & 1830. I have no records of Joshua & Willliam in Wood Co.,Va. It seems according to Belvah Perkins,William Deputy of Indiana had children born before & after 1840 in Wood Co.,Va. I cannot find any Deputys in the 1840 Wood Co.,Va. census. I have found some Deputy descendants to feel it's a "sin" to question this old research,as if it's "Holy". I'm sure Belvah Perkins and others would want this research carried on. I still have a Sarah Deputy b.1796 De.,married Arehart Glaze ,Jan.6,1814 Wood Co.,Va. by Rev.Reece Woolf. I have Arehart Glaze in deed records,1811 to 1832 Wood Co.,Va. I have Arehart Glaze & brother, George Glaze w/families in 1820 Wood Co.,Va.census ,also indexed are Henry ,John ,Zachariah Deputy. Arehart Glaze w/Sarah of Wood Co.,Va.,1831 ,Wood Co.,Va.deed record. Arehart Glaze w/Sarah of Hocking Co.,Oh.in 1832 Wood Co.,deed record. Brother Henry Glaze in 1814 Wood Co.,Va.,deed record to Henry DEPUTY. No you won't find Glaze/Deputy in this old research that you can find copied over and over, posted on the web, without references to actual Wood Co.,Va. records. It's easy to copy someone else's research,it's a little harder to verify it.

I have heard of this annual reunion for years, but I have never attended. Besides being always held the 1st Sunday in June, I don't know much else. I know they have had it in Crothersville, IN in the past. Does anyone know about this annual family reunion? I'm considering attending it this year.

Found DEPUTY

Per "Pioneers of Wood Co.(Va.) by John House" as follows,"doubtless a sister of Andrew and John DEPUTY". So my female DEPUTY born 1796 Delaware was "doubtless" a daughter of Henry DEPUTY,totally IGNORED by ALL the DEPUTY "research" I've seen. It's amazing to me that this daughter was missed,as her marriage record is indexed with Andrew DEPUTY/Elizabeth Cain and Sarah DEPUTY/Wm Turner. I have this DEPUTY with her husband in the 1820 Wood Co.,Va. census w/2 sons/3 dau.,under 10 yrs. Deed records show her and husband sold land (L.Kanawha River) 1831 & 1832. In 1832,the records show where they were living in Ohio. I have verifed 8 children for this family, may have been 10. This female DEPUTY died 1881,her husband 1880,both in Oh. Most of the children were born in Va.,some in Ohio. Ohio census records verify she was b.1796 De. Maiden name on a son's 1911 Ohio death certificate. We descend from another son,b.1826 Va.,died 1920 Oh. I guess if her and her husband would have moved to Indiana, she would have been documented. I have to question how accurate is all this DEPUTY research?

This message is to Judy. I've seen your DEPUTY family tree. Interested on how you verified the DEPUTY family in Wood Co.,Va.? Very interested in how Sally DEPUTY/Arehart GLAZE,Jan.6,1814,married by Rev.Reece WOOLF in Wood Co.,Va. was completely ignored by your research? Sally DEPUTY was born 1796 Delaware, died 1881 Oh. This family can be found in the 1820 Wood Co.,Va. census w/2 sons under 10 yrs.& 3/dau. under 10 yrs. It's impossible to verify the marriage of Andrew DEPUTY/Elizabeth Cain ,May 24,1827,and Sarah DEPUTY/William Turner Dec.9,1824 ,without seeing the marriage record of Sally DEPUTY,all married by Rev.Reece WOOLF in Wood Co.,Va. What gives with your research? Husband Arehart GLAZE bought land in Wood Co.,Va. as early as 1811. Both Arehart GLAZE,wife Sarah aka Sally are in Wood Co.,Va. deed records,1831 of Wood Co.,Va. & 1832 of Hocking Co.,Oh. According to the research of John A.House,"the wife was DOUBTLESS a sister of Andrew and John DEPUTY". If John and Andrew DEPUTY were sons of Henry DEPUTY,wife #1 Sarah Ann Warren #2 Nancy Hayes, then Sally DEPUTY was the daughter of Henry DEPUTY b.Delaware. Arehart GLAZE w/ family can be found in the 1840 Green twp.,Hocking Co.,Oh. census w/ 3 sons & 6 dau. Arehart GLAZE,wife Sarah can be found in the 1850,1860,1870 Hocking Co.,Oh. census. Widow Sarah nee DEPUTY GLAZE can be found in the 1880 Hocking Co.,Oh. census. We descend from this family. I have more to share on this family for any DEPUTY researchers interested in accurate research on this line.

Thank you for all the DEPUTY material. I will certainly review it. I'm certain my female DEPUTY is somehow related to this line. I can tell you that my female DEPUTY ,Sarah aka Sally DEPUTY married a man named GLAZE. It seems this GLAZE bought land near Henry and Solomon DEPUTY in Wood Co.,Va. around 1811. He married "Sally" DEPUTY in 1814.GLAZE can be found on the 1820 Wood Co.,Va.census with a wife? and 4 children under the age of 10.From church records,it seems this family moved to southern Ohio about 1830.This GLAZE family can be found on the 1840 Ohio census with 9 children. By 1880,only 8 children were alive, from will and estate records. Widowed wife,Sarah GLAZE b.1796 De.can be found on the 1880 Ohio census.Sarah GLAZE died 1881. One of her son's 1911 Ohio death certificate states her maiden name was DEPUTY/DEPTY. We are descended from another son, born 1826 Va.died 1920 Ohio.Found both the surnames GLAZE and DEPUTY in Wood Co.,Va. records, from about 1800-1830.

Hi, cousins! I am a descendent of Joshua Emmet Deputy and his first wife, Grace Beauchamp, through their daughter Mary Manlove Deputy. Back about 1902/3 after she graduated from the university, my grandmother Anna Manlove Fowler went to visit her Deputy kin in the Seymour, Indiana, area. She talked to all the old folks and put a lot of genealogical data in a little notebook. According to her records, Joshua and 'Aunt Polly' had children Joseph S. b. Jan 31,1818; William B. b Aug 31, 1819; Sarah Ann b Sept 27, 1821; James W. b. May 6,1824; Martha Jane b. Apr 12, 1826; Elizabeth b. April 23, 1828; and Solomon b.March 12,1831. No John, either.

Grace's three children with Joshua were Esther, Mary, and Henry. No John.

DEPUTY and DUPERTY/DEPERTY: Same Surname?

I have been endeavoring to find some information on a Rose DUPERTY/DEPERTY; she married a James A. Barclay. This is the data that some older family members had put together many years ago in their research. I have not found anyone else with a surname to match the records I have, but when I found the DEPUTY surname, it seemed a good theory that these surnames sound much alike. Any ideas? I have been told it sounds like "De-per-ty(tee)"; so, I can see why there could've been many different spellings of the original surname. Since most of my family lines begin in America in either DE or VA, the Deputy VA/WV records do match up with the dates I have. I'm stuck, however, on my BARCLAY line at this couple:
James A. Barclay...b1801/02...PA? (poss. Perry Co.)
Rose Duperty/Deperty....b1801/02....PA? (pos.Perry Co)
son: Ephraim Barclay....b25 Jan, 1836...PA, Perry
Sp: Elizabeth M. Blair...b1834-PA Co.

I would appreciate anyone's help and/or ideas. Also, I read somewhere that there is an annual family reunion in June....who is the leader? I would like to contact someone that has a full registar of the Deputy line. Thank You!

Early DEPUTY marriage,Sussex Co.,De.

Trying to verify the marriage of Henry DEPUTY b.1774 De.?/Sarah Ann WARREN,179? Sussex Co.,De. So please don't send me that old DEPUTY "research" that has been passed along without ref. to actual marriage, census, deed, and tax records. Have female DEPUTY b.1796 De.,married 1814 Wood Co.,Va.This DEPUTY is found in the 1820 census w/5 children, and in deed records in Wood Co.,Va. until 1832. This DEPUTY had at least 7 children born in Wood Co.,Va.,Henry and Solomon were among many early settlers in Wood Co.,Va. per tax and census records. It seems Solomon moved from Wood Co.,Va.abt.1810 per tax and census records. As this female DEPUTY was 14 in 1810,it's likely she would have moved w/Solomon if she was of this family. A Zachariah shows up in later records, too young to be her father,it's likely he was a son of Henry. Some DEPUTY researchers have a Joshua in Wood Co.,Va.,but this name does not turn up in Wood Co.,Va.1800-1830. This female DEPUTY was "doubtless a sister to Andrew and John DEPUTY"per "Pioneers of Wood County(Va.)by John A.House". Have John and Andrew DEPUTY in census, marriage, and tax records in Wood Co.,Va.Is there anyone independently researching this Henry DEPUTY line? I have found prior DEPUTY family research in Wood Co.,Va. to be incorrect and without ref.from census, deed, marriage ,and tax records. This female DEPUTY had two more children, born after 1830 in Oh. Not all Wood Co.,Va. DEPUTYS moved to Indiana. This female DEPUTY died Sept.15,1881,aged 85 Oh.Has any of this DEPUTY research been verified before 1860 Indiana? Would like to find at least one descendant of this DEPUTY line, willing to verify this information. Also have marriage records from Wood Co.for Andrew DEPUTY/Elizabeth Cain and Sarah DEPUTY/William TURNER. Suspect these were siblings.

Not to worry,I have no doubt that Sally aka Sarah DEPUTY b.1796 De. was the daughter of Henry DEPUTY b abt..1774 De.and wife #1 Sarah Ann WARREN. That is if Henry DEPUTY and Sarah Ann Warren has been verified? My Sally DEPUTY's -1814 marriage record is indexed with Andrew DEPUTY/Elizabeth Cain-1827. Sarah DEPUTY/William Turner-1824. all by Reece WOOLF,all in Wood Co.,Va. You'd have to be an idiot to miss it. Husband is in the 1820 Wood Co.,Va. census w/wife and 5 children under 10 yrs. I last have this family in Wood Co.,Va. deed records (1832) of Ohio. I take it when this Wood Co.,Va. Deputy family "research" was done,no one had checked actual marriage, tax, deed ,and census records? I have no doubt that Sally aka Sarah DEPUTY b.1796 De. was indeed a daughter of Henry and sister to Andrew and John DEPUTY. I see the same DEPUTY information copied over and over. Has anyone thought to verify this information for themselves? Wood Co.,Va. GenWeb has a searchable database. Sally aka Sarah DEPUTY b.1796 De.d.1881 Oh.,and as far as I'm concerned, daughter of Henry DEPUTY b.abt.1774 De.? Although I don't trust any of this prior DEPUTY research. Who knows how it was "verified"? Maybe if "Sally" Deputy had moved to Indiana instead of Ohio, she would have been included in the "research". We descend from this Sarah aka Sally DEPUTY and her husband. I have now found 9 children for this couple. Is there any DEPUTY researchers out there who have actually done their own research on this family from De. to Wood Co.,Va. and not just copied their research from someone else? The Indiana research doesn't interest me ,other than an actual death record ,or probated will of Henry DEPUTY b.1774 De.? As it was this Indiana research that skipped my DEPUTY line.

What did your mother's cousin have on Sally DEPUTY married Arehart GLAZE-1814 by Reece WOOLF (Wood Co.,Va. ) Also found in the same records,Andrew DEPUTY/Elizabeth Cain-1827 Sarah DEPUTY/William Turner-1824 .Arehart w/ wife can be found in the 1820 Wood Co.,Va. census w/5 children under 10 yrs.Wood Co.,Va. deed records STATE this couple moved to Ohio. How much attention was paid to this Wood Co.,Va,. DEPUTY research? You can't verify ANY Wood Co.,Va. DEPUTYS and not come across this family. You'd have to be TRYING to miss them. Arehart and family moved to Ohio around 1830. He died 1880 Oh. She died 1881. I have verified 9 children for this couple. I guess if they had moved to Indiana instead of Ohio, they might have been included in Deputy "research". I have no doubt Sally aka Sarah DEPUTY b.1796 De. was a daughter of Henry DEPUTY b.abt.1774 De. and wife #1 Sarah Ann WARREN. We descend from Arehart and Sarah (nee DEPUTY) GLAZE.

Zachariah DEPUTY Wood Co.,Va. census 1810

Have Zachariah DEPUTY 16-26 yrs.,Females: 1 under 10, 1 16-26 1810 Wood Co.,Va. census. Per the 1820 Wood Co.,Va.census Zachariah DEPUTY 26-45 yrs., males: 3 under 10, females: 4 under 10,1 26-45 yrs. 1830 Wood Co.,Va. census Zachariah DEPUTY 40-50 yrs.,males:3 under 5, 1 5-10 yrs.,2 10-15 yrs.,1 15-20 yrs.,females: 1 5-10,1 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 30-40. One child in 1810, 7 children in 1820, 10 children in 1830. Does that match DEPUTY research? Suspect Zachariah was a brother to Henry? Were both sons of Solomon?

Andrew DEPUTY Wood Co.,Va.census 1830

Have an Andrew DEPUTY age 20-30,females: 1 under 5 yrs.,1 15-20. per the Wood Co.,Va.1830 census. Suspect this Andrew is the son of Henry or Zachariah DEPUTY,both found in the 1830 Wood Co.,Va. census. Noticed DEPUTY researchers have this DEPUTY born either 1802 or 1807,either De. or Va.,and married in 1830? Marriage record for Andrew DEPUTY/Elizabeth CORNES,May 24,1827 Wood Co.,Va. by Reece Woolf. I also noticed some DEPUTY researchers have children for Andrew, all born in Indiana, all born after 1830. Seems the 1830 census has a female, under 5,born before 1830 in Va.
