Sorry for delay in answering. In a book of records of marriages for the Magdelen Islnds, I find only one Jean named Jean-Marie. He was married to Emilienne CORMIER on the 14th of August 1962 at Natashquan (North Shore) Quebec, Canada. In a note is added, they had 3 boys and 1 girl. I have no further information but would be happy to hear from you to discuss other possibilities. Ernest - Papa D.

Deraspe story about escaping from a British prison?

Ernie,

I'm wondering if you've run into a story of a Deraspe who escaped from a British prison by tunneling out, and then stealing a ship and sailing back to France...

I am a descendent of Marie a Bertrand a Pierre a Francois Deraspe (Marie married Romain Leblanc, son of Hilaire and Scholastique Leblanc, in 1831), and I grew up with the story. My grandmother, Frances Doucette, was told the story by her grandmother, Jeanne-Francoise Leblanc, who was Marie Deraspe's daughter.

But I did not which of my ancestors was the protagonist.

Then recently, I found an article that gave me a lead. In Les Cahiers de la Societe Historique Acadienne,Vol. 21, No. 1, 1990, Pere Anselme Chiasson wrote an article called "Les Deraspe, Histoire ou Legende" that basically echoes the story I was told by my grandmother, as a child.

I should like to know if you are familiar with the story, if we've been able to find out WHICH Deraspe was the supposed protagonist, and finally, whether it is "histoire ou legende..."

Thanks!

-- Joan Frances (Jeanne-Francoise) Vermette
