Daniel Griswold Derby was a phrenologist in the 1800s. He is my great great grandfather. He was married to Mary Ann Whitford Edkins in Indiana. She was married to Evan Morgan prior to marrying Daniel. She and Evan had one daughter Fannie Phoebe Morgan (1845-1917). Daniel and Mary Ann had two boys, Spurzheim "Spud" Derby (1855-1930)(my grandfather) and George Combe Derby (1859-1902). From at least 1860 on, Daniel Griswold Derby made his home in Moniteau County, Missouri.
Any information would be helpful but specifically I am trying to find the father of Daniel Griswold Derby. I have the following from an interview conducted by Charlotte Fowler Wells from The Phrenological Journal and Science of Health, Oct. 1892. pages 159 - 161
"The above-named phrenologist was born in Brownsville, Jefferson County, New York, June 14, 1817, and is therefore at the present writing—August, 1892—in his seventy-sixth year. Having lost his mother when he was only five years old, his father allowed him to go to Northfield, Vermont, and live with D. M. Lane, where he remained ten years, and attended district school every winter. In 1832 he attended Newbury Seminary, where he remained two years,. . . He says, 'Of my ancestors I know but little. My mother’s maiden name was Prudence Griswold, and she was a near relative of Governor Griswold of Connecticut. My maternal grandmother’s maiden name was Anna Morse. She was aunt to Prof. Samuel Finney[sic] Breece[sic] Morse, of electric telegraph fame. I have a godly wife and we are happy in our family relations.' . . . His ancestors were a mixture of English, Welsh and Irish."
Thank you in advance for your help.
