HI Jack
We have traded info before. MY Rice William Derby in the family bible claims he was born YORK STATE Oct 9, 1810. On the 1850 census he was in Jefferson Co, NY which is close to Canada. I have often wondered if he came from Canada. Also I found on the 1850 census Rice E. Derby born 1777 VT wife Nannie Jane Tyler born 1782 NY. They were living in Silver Creek, Cass co, Michigan. Have not found anything more about them. My Rice named his first son with his 2nd wife Edward and I wonder if the 2 Rice's might be father and son? It is an different name. Jan

Jan,

Not sure that I can be of any direct assistance, but I would be interested in any background of Rice Derby. My great grandfather's name was Horace Rice Derby, (October, 1837 Hampton, NY-March, 1920 Poultney, VT) and I have connected him from VT, where he lived most of his life back to England. Nothing direct in the Midwest, but I have always been interested where the name "Rice" came from since it appears nowhere else in the family.

I was thinking about ordering a copy of the SAR paper on Frank Derby to see how he fits into the family, even though I'm not presently assisting a SAR or DAR applicant in the Derby line. I am currently working on an application for a descendant of Olive Bragdon (Derby) Whitten, Elizabeth (Derby) Allen's sister, and another descendant through Josiah (Jr.), Olive & Elizabeth's uncle.

I get curious though and often play around with researching collateral lines, etc. I'm gonna get a copy of that Seward fella's application, to, so I can find out where he fits into the scheme. He did join as a descendant of Josiah Bragdon, the Patriot. Wonder if he was any relation to the U.S. Secretary of State who ramrodded the purchase of Alaska?

When u come across info for Frank Derby I would be interested. There was hearsy that he was a twin in my line and perhaps adopted away - but I think not. Also I did come across the Sewards about a year ago but did not document this as I am not a genealogist - just "curious" about my family history. If I can find the Sewards I guess you can!

Sorry, my mistake in the last post when I said that the Allen Line (From Elizabeth (Derby) Allen who married Horatio Octavius Allen) was your line, when you actually descended from Rufus Derby (b. ca 1800, son of Rufus Derby (b. ca 1758), one of Elizabeth's brothers (she apparently had 2 brothers and 6 sisters).

EuGene Smith

I am working on the Bragdon/Derby lines to assist a lady who wishes to apply for membership in the DAR. I am in SAR and do a lot of research at no charge for a limited number of men and women who wish to apply for SAR & DAR.

Anyhoo, both Olive Bragdon (Derby) Whitten and her sister, Elizabeth (Derby) Allen are granddaughters of LT Josiah Bragdon (1747 - 1778) via his daughter, Sarah (Bragdon) Derby, wife of Rufus Derby. Because of the relationship of Olive and Elizabeth to Josiah Bragdon, their descendants are eligible to join SAR & DAR.

I find no record of anyone joining DAR as a descendant of Josiah Bragdon, but have found several that appear to be in your Allen line who joined SAR as Josiah's descendants.

The men that I have found who joined SAR are as follows (off of a 2002 listing):

Frank A. Allen (joined in late 1800s)
Frank Derby
Herbert Allen Pierce
Frank Derby Pierce
Henry Seward Bowen

The 1st, 3rd, & 4th appear to be descended in the Allen line.
The 2nd appears to be descended from a brother of Olive & Elisabeth Derby.
The last one is unknown to me at this point.

So, I will certainly be happy to give you any information that I come up with on the Bragdon line. Since it is 50% of your ancestry from the point of the marriage of Sarah Bragdon to Rufus Derby it would necessarily be of equal interest to you alongside the Derby line.

EuGene Smith

I believe that "your" Olive Derby was a sister to my ggg grandfather Rufus. This Rufus married twice. I don't know what happened to first wife but second wife's last name was Peabody and in 1880 her divorced 24 yr old daughter was living with Rufus and Mrs. "Peabody" Derby. I know that there are Bragdons buried in Old York Cemetery in York, ME but don't have list of names. I'll be watching for more on Sarah Bragdon line. I guess she would have been my ggg grandmother? by marriage.

FYI: I am descended from Rufus Derby who had son Rufus. This son had son Samuel. This Samuel had son Charles. This Charles had son Ralph Edward. Except for first Rufus they all lived in Rockland, Maine. The last male in this line died in 1983. The line goes on with daughters! I didn't have any Bragdon info so I found your Bragdon query
very informative. Elizabeth Derby Allen died in Cape Porpoise, ME in 1904 ( her summer residence ) Her home was
really in Cambridge, MA. I believe she had three sons--one of whom was owner of Oriental Tea Co. Boston MA - later to become the A & P Grocery Stores.

Jerry,

Thanks for the ancestry info on the DERBY/DARBY and BRAGDON connections for Olive & Elizabeth DERBY. In your last post you noted that the first child of Rufus and Sarah DERBY was named Mary SWETT DERBY, which strongly indicates the the child's grandparents were Josiah and Mary (SWETT) BRAGDON.

Everything I have been able to find on Josiah and Mary Indicates that they had but one child, Josiah (Jr.) who was born in 1775, before Josiah went off and was killed in the Revolution. And it appears quite possible that Sarah was born after Josiah had left for the war.

The fact that the various Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com listings don't show but one child, the son (with the "Head" icon showing that child had issue), probably indicates that the persons posting that family info were likely descendants of the son with no interest in sibling's lines.

So, I need to keep working on finding ways to prove that Sarah BRAGDON was the daughter of Josiah and Mary (SWETT)BRAGDON. I think that Mary (SWETT) BRAGDON supposedly received a widow's pension, and if so, the pension papers might name Josiah's child(ren) The DERBY line and descendants of the DERBY/BRAGDON marriage all seem to be well established.

Thanks again for the information you have been providing as it has helped to fill in the missing parents and fill in some more of the ancestry of Olive & Elizabeth DERBY.

EuGene Smith

I would love to get anything I can on Rufus Derby's parents and both sets of his grandparents. Also, I would like to find the same thing on Sarah Bragdon's parents and grandparents.

I'm trying to help a lady with her family genealogy . . . she is descended from Olive Derby and John Whitten, but has not been able to go back any farther on either the Derby or Bragdon lines. However, family tradition has it that Olive's grandfather was Josiah Bragdon, a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War.

I found Josiah but have not yet found any connection between him and Olive & Elizabeth, although several people have joined SAR as descendants of LT Josiah Bragdon. Also, the names Olive and Elizabeth are both common throughout the Bragdon family during the 1700s and 1800s.

Any clues would be most welcome.

EuGene
Dear Rhoda:

I don't think there is a connection - although Abraham, s/o Robert in my tree, did end up in Pennsylvania. The information that I have is that Robert was born in Bury, Lancs.

It is Robert's wife's family that I am interested in (Susanna Holden), so I haven't accumulated a lot of information on the Derbys.

Lee Cognetta
Hi, Glenn -

I've had a look at what (little) I have here and I don't see any help for finding William & Maria. And, I should point out, that it is Susannah Holden to whom I believe I have a relationship - so we've gone beyond what is really relevant to me. It is the Holdens I am trying to trace back.

If I come up with anything that would help you take this family back any further, I will let you know.

Lee

I'm afraid I don't have any more information than what I originally posted.

Did that marriage certificate say that William was deceased in 1847, by any chance? There is a family in Bury in 1841 headed by Maria DArbySHIRE that includes a Robert born about 1833 (about right for mine) and a William born about 1824 AND has an Elizabeth (born about 1828). This is the only family that has any resemblance to the one we're looking for. I know the name is way off - but I've had other instances where the names as enumerated had little to do with the actual names.

Lee Cognetta

I had nothing to go on and have no contact with the Derby's here so this is really a great break in my family tree research. My mother was Suzy and she moved to Arkansas when she was 18 and had me a year later. There are a few Derbys here, Charles (Chuck) Gene's son). I can't remember if the three elders I mentioned are brothers or cousins. It's great to know there's a lot of family floating around.

I am seeking the parents of Olive Bragdon DERBY (1809 - 1878) who married John Wesley WHITTEN II in 1833 all of these life events were in the state of Maine. She had at least one known sister, Elizabeth DERBY (1812 - 1904) who married Horace Octavius ALLEN in 1928. There is some indication that she may have had one or more brothers, too.

EuGene Smith
The marriage certificate of 1847 does not say if William is deceased.
This family in Bury might be ours but there is no John born c1825. He would only be 16 in 1841 so is likely to be at home.
I will keep looking in 1841 and also it might be worth searching for a marriage of maria/william derby or derbyshire

Hi Lee
Have made a lot of progress today. The 1841 Darbyshire family is certainly our DERBY family.
They appear again in Bury in 1851 and all the names etc match up. William is alive and well aged 53 born in Wigan. Living at home is Richard DERBY age 16,Joseph DERBY aged 14 and Maria DERBY aged 6. (William must have been somewhere else on census night 1841)
Elizabeth DERBY had marriad Abraham Haworth in 1848 and they are in the 1851 census for Bury nearby.
On the IGI you can search the Bury St John births and this gives 3 births all to William and Maria DERBY
Hannah b1839
Joseph b1837
Maria b1845
There is also a Robert DERBY born 1865 son of Robert and Susannah DERBY

So it looks as though my John DERBY was the only one of William and Marias children born in Bolton. The rest were born in Bury.
To take it any further back we would need to find a marriage of William DERBY to Maria c1820-1825
Let me know if you can add any more
Best wishes
Glenn Piper

They were living in the same household in 1851.

John DERBY married Mary Norris in 1847 in Manchester. On the marriage certificate it says father William Derby mechanic. One of the witnesses was Elizabeth Derby.

Have been trying to find John and Robert Derby on the 1841 census but no luck so far.
I just realized this is probably the same Stephen Derby in my tree. A distant cousin but he was prob the son of George Alonzo Derby who was a us marshal in china. George was actually adopted by his new father Silas Stephen Derby so actually they aren't blood but name is Derby. Let me know I would be interested. thanks

Matthew Derby
