Dear Tania,
I'm trying to sort out some confusing information about 3rd great uncle Edgar James Gregory who married Anne Ault in 1883 in Derby. I'm not sure if this is "my" Edgar Gregory but I haven't found evidence that he isn't. Please get in touch as we may be able to sort something out.
Robyn

Do you know when he died. His age would appear on the index which might help. However certificates in the early stages is the best way to confirm that you have the right people.

Registered at N E Cheshire September quarter 1937 volume 8a page 460.

This will give you his father's name and occupation to help you get further back. There's quite a few John Derbyshire births registered 1914.

You could order their marriage certificate, which would give you their parents names so you could search further back:
Marriages Sep 1937
BRADLEY Clara Derbyshire N. E. Cheshire 8a 460
DERBYSHIRE John Bradley N.E.Cheshire 8a 460

It looks like they had Alwin M in 1938, Malcolm J. in 1940, and Nigel A. in 1949, all in NE Cheshire, and possibly a Stephen P. in 1952 in Stockport, but I don't see a daughter, unless Alwin is a female name.

You also may be able to find information about him through the RAF records.
Can anyone help with people from Derbyshire in the 1800's?

Hi all,

I am hoping you can help me get some answers please.

My 2nd great grandmother was named Ann (Annie) Ault. On her birth record and death certificate she has her father as James Ault and mother as Emma Goss. On her marriage certificate she has her father as James Meakin and mother as Emma Meakin nee Goss.

Annie was definately raised by the Aults and there are two possible James Meakin's in the town at the time of Annie's birth that could be her biological father, if he was James Meakin, but I at a loss at this part of my tree.

On Annie's death certificate she has two husbands, one my 2nd great grandfather Arthur Fearn and her first husband I read as being named Edgar Gregory Fleet (surname i cant be 100% on as its a bit blurred). Apparently Edgar and Annie had a child in 1883 named James. I cant find a record of either Edgar of James in England or here in Australia. Would you be able to help me find records on any of these people? The details of each are as follows:

Annie Ault born 1862 in Derbyshire. Married Edgar Gregory Fleet before 1883, her record states she doesn't know what age she married (I have no evidence of this marriage other than her word and that appears to be selective from the records.) Had a son named James in 1883. In 1871 she lived with the Ault's in Noel St Derbyshire and her family lived in Ashbourn Rd Derby as well. She immigrated to Australia around 1882/3.

James Meakin is only mentioned on Annie's second marriage certificate at age 65 and it states that her father was a wheelwright called James Meakin and her mother was Emma Meakin nee Goss. But Emma Goss was already married to James Ault in 1862. James Ault and Emma Goss's marriage certificate has James as a wheelwright and that they lived in Ashbourn Rd, Derbyshire and married in 1856. Married in St John's Church Derby. Annie is listed as a child in the cencus as living with James and Emma Ault as their daughter.

The other curious think is that a relative of James Ault was Zillah Ault and she was married to a John Meakin but I cant find a record of John Meakins siblings. Zillah and John were married 26 Dec 1835 in Derby as well.

I know it's complicate but any help you could give me would be great as I've come to a dead end.

Thanks
Tania Smith

Many thanks for your reply I have been looking at my husbands family. I have all the information for Prudence Nightingale Derbyshire before and up to the 1881 census and also the 1901 census where she marries Ambrose Thomas Goodwin Kirk however I am unable to find her in the 1891 census. Ambrose was a widower when he married Prudence and was first married to Sarah Ann who died in 1893 in Preston. I would be grateful if you could let me know if you have been able to find Prudence in the 1891 census I beleive she lived in Preston and was called Derbyshire her father was called Joseph and mother's name was Ellen I notice that you have the name Kirk in your family tree? May be you are a relative?

Hi there,

Francis Norman James Darbyshire was my great-great grandfather. I don't have any info about his business as a saccharine manufacturer, however his grandfather was Benjamin Darbyshire who set up a business importing and exporting between Manchester, Liverpool an Buenos Aires - initially their company was called Darbyshire, McKinnell & Co.his wife was Mary McKinnell and he was in business with John McKinnell, his brother-in-law).Benjamin's sons went into the business, too, including Francis (Norman as his family called him) and Percy's father who was called James Henry Darbyshire.

Percy was in the 5th Dragoon Guards and in the Siege of Ladysmith during the 2nd Boer War. He served in India again in 1901 and died there from heat stroke in 1903.

If you do find out more about the family business, I would love to hear about it.

Norman and his sister, Blanche Mary, were born in South America, where his father was working at the time, but Percy was born in Liverpool - I've just sent off for his birth certificate.

If you want to know any more about the Darbyshire family, I would be happy to help. Perhaps you could tell me more about your relative, Ada Williams.

Best wishes

Caroline Makein (ms Darbyshire)

Very curious about Francis, b 1865 reported as Buenos Aires in the 1901 census. His brother Percy, living with him, was b 1868 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. My relative, Ada Williams, was a housemaid. Francis is listed as a saccharine manufacturer, obviously succesful with a large household staff for his 6 children. We did not know that saccharine was manufactured that early. Does anyone have information about his business?

The photographs can be found on the Find A Grave site.
Mark was even more tenacious and found the burial record at the cemetery and even sent me some newspaper cuttings of the drowning.
It appears my John Thomas Derbyshire was in the habit of going swimming with work colleagues on Saturday afternoons. Unfortunately, this particular afternoon which was during a heatwave, he drowned.
He left a wife, Henrietta nee Booth, and a young child.

There is an inscription on a family grave which intrigues us:

Also JOHN THOMAS DERBYSHIRE
Drowned, aged 25 years August 8, 1890/3/6/8 (date difficult to read)
Interred at Oak Grove Cemetery, Falls River, USA.

Could anyone give us more information about this death, or what he was doing in the USA so long ago? All the family were cotton workers and I understand a lot of Lancashire people migrated to this area around this time.
