John Derkacz and his wife Rosalia(Rosie) Kohut came to Canada in 1897 and settled in Balcarres, Saskatchewan where they worked for area farmers until 1904. On record of the 1901 census they both listed their country of origin as Austria. They were already married with no children when arriving in Canada in 1897.

Hello everybody,
My Grandfather was Leonty (Lev) Derkach. He was a good educated man, killed by Bolshevicks in twenties. He lived in Chernigov district, Ukraina, close to Belarus and Poland. As far as I know, this surname means a name of a bird. It is not common, yet, not really rare.
Best regards
Inessa Mialenkova

Hello, my wife's maiden name is Durkacz. Her grandparents came from Poland. I'm assuming that Derkacz and Durkacz are forms of the same name. Do you have any information on this surname?? Thanks, Vince

Regarding my prev posting on Michael DERKACZ or DERKASH, I forgot to say that the archives also included a letter from 1920 saying that he was bound for his brother ALEX DERKASH, who resided at 33 Washington St., NY. Also, he has a sister Ann HESS back in Galicia.

Derkacz & Derkash

Hi -

I sent to the State of Michigan archives regarding my grandfather and inadvertantly got someone else's papers back... a Michael DERKASH (b. 15 Aug 1890). He is from "New Town," Galicia, Austria (Austrian Empire at the time; now could be either Ukraine or Poland or another smaller country). His wife's name was Teresa. His Certificate of Arrival says Mihal Perkacz (should be DERKASZ). Lists children as Nick in New York, Mamie in West Virginia, and Andrew & George in Michigan. Michael petitioned for naturalization in Arenac County, Michigan.

Anyone researching these folks? I'd be happy to pass along more info or a copy of these papers.
