Windom, Cottonwood County, MN
Edwin J. DERKSEN, 81, of Mt. Lake, died June 9, 2002, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., this Friday, at the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church in Mt. Lake with Rev. Kenneth Unruh officiating.
Interment will be at the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Cemetery in Mt. Lake.
Visitation will be held at Bjerum Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and again on Friday morning from 7:30-8:30 and also for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Phil Derksen, Matt Derksen, David Derksen; Delwin Derksen, Dale Stoesz, Kevin Borror and Joshua Brekke.
Memorials will be designated to Gideons.
Edwin J. DERKSEN, son of Jacob F. and Sedonia Otillia "Toney" (RUPP) Derksen was born Oct. 3, 1920 in Mt. Lake. He received his education at Mt. Lake Public School, and was a member of the 1939, Mt. Lake State Championship Basketball team.
He was baptized Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church in Mt. Lake, where he remained an active life-long member.
On July 15, 1943, he married Delphe SCHROEDER at the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church. They made their home in the Mt. Lake area. He farmed for 48 years--18 years raising crops and 30 years raising turkeys.
Edwin was a talented carpenter with an inventive mind. He built several houses, and worked on schools and churches--including the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church and Bethel Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake. He was an avid sports, church softball team manager, supporter of Mennonite Central Committee meat canning, and actively helped his daughter with farmer's market gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Delphe Derksen of Mt. Lake; two sons Duane (Cheryl) Derksen of Mt. Lake, and Allen (Char) Derksen of Rochester; two daughters, LuAnn (James) GAKE of Lincoln, Neb., and Laura Derksen of Mt. Lake; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Henry J. (Rosella) Derksen of Kansas City, Mo., and Lando J. DERKSEN of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Hilda (Masel) ANSON of Bellevue, Neb., and Gladys (George) RAHN of Butterfield; and a sister-in-law, Esther Derksen of Pueblo West, Colo.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert J. DERKSEN and Sam J. DERKSEN.
