Sandra

Good to hear from you again.

Could you let me know exactly what you have in regards to your Dermody family ie marriage records birth records.

If you can do that I will do some searching for you.

You mention John 1854 married twice and his wives names but not where he married each and does he mention his fathers name in any of the marriages. If he immigrated when and where to.

You did mention a James Dermody 1797? where did this come from?

Did you check out the 5 John Dermody/Darmody births/baptisms between 1850 and 1860 in Kilkenny on the IFHS site.

Do you know that he came from Callan exactly, I thought mine were from Callan originally but found they were further north between Kilkenny and Freshford.

Anyway send me what you have and I will do a thorough search for you.

Do you have my email address if not go to Ancestry public trees and you will get it there if you search for Anastatia Dermody husband William Dwyer.

Rick

Hi Rick
I am not doing as well as you are. I really have no idea where to go to get Irish information. I have 2 Anastasia's - Anastasia Lawlor 2nd wife of John Dermody b 1854 or Anastasia Dermody b 1920. I have a Maria Dermody b c1852. Could John parent of Kieran be the brother of my James b c1797 and married Ellen Murphy? I have so little Dermody information other than John's 2 marriages to Mary Ward and Anastastia Lawlor and all their children.
Anything you can tell me that might help make a connection between our 2.
Sandra

Sandra

Just an update if your still on the site.

I have discovered Maria and Anastasia's baptism in Kilkenny they were from the Three Castles area.

I also discovered a baptism for a Keiran Dermody in 1828 and would you believe that one of the witnesses was a Mary Cody who was the wife of my Kieran Dermody that married a Mary Cody.

Kieran bap 1828 had parents John Darmody/Dermody and Bridget Delany

Also discovered Kieran and Mary had two sons Michael 1833 and John 1829

I have not found either of the boys but I believe it was with one or both that Mary went to America with or to meet.

Hope your research has been moving a bit faster than mine

Rick

Colleen, granddaughter of Harry, lives in Silver Spring MD. She grew up in Clearwater, and moved here in 1989.

Are you familiar with the census records - the questions vary from year to year, but John always reported having been born in New Lebanon. I am very interested in trying to find out anything that would help me identify John's parents. Legend has it that John's father fought in the Civil War but legend was always that he was from County Cork, and his own report to the census taker was that he was born here.

I looked at the immigration records for the year she reported on the census that she immigrated (1882) with the birth year that she reported (1865), and didn't find a Johanna Sheehan coming over that year, but when I get a chance I'll search for that name Sheehan and see what I find.

I checked whitepages.com and found a William Dermody still living in New Lebanon - I had thought I might write to him. Do you know who that might be?

You two Colleens aren't all that distant relatives. Your grandfathers were brothers, your dads were first cousins, so depending on which ranking you subscribe to your're either first cousins once-removed, or second cousins.

Sincerely,
Barbara Hays
Thanks so much for responding to my post. I am a very good friend of someone (who doesn't have a membership in Ancestry.com) who is the granddaughter of Harry. Her father, also named Harry, was born shortly after Harry died, so he never knew his dad. I found Johanna Dermody's passport application for a return trip she made to Ireland in 1920, and I've found them in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses. I found them in the 1920 census living in Pittsfield MA (another Shaker community).

Family legend was that John was born in Ireland, but all the censuses show he was born in New Lebanon. I would love to be able to find out who his parents were, and what county in Ireland they came over here from. When you wrote and named John and Johanna Sheehan, did you mean you know that her birth name was Sheehan? That would be great information to have - I found 12 Johannas who came over in the year she says on the census that she immigrated, but had no idea which one she was.

And, my friend's name is Colleen Dermody!

She is in Seattle on business this week but will return next Sunday night.

Thanks again for writing, and best regards,
Barbara Hays

John and Johanna Sheehan had 5 children.
Arthur, Frank, Harry, Gert, Ella and Grace.
Arthur Dermody was my grandfather. His oldest son, my dad,
is Lawrence Dermody and he is still alive. I knew Aunt Gert and Aunt Ella very well.

I was told that John worked at the Shaker factory.

Are you related to John and Johanna?

I am seeking information about the Dermody families living in New Lebanon NY. Some family members worked for the Society of Shakers, both in New Lebanon and Pittsfield Mass. In particular, I am interested in the family of John and Johanna Dermody. Johanna was born in Ireland and immigrated in 1882, John was born in New Lebanon, in approximately 1863-64.

I have since found out that my ggrandmother's surname was Gibbons. She was the daughter of Patrick Gibbons and Mary Maillie or Melliu. This information came from Norah's death record and her daughters' birth records. I have no idea where in Ireland she was born. I'm still looking for that information. The only information I have about her is the above information and the date of 1880 as immigration date from the census form of 1900. She died in 1903 from complications of childbirth.

Re: Dermody in Ontario

Hi Melissa -

I typed a message and then something happened that it disappeared so I'll retype it. Hope you don't get this twice!

I'm sorry I have only just now started to browse the RootsWeb site and noticed your 2003 message. I'm a bit late, but I do have quite a bit of information about Mathew Dermody and Ann Griffin.

To start with, Mathew's parents were Patrick Dermody and Mary Gleeson - who came to Canada from Ireland etween 1826 and 1832.

Mathew Dermody wa born 1815 and died July 31 1890 in Ontario. His wife, Ann Griffin, was born 1824 and died March 8, 1896. They were married August 15, 1848 and lived, for a time, in a one-storey log house in Keswick, North Gwillimbury Township, Ontario. Ann Griffin came west to Saskatchewan which is where she died. I have been to her gravesite at the original St. Hubert's cemetery. There are only about a dozen graves. There is no longer a church there and in fact, it is in a field but the owner put a fence around the graves and a marker. I have a copy of a letter from Mathew's and Ann's son, Edward J. Dermody who wrote to his brothers and sisters March 11, 1896 to tell about their mother's passing.

You mention a child Olivia. I don't know of such a child, but I do know that Mathew and Ann had 8 children, as follows:

1. John Dermody (Sept. 4, 1848 - 1932) - my great grandfather - married to Charlotte Corbett (1849 - Nov. 15, 1906 or possibly Aug. 22, 1906).

2. Christopher Dermody (Aug. 15, 1851 - Apr. 9, 1922), married Ellenor Moran (1856 - Jan. 4, 1920) - her parents were Michael Moran and Margaret Dean.

3. James Dermody (Nov. 9, 1854 - Dec. 16, 1881)

4. Alice Dermody (June 4, 1856 - ??), married to Michael Hodgins (2nd marriage) - family.

5. Mathew Dermody (Apr. 4, 1858 - Dec. 16, 1876)

6. Edward J. Dermody (July 29, 1861 - 1942), married to Mary Jane Cain (?? - Dec. 24, 1889) - she and child died in childbirth and are reported to be buried in St. Andrew's cemetery, south of Wapella, Saskatchewan. We know of people who heard the sleigh bells on the horses as the family made its way to St. Andrew's for the funeral service.

7. Mary Ann Dermody (Sept. 29, 1863 - Feb. 1937) - my Dad called her Aunt Minnie - was married to Charles Lyons (Mar. 12, 1859 - 1934) - they were with Ann Griffin when she passed away.

8. Sarah Jane Dermody (Feb. 23, 1865 - ??), married to Mr. Elves - they settled in Manitoba.

As far as I know, the parents of Ann Griffin were John Griffin and Alice McHire.

Hope this is helpful to you!

Regards,

C. Dermody

Meghan,

Have you tried to track her through the electoral rolls if she was registered or even a Dermody that was registered some nearby.

Has the State tried to contact her to see if she will give you permission.

You do have the right to get a jugdement made compelling the state to release details in the case if you are not satisfied that the state has taken any and all effort to locate her.

The adoption rules have loopholes but unless you know them it is quite hard to get anywhere.

Failing all this I would then ring every Dermody in a Hundred mile radius, its tedious but effective in most cases.

Hope this helps you and good luck.

Rick

Interesting is that a William Dermody may have been their son who went to America in 1850-1851 interesting if I could find that Link.

Any info would be apreciated

Looking for anyone who has a Kyran or Kyrain Dermody early 1800's who married a Mary (Cody or Codey??), from what I believe Kyran died before 1863 and Mary went to America shortly after his death to live with her Son or Daughter as thier daughter Maria who emmigrated to Australia in 1863 showed he was deceased and Mary was domiciled in America on the Emmigration papers. Another fact we know is they had a daughter Anastatia or Anastasia who also emmigrated to Australia in 1856 with her Husband Patrick Dwyer.
Anyone with any info would greatly appreciate.

This is interesting. I am researching my husband's Dermody family and I don't have those exact people but they are from Callan, Kilkenny and the name Maria is in the family. Anastasia Lawlor b. 1877 and John Dermody b. 1854 were his grandparents. Nowhere near an exact match but interesting that they were from Kilkenny too.

Both surnames are local to Callan, but I don't see exact match.
Lawlor is also spelled Lalor, Lawler and Lawlar.
Dermody is also spelled Dermody, but the only Johns I see was one b. 1877 and a John b. 1822.
However there is a John Darmody m. to a Mary Davie in the 1829's. They lived in Tullimaine, Callan.
Kate

Mary Dermody - Tipperary

I am searching for my grandmother Mary Dermody. All the info I have on her is that she had my father young and had to give him up for adoption in 1950. His birth name was Mathias Dermody and he was adopted by the Murphy family in St. louis, MO. We have been trying desperately to find her, she would be in her mid 70's now, or anyone who might know her. My father and I are trying to get our Irish passports but the state of Missouri will not release his records without her permission (his adoptive parents have passed away). Also we know he was adopted from sean ross abey. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I'm looking for any information anyone may have on Matthew Dermody. He was married to Ann Griffin and had at least 2 daughters, Olivia and I don't know the other one, it's illegible. Olivia Dermody married in 1879 (the husbands name is also illegible) and the other daughter married Charles Lyons in 1881.
They were married in St.Joseph's R.C. Parish, Beaverton Ontario and they were residents of either Georgina Township, or North Gwillumbury Township, Ontario.
If this looks familiar to anyone, please reply.
Thanks.
Melissa Matt.

Kate,

thanks for that but I have since discovered that Keiran Dermody and Mary(Cody) were living in Kilkenny City in 1848 when Maria Dermody married Patrick Reidy(Reedy/Ready), because Patrick was a policeman they could not stay in Kilkenny so he was transfered to Kings County Banagher and then he was discharged and moved to Dromcolligher before coming to Australia. Kerin was a merchant of what I dont know but??

Interesting that both Dermody and Cody are common names in Callan but just cant find the link.

I do know that Kerin was from the Dermody "Masters" as his 2 daughters that came to Australia were school teachers and Anastasia married a school teacher in Kilkenny in 1854 as well and he became the Inspector of Schools in NSW Australia shortly after arriving his name was William Dwyer

Regards

Rick

Mary Kathryn

It is good to hear from you. I believe that your mother would be the last surviving grandchild of Michael and Ann Dermody. My greatgrandfather was Leo Dermody, your mother's cousin.
I have a few questions that your mother may be able to answer. Where are the Dermodys from in Ireland? Does she know the names of any of her father's uncles and aunts? I am interested in any fact at all about the family. I am a student at the University of Maryland, but I am from Queens, New York. My grandmother and her sister are still living, and they remeber going to visit their father's aunts in Williamsburgh.
I would appreciate any story about your grandfather and his growing up in Brooklyn.
Re: Dermody Kilkenny Ireland

I have John Dermodys born in 1824, 1854 & 1901. The one born in 1824 was married to a Mary Davis according to my records - none of which are necessarily accurate. I have very little concrete family information but I was corresponding with a Noeleen in Australia a few years ago and she had a lot of information and had written a little booklet about this particular line which is my husband's family. The one married to Mary Davis supposedly lived on Bridge Street in Callan and was a carter.
Sandra

I am looking for any Dermodys that may have lived in the grafton, West Virginia area in the late 1800's. My g-g-g-grandfather, Michael Dermody was from NYC but had his obituary printed in Grafton newspapers as well, a family link perhaps.
