DERR Margaret Sweet

Margaret Sweet Derr, 83, died Friday evening at Tressie’s Nursing Home on North Professor St. after two years of declining health.

Mrs. Derr was born Jan. 8, 1893 at 279 Elm, a house designed by her father, professor Edgar G. Sweet, an early graduate and teacher of voice in the Oberlin Conservatory of Music who also was treasurer and choir director at First Church for many years. Mrs. Derr’s mother, Leona Hottenstein Sweet, also an early graduate, taught piano at the conservatory and was chosen to play at the dedication of old Warner Hall.
Following graduation from [Oberlin High School in 1909 and] Oberlin College in 1913 as a German language major, Margaret Sweet taught in the public schools of New York state, at Wells and at Dickinson Center.
She was married in 1915 to her Oberlin classmate, Earle W. Derr. They lived in Akron, Ohio until 1939 when they moved to Rockford, Illinois, where they lived for 30 years.
Mrs. Derr taught in the Akron public schools and did much effective tutoring; her main subjects were Latin, mathematics and English but from time to time she also taught history, social studies and music.
“Non-academic teaching was a natural part of her life; she taught many young and older people at Oberlin Beach on Lake Erie to swim, later taught social dancing at Rockford. A major job there was as proof-reader for the Rockford Register-Republic,” recalls her friend, Manette Swetland.
After the death of her husband in 1968, Mrs. Derr returned to Oberlin, living at the Fireland Retirement Center until she moved to Tressie’s. A sister, Madeleine Sweet Pearson, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Derr is survived by a son and daughter, Larry W. Derr of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Mrs. Marjorie D. Williams of Belmont, Mass.; and by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She had directed that her body go to the Case Western Reserve Medical School upon her death.
Oberlin News-Tribune, Oberlin, Ohio, Thursday, December 16, 1976, p. 8.
Mrs. Margaret S. Derr
An interment service for Margaret Sweet Derr at 3 p.m. today at Westwood Cemetery will be conducted by her son-in-law, George H. Williams, of Harvard Divinity School.
Daughter of Professor and Mrs. George Sweet, Mrs. Derr ws born and raised in Oberlin, Ohio and graduated from Oberlin College in 1913. She returned to Oberlin in 1969 and died in 1976, willing her body to the medical school at Case Western Reserve University.
She is survived by a son, Lawrence, and a daughter, Marjorie (Mrs. George) Williams.
A memorial service will be held in First Church meeting room at 11 a.m. Saturday. The family suggests that a gift to Oberlin College and Conservatory scholarship funds would be preferred to flowers.
Oberlin News-Tribune, Oberlin, Ohio, Thursday, July 3, 1980,

Lorain

Hi, Sherrie! I hope that you receive this email. We need to connect. The Claude E. Derr that you are searching for is in the family tree I am working on right now! Claude E. Derr married Alice Blanche Ross and they did live in Reading, PA. I can give you more generations after Claude because he and Alice had many children. See the MOYER Family Tree or email me.

I'm tracing the Crichton line from Australia back to Scotland and stuck with David Crichton m. Margaret Younger. Have you been able to go beyond David's parents?

Hope to hear from you!

Thanks,
Heidi
Pennsylvania, USA

David Strauss (b. 1809 Lehigh PA d.1889 Seneca Ohio) would be my g-g grandfather through his daughter Diadama Strauss b. abt 1839 (m. William C. Gulick),their son, Ira David Gulick b. 1869 (m. Addie Boroff), their son Kenneth H. Gulick b. 1908 (m. Thelma Fritz), their son, John D. Gulick b. 1949 (that's me)...This line stuck pretty close to the Seneca County, Ohio area...I have Diadama's photo album (1800's) which includes Strauss people from Allentown PA. I didn't know much about the Strauss family and I believe the name died out from this branch. They are buried in the old part of Greenlawn Cemetery in Tiffin, Seneca County Ohio. I intend to search for my Strauss ancestors. Thanks for the leads.

Well you go ahead and believe that which you like. For now I will settle on what I know about this issue from Probate records and the same 1830 census as well as the Annuals.
I have mention of John who filed vouchers on Christian propated chattles in 1824. So I am pretty sure this is the same John as mentioned in the Annauls and the census.
I am decended fron Henry Derr aka Darr who was born 1774
I am planning a trip to several courthouses in several counties to reseach the deeds and wills as well as anything that can be found in the achives in Berks, Union, as well as Centre....

As for, who was Ludwig and how does he fit in?
Ludwig was the founder of Lewisburg Pa Lewis being an anglicanized version of Ludwig.
Not sure if there is any relationship to that Derr line but
Christian and him seem to always be in the same areas. What is strange is Ludwig who dissappeared while selling land plots of Lewisburg in Philly and Later declared dead by the courts had a son who settled in Bellefonte Pa the Same place and time as many of christians children also. Ludwig was too old to be christians brother but maybe an uncle or something. It is on my to do list that is rather long.

I have John from census records as born in 1793 or 1794, this seems to be too young for him to be Christian of Buffalo Twsp's son. Perhaps he lied, which wasn't too uncommon. By the way, who was the Ludwig Derr noted in the "Annals of Buffalo Township" and how does he fit in?

Christian Johns Father resided in Berks County before the revolution and some time after. He did enlist in Col Humptons rifles in Berks county and returned there after his two years service in that unit and Pa line.
You will find that John stayed in the Oley Twp area and that his father went north and west to buffalo valley with his siblings except Henrich aka Henry who went west to bedford county Pa around 1803.
I am not sure but most of Christians children it seems were put out to apprentice in various trades after their mother died. While there is no positive proof it is believed that John Learned his Trade from a Christian Derr from Berks county another noted Gunsmith.
The John From Amity Twp may have been a cousin, uncle or something But no relationship has yet been determined.

John was named after his uncle John who we know left a widow and four children on a farm in Pa was Jailed in Tawneytown Md cir 1778 for passing bogus colonials. Was pardoned to serve in a newly formed Regiment from that area on provision that he serve till end of was. Unit was known as the Tomms Creek 100 and saw service at Yorktown, John never was heard of again. Quite a story to this affair to.

Looking for information on John Derr of Bucks Co., PA. Born approx. 1790 in PA. Shown on the 1860 census in Quakertown at age 70. Listed with Elamina Derr, age 46, and Hannah, Mary and Amanda Berger, ages 13, 16 and 3, respectively. Elemina is shown on a later census (1880) with daughter Amanda, age 23, who has married. Elemina is listed as mother-in-law on that census.

Trying to figure out two things: 1) Who is the father of the Berger children in this family (and consequently where he is, i.e. dead, divorced, etc.), and 2) is this Mary Berger the same who married Herbert P. Vanderburg of New York and moved to Missouri. Any information yay or nay will be appreciated.
