Thomas and Mary A. (JOHNSON) DERRY Family - Cambridgeshire, Eng>Wayne Co., NY>Gratiot Co., MI

Hello!
I am a descendant of Thomas and Mary Ann (Johnson)Derry who emigrated to America aboard the Ship Quickstep, in May 1854 with their family. They settled in Wayne County, New York (Sodus / Arcadia Twp area).

Four of their sons--Thomas, William, John, and Alfred--came to Gratiot County, Michigan in the mid-1860s, settling in Hamilton and Lafayette Townships. Alfred was my great-grandfather. His wife was Martha Warfield, daughter of James and Marie (Knowlton) Warfield; Martha was born in Clifton Springs, Ontario County, New York. Alfred and Martha married before coming here to Gratiot County.

Thomas married Mary A. Swailes, dau of John and Minerva Swailes. They appear on the 1860 census in Sodus, Wayne Co., NY. with children.

William married Mary A. Smith.

Would like to exchange information with anyone interested in these families. Several of the descendants of these men still live in Gratiot County. I would especially like to learn more about the other siblings in the family.

Harold Lee & Nannie A. (BARBEE) DERRY Family - Connection to IA, KS, MO, OK, CA and the Cherokee Nation

SERENDIPITY: On the cover of the Jan-Feb 1996 issue of "The Genealogical Helper" magazine is an absolutely endearing photo of a father, Harold Lee Derry, born 02 April 1877, Toledo, Iowa, tenderly holding his baby daughter - his face revealing great love and pride.

Harold Derry married Nannie A. Barbee in Girard, Kansas on 24 Jan 1901. Nannie was born in Ashgrove, Missouri, 14 Aug 1874. Her mother, Elvina "Hicks" Barbee, was from the Cherokee Nation.

Harold and Nannie's daughter, Annis Louise Derry, was born in Ashgrove, Missouri. After Annis was born, the family resided in Marland, Oklahoma (previously Bliss, OK)). This picture of father and infant daughter was taken in early 1909 in Marland. Little Annis lived to be only nine years old. She came home ill one day from school. The doctor operated on her on the family's kitchen table for appendicitis, but she did not recover and died 27 Nov. 1918. It must have broken her parents' hearts!

Mr. Derry became very successful in the hardware business in Marland and died there 31 Jan 1951. His wife, Nannie, lived to be 93 years; she died in Roseville, California, 26 March 1968. The family is buried in Ponca City, OK.

Hopefully this poignant story will provide just the right clue to a researcher.

Everton's "Genealogical Helper" magazine" is a marvelous resource to bring together Internet and nonInternet researchers.

DERRYs - Marion Co., IA

The Derry branch that arrived in Marion Co., IA , in 1868, came from Brown Co., OH. Before Brown Co., the line was in Allegheny Co., PA (1790 census). The ones coming to Marion Co. were Jacob Derry (1815, Clermont Co., OH - 1899, Marion Co., IA), his second wife ( Hanna Ogden), their children, plus several from his first marriage, and their families. Jacob fathered 9 children with each wife. These 18 children were born between the years 1838-abt. 1884. Thus, it seems neither of Henry Anderson's wives were this Jacob Derry's daughters.

Mary Amelia DERRY of Much Cowarne, Herefordshire

If anyone has any information at all regarding the life of Mary Amelia Derry, born at Much Cowarne, Herefordshire, I should be interested to hear from you.

Mary Amelia Derry was possibly the daughter of Henry Sirrell. She was baptised in February 1857 at Much Cowarne, the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Martha Derry, spinster. Elizabeth Martha then went on to marry a Richard Browne several years later.

Mary Amelia was present in the Felton household of Henry Sirrell, Blacksmith, in 1861 aged 4 a "visitor" but in 1871 was still present in his household aged 15 but on this occasion described as a grand-daughter.

I have failed to find anything relating to Mary Amelia Derry after 1871 census - can anyone help please? My email address is alameda55@gmail.com.
Some of you here on this board know the web site I have dedicated to my family name. It has been two years now since my first contact with "lost" DERRY family members. I must tell you, what Joan Brown Derry did when she discovered my query on the Genforum, was just magnificent! Since then, I have had many more contacts with other DERRY family researchers. My grandfathers have been "found". It is simply just not possible for me to express my joy about this grand discovery. Rather, I will just leave you with a link to the web site. It is more than 300 pages and continually growing. There are family stories, photos, legends, folklore and so much more.
Come take a look, and see if any of the DERRY's on the pages belong to you. Here is the link to the cover page:
http://get-me.to/Derry
If you click on that link, a whole new world will be opened to you.

The death certificate of my great great grandfather has raised new mysteries. He was born in Brockville (Elizabethtown) Leeds Co Ontario in 1831. Father's name given as John Wright--so he must have been illegitimate. Mother's name not given, but it must have been Derry. Does anyone know of any young women, surname Derry, who lived in Brockville at that time, and who was born in Vermont? Both his parents were said to have been born in Vermont.

Thomas DERRY - 1860 Michigan Census

I finally found Nabby(Nabena)Jennings Derry living with her son Thomas Derry in Saginaw County, Michigan, in 1860. this Thomas(aged 29) was married to Mary(aged 23) and they had one son Thomas aged 8 months.
I found another Derry family in the 1870 Saginaw County, Michigan census but Thomas is now listed as 48 yeas old, Mary as 41, and Thomas 18 years old. There are several other children. John, 9, Ellen, 5, Mary, 5, Jennie, 2, and Stephen 3 months.
Checked the headings because they seem about 20 years apart.
I know the 1860 census is the family I'm looking for. Do they sound familiar to anyone?
I would like to know what happened to Nabby's husband, and where in Ireland this family came from.

I am searching for a Solomon Derry born in the 1860's probably in Vermont. He is the son of John Derry and Julia A Cameron. They were in Burlington by 1875. I think they relocated from some other town in Vermont. He shows up in the Burlington Directory in 1877- 1878 as Solomon Dary boarding with John Darey. Then in the 1879-81 directory his named appeared as Solomon Deary. The family showed up on the 1880 census under John Darey with the four younger children, I understand there were eight, but Solomon was not listed. I am hoping for any little clue!! Thanks, Camille

I am searching for any information on John Derry. Likely not with this spelling. We have located him in Burlington Vermont with four of his eight children on the 1880 census. Not sure when he came to Vermont. It was on a child's birth record that states he is from Quebec, PQ. According to the census he would be born in 1841. He married Julia A. Cameron, but we do not know when or where. Julia was born in Rouses Point NY. I have addictional information going forward but not backward. If this rings a bell with anyone please let me know. Thanks, Camille

Is anyone looking into the children of Jacob C. DERRY (1842-1911) and Rachel CLARK? My interest is the oldest son, William H. DERRY b 5/16/1870 in Fulton Co., Illinois d 1918. I also have Rachel's line as I am a descendant of her brother, George Wesley Clark.

Jacob was the son of William D. DERRY and Sara Elizabeth DERRY (1821-1884). I don't know William's parents, but Sara's were William John DERRY (1780-1850) and Barbara RUPP/RAPP, parents of William John were Jacob DERRY (1764-1831) and Margaret Catherine WINTZ of Maryland, parents of Jacob were Peter DERRY (d1813) and Catharina FELDMAN.

Peter may have been a brother of Baltzer DERRY.I have seen where some people have Peter as being born in Frederick Co., MD and some have him from Germany.

Looking for additional info for Derry family from Burlington, VT. The husbands name is John Derry, wife is Julia A.(Cameron) Derry. Their children are : Mary(1872),George Joseph(1874),Lilly(1878) and Ida(1880). Got this info off the 1880 census. Lilly married Phillip Barbeau in 1894. Ida married Octave Covillon in 1893. The wife Julia married a second time to Julis Tromblee in 1894. Births and marriages took place in Burlington. We assume John must have died there. Also still looking for info on daughter Mary. The son George Joseph Derry ends up in Mass married to Margaret Hayes in 1901. Have also discovered that there were 8 children in all-the first 4 were born in the 1860's. Solomon for one and we think John. That leaves two totally unaccounted for.If any of this sounds familiar to you please let me know. Thanks, Camille

Does anyone
know of Derry families elsewhere in NY, or in
VT, NH, ME? Was he related to Peter Derry who lived
at Remsen, Oneida Co NY in 1820?

Laura Jane CONRAD and Nelson Elwood DERRY

I'm looking for anyone who has information on Laura Jane Conrad or Nelson Elwood Derry, because our Grandpa is Irvin Jesse Derry, his son. Irvin Jesse is married now to Darlene Rovine Dickson, and has many relatives here in the Galesburg, Illinois area
If anyone can tell me anything about them, I think they emigrated from Ireland and ended up here in Galesburg/Berwick area, on a farm. I wish I had dates to give you, but Irvin is old and his memory is going, so he doesn't have many. He has to be about 70 or so now. Darlene is ten years younger than him.
There is one picture of his father, with two draft horses that he use to have. I don't think they have any of his mother.
Darlene and Irvin had three kids; Dennis (my ex), Cheryl, and Larry. Dennis and I had; Ben, Sheena, Matthew, and Jesse. Cheryl's family had Monica, Marc and Mindy. Larry's family had Josh, Robbie, and Adam. Yes, we tend to have boys!
My Sheena has; Jasmine and Naomi, and she is a Hinderliter now.
If you want more info, I can give it to you.
Can anyone help?
Tianca
