Just have one item...might be worth investigating..
I am not a descendant from the Desha family...but I am
related to those who have the name...due to being part
of the Deshea family...in marriage...as noted below...

Here is what I have.. going back to early Va history.
and early Sumner Co, Tn..history...as well as Maury Co, Tn... I think in Maury Co, Tn.. Not far from Nashville, Tn..

I have a brother... of my line who was Benjamin Franklin Dowell... born about 1780 in VA.., who died in Tn..(Raleigh, Shelby Co, Tn.).. June 27, 1843..(My history)... May be wrong... but that is the way it is listed..

Benjamin Dowell left VA...early in his life and went to Sumner Co, Tn.. This is where he met... and married Elizabeth Desha... May 15, 1813.. Maury Co, Tn...I think...but they were back and forth..to Sumner Co, Tn...for some of their first children...were born and died in Sumner Co, Tn...

Elizabeth (Betsey)..Desha was the daughter of Robert Desha and Elinor Wheeler.. Elizabeth Desha was born in Sumner Co, Tn..Oct 19, 1793..and died Sept 07, 1876 in Neapolis, Maury Co, TN..

Elizabeth and Benjamin F. Dowell.. had many children... , but I do not know any of Elizabeth's brother or sisters...history...

Only possible lead I can give anyone...is I have contact with some of the descendants who were a part of the Desha family... and living in Texas...today...

Robert Desha.. was born about 1738 in Pa...and Elinor Wheeler was born about 1738 at Bloombury, North Umberland, Pa...and at a time in Robert's life..He.was a Govenor of KY... "Once upon a time"...

I have a Desha family... researcher...I could provide an E-mail address that she might help you... But you will have to contact me...first... at:::: bernieandrose@juno.com

Have studied the Dowell family...out of Albemarle Co, Va...
early years... 1700's to late 1700's..
and..after looking at other records...do seem to find the
John Dowell..who came to Maury Co, Tn..

I feel sure...this John Dowell...was the son of a JOhn Dowell..who was born in VA... Son of John Dowell and Anne Franklin..

This John Dowell..married and lived in Sumner Co, Tn... They
had three children...and.. one..was the John Caleb Dowell..I think you have questioned... others who come from
this line..

I will have to look back...where I got my lead..on this John Dowell... who was in Maury Co, Tn...Now... the Benjamin Franlin Dowell... who married Elizabeth Desha... was a great uncle to this John Caleb Dowell... as... His father...John Dowell. was a brother... to Benjamin Franklin
Dowell... .. I feel sure..this is how it was..

Contact me... at bernieandrose@juno.com and I will be able to give you better details... I hadn't realize... this John Caleb Dowell... was in the family... I knew he was not a son
of Benjamin Franklin Dowell..and Elizabeth Desha...who were
in Sumner Co, Tn.. in the early years...and migrated to Maury Co, Tn... as every one.. else...was going in that direction...at that time... Early... 1800's.

Trying to help... Bernie Bolton.. bernieandrose@juno.com

As published in:
The Ohio Repository
Canton, Ohio
August 3, 1826

A gentleman who left Cynthiana on Sunday morning last, states that on the Saturday mornnig preceding, Isaac B. Desha, confined for the murder of Francis Baker, made an effort to take away his own life, by cutting his throat. He was so far successful as to cut his windpipe nearly in two, and vitally affect the roots of his tongue. His physicians deemed his recovery hopeless. >>> A report has reached here, tho' not well authenticated, that Desha died about 12 o'clock on Sunday.

I have a Charles Desha, son of Louis/Lewis Deshayes in the Whitfield Co., GA 1860 census records, his mother was Caroline Lebel/Deshayes of France. Most of the Lebel family migrated to TX in the 1890's. There are not that many Charles Desha's around. If you are related to this one, I would appreciate any info. Thanks, Pinkey

In re-looking my records on the Benjamin F. Dowell.
and Elizabeth Desha..of Sumner Co, Tn..as well , as
Maury Co, Tn...in the 1800's..

I find they had a child..named John Desha Dowell..but this child died as an infant...It is my belief... They did lose a number of children...born early in their marriage.. and th ose died in Sumner Co, Tn..

However...They had a son...named Benjamin Franklin
Dowwell Jr... who married Apina Williams and they had a son.. Joshua Lafaitt Dowell..bron April 1851 but he died in 1857..

The other possiblity...would be their son.. J Dowell born about 1865 at Maury Co, Tn..and died before 1880..at Maury Co, Tn...

I have the names of the children of Ben Franklin Dowell
and Elizabeth Desha..in my files...as well as..additional history on  daughter Adeline Dowell..who married her cousin..in Ky..;
Benjamin Frankln Dowell Jr...b. Apr 03, 1821; and
Louisa Virginia Dowell bron Aug 1829 Maury Co, Tn...and died Mar 1872..at Maury Co, Tn..

(FROM OTHER FAMILY RECORDS...- NOT FROM BENJAMIN AND ELIZABETH DESHA...BUT FROM HIS BROTHER.. JOHN DOWELL ...WAS A SON.. JOHN H. DOWELL BORN ABOUT 1809 IN TN..AND DIED BEFORE 1850.. IN TN...WHERE..?? NOT KNOWN WHERE IN TN...
De Sha Family

I have just recently been to Chattanooga TN and also through Waldo FL.. Found as many De Sha family graves as possible. Could not find Kings Point Cemetery, in TN so therefore could not locate my gr. gr. grandfather Isaac Robert Newton De Sha's place of rest. We did find some De Sha's in TN cemeteries that I do not know if they are connected to my line or not. Also in Waldo FL could not find Isaac's brother Joseph Franklin De Sha's place of rest, but we found his 2nd wife Eliza Parrish De Sha's grave and several of the children and one grandchild. Another great and exciting find was the old "De Sha Farms" as it is labeled. This was a very exciting find. I just wanted to share this with anyone interested. If I had more blanks filled in maybe I could find more answers. Maybe this info will help someone else.
Can anyone help me locate any or all of the De Sha genealogy books??? Is there someplace they can be purchased? I would appreciate any help sent my way.

I have James Desha md. Lucy Lockett 10/26/1802 in Davidson Co. TN. He was son of Robert and Elinor (Wheeler) Desha. I only found them in the 1810 Attakapas Parrish and the 1820 Catahoula Parrish census records; do you have them anywhere else?
Do you have anything on Joel Lockett, who I think was her brother? (I have info on him also in Davidson Co. TN).
Finally, I have a James Deshazo who was a witness to the will of Edmund Lockett in P.E. Co Va in 1830. Is he some kin?
Bernie,
Thanks for your reply to the message board. Atleast I know there are still people going there. Seems like alot of the messages are from several years ago.
I have some information on my branch but as "everyone else" still searching trying to get things better linked together. I actually have information going back one more generation from Isaac DeSha. I thought I found a place where it was going back three more generations, but after closer attention realized they had entered it to the wrong Isaac. So back to the drawing board!!
I am very new at this but I find it fasinating. Guess thats what it does to alot of other people just like us right???
Thanks again!

Hi Pinkey,
Glad to hear from somone again concerning our relatives. I don't have alot of statistics on record as of yet. Most of what I have is what I got from Dewitt C. Nogues back in 1994. Then of course I have been lucky enough to find more on Ancestry.com. The names you mentioned are unfamiliar to me but I would be glad to compare names and ancesters with you if you would like to email me directly that is fine. You could maybe have names and links that would help connect my branch up with yours or other branches.
Re: Robert DESHA - 1800 TN land documents

I read you on" Robert Desha." . He was the father in law of Benjamin Franklin Dowell..born in VA..about 1780 and migrated to Sumner Co, Tn..after the turn of the 1800's..

We may have the wrong Robert Desha... but it is possible he was there...at that time...He would have been 62 years old...when he made that land purchase..

My records note that Robert Desha...was born in Pa..about 1738...His wife..Elinor Wheeler..was born about 1738.. near Bloombury, North Umberland, Pa..

But his family migrated to Sumner Co, Tn... but I never knew when.. His son in law..Benjamin Franklin Dowell
served in the War of 1812 as farrier in Capt John Baskerville's Regiment in Tn... ..So.. our records note
that Benjamin F. Dowell...and Robert Desha's daughter..Elizabeth (Betsy) Desha..who was born Oct 19, 1793 married May 15, 1813.(either in Sumner Co, or Maury Co, Tn.." They were back and forth..from my records..".

Elizabeth's father.., Robert Desha later migrated to Ky...where he was a Govenor of that state.. I'm am not sure if all my records are completely correct...Have no idea when the man died...but he was in Sumner Co, Tn.. we know..by (1793.).and that would be early.. for it was my understanding this territory{Sumner Co} was not heavily populated in 1793.. More like after 1795 before the migratiion began to have more traffice from Va and North Carolina...

I have some of the Desha's from this family who I correspond at times..and it would be nice to have the information you have, .. if no trouble.

I feel some of these descendants would be pleased to have the informaion....and I can pass it on to them.....
Thank you..
I am a great granddaughter of John Ripley Desha. He was married to my great grandmother Mollie Isabelle (Belle) Eldridge. They were married July 27, 1887 in St. Augustine, Tx. They had 5 daughters: Sallie Elizabeth (Lizzie), Minnie Melinda, Carrie Belle (my grandmother), Hattie Estelle, and Alice Mae.

David Shelby was John Ripley's brother. I know that he was born in Harrisburg, Catahouls Par., La. and died Oct. 4, 1903 in Wallisville, Tx. Their mother and father was Eleanor Ripley (Moore) and Joseph G. Desha. Joseph G.'s mother and father was Lucinda Lockett and James Desha.

I hope that this helps you. Let me hear from at ladyann58@hotmail.com.

Thanks,

Ann

Of the family of Benjamin Franklin Dowell...and
Elizabeth Desha.. I failed to answer your question..

Of the family...this couple had many children...and
of the names..John Dowell...from this union..There
was one...but his initials was..John Desha Dowell
and he was born Sept 26, 1832 and died in childhood.. Whether in Maury Co, Tn..or Sumner Co, Tn.. That..My records..do not show...but of the many
children..born of Ben Franklin Dowell and Elizabeth
Desha... I find no other John's in that family.. There
were many John Dowell's ..within the family...that were
connected to this family..of other branches.. as Benjamin Franklin Dowell's parents...were John Dowell and Anne Franklin of Albemarle Co, Va..
Benjamin Franklin Dowell..was born about 1780 in VA.
and died in Shelby Co, Tn..June 27 1843.. but Elizabeth
Desha Dowell..died Sept 07, 1876 in Neapolis, Maury County, Tn..
Hi Beth, Are you Emma Beth, born 11 August 1945?

My email address is fholden@worldnet.att.net

This geneology stuff is fascinating and confusing...

Joseph Franklin was the brother of Isaac Robert Newton. Apparently there was some confusion in regards to George W. and Mary Ann. Some descendants have stated that they thought his name was Joseph DeSha and his wife's name was Mariah Faye Whitehead, daughter of Elliot (or Elat) Whitehead, a ship captain. I don't have any info. on Elliot. Mary Ann died in in GA or FL (don't have a date). George and Mary Ann (I'll just call her this) were divorced December 22, 1826 by Act of General Assembly of GA...filed from Superior Court, Clark County, GA. George W. appeared as head of household (with no family) in 1820 census of Beaufort District, SC, in St. Peter Parish, and (as Doct. DESHA) in 1830 census of Lexington District, SC (with one son). Said by family tradition to have been a doctor and a jeweler. Also, I don't show George's parents.

Please write.

fran

Seeking information about George W. DESHA who may have been living in SC in 1820 as per Federal Census listing.

George married a Mary/Maria/Mariah WHITEHEAD whose father may have been a ship's captain named Elliott or Ellat etc. About 1826 Georg and Mariah would have at least one boy named Joseph Franklin DESHA and possible another son named Newton.

At some point before the 1850 Alachua County Florida census, Joseph Franklin is grown, married to Adaline Parrish and settled near Waldo FL. An older woman in the household is Mary A. Hunter. This may have been Franklin's mother Whitehead DESHA, divorced, remarried to a Hunter and now widowed.

Any information would help. Thankyou

Thank you so much for your reply. My grandmother Stella Anna deSha (Thomas) was a daughter of Joseph Finnegan deSha of Waldo, Alachua County Florida. She had two sisters, Eady Mae and Beatrice (we called her Aunty Bee). There were brothers as well. Her parents were Harriet Masiah Beasley and Joseph Finnegan deSha. Harriet's parrents were Eady Woods and Madison Randolph BEASLEY originally of Emanuel County GA. Joseph Finnegan's parents were Eliza A. Parrish (her folks: Maria A. and Ezekial Parrish) and Joseph Franklin deSha whom we now believe to have been the son of Mariah Faye Whitehead and George W. deSha. Have you any more information on Newton, the Whiteheads, Mariah Faye? What is your connection to George? My email is blearn@learnyeats.com if you wish to write me there. I will gladly swap any info I have.

Fran,

Eugene DESHA family historian is also in your I believe. We have his history. After speaking with my cousin Fay DESHA he said he thought that Franklin (Joseph Franklin) DESHA, our first DESHA in Florida, was the brother of Robert Isaac Newton and son of George and Mary Ann whome we refer to as Mariah or Maria Whitehead. My family may be confused about the Mariah Fay as our Parrish grandmother is sometimes referred to as a Mariah Fay. I am in contact with several Florida DESHA researchers and we think we have a good bit of the tree here.

Do you have any more info on Mary Ann or George? Someone wrote me she divorced George in Clarke County in December 1826. So far I have been unable to find that document via the courthouse there. It is possible that Mary Ann accompanied Franklin to Florida as a woman about her age lived with him. Her name was Maria HUNTER but she could have remarried following the divorce and then been widowed. I am very interested in finding out who George (some call him Joseph) and Mary Ann/Mariah were. Do you know anything about Mary Ann's father Elliott/Elat?

Could I have your email to write you please. Thanks

I'm not quite sure if this is the correct line, but I am named after a grandmother of mine named Julia DeForest DeSha. I don't know if you are still looking for relations of the DeSha family or not, but I might be able to provide some information or direct you to the right people. I am of the Stone family with relatives in Pensacola, FLA and Mobile, Alabama. Please do not hesitate to contact me at the following email address: desheas@hotmail.com

Hi Mary, My Great Great Aunt Caroline was married to Lewis or Louis Desha, of NW Georgia, in Murray and Whitfield County, some of the names you have mentioned are related to him. I know she married Louis in TN, because their first child was born there, and then had her second child in Whitfield County, those two children were Charles and Lillie Desha, she had another child with her and used the name of O'Neal, then moved to Tennessee again, lived in Davidson County, Nashville....in 1880 and two more children named Fannie and Eugenia. She was listed as a widow. The first two DeSha children were raised by my GGgrandmother Victoria Lebel, and for some period of time so did the son of O'Neal. Then she disappeared from the census records, and we have not been able to locate anyone in that family since, if you have any info on her I would be grateful. The Desha/Deshay/Deshayes family you speak of can be found in census records in 1860/1870/1880 in Murray/Whitfield Counties in GA. Good luck, Pinkey Bradford
