You must be my cousin. My father is Rene Mathieu of North Bay, Ontario. His mother was Albertine Desilets, sister of John. I was always told stories about uncle Johnny doing cartwheels in front of church on Sunday mornings!
Who is your father? How much history do you know about the Desilets. Hope to hear from you. I live in Calgary now, but my Dad still lives in North Bay.

Re: Joseph Desilets Salem Massachusetts

Bonjour,

Desilets is definetely a Quebec surname. I have a large database on the Desilets family fairly complete on the Quebec side. As for Desilets marriages in US, I'm obviously missing some. I don't have the marriage you're looking for.

But searching my database I come with a possibility (no proof): Louis Désilets and Clarisse Livernoche married in Manchester, NH, St. Anne church on 19 April 1857. They had at least 12 children, including Joseph born in 1866 for which I know no outcome. He could be your man. Even if I have no proof of this I'm sending it so that you might be able to prove it right or wrong. Let me know at cloutierjraf@videotron.qc.ca

Good luck!

Roger
They lived in North Attleboro, Ma. all their lives after that. Say about 1910 on until their deaths.

I have found a lot of Desilets/Levesque in the census, but nothing about them before marriage. Would appreciate any help you can give me. Witnesses were John Guindon and Henri Gosselin. Church records p. 22 George Desalet, age 27, of Black River, son of Phelias Desalet and Olive Lablanc, born Three Rivers, Quebec, occupation raft man, married 23 Sep 1888 at Alpena to, Julia Yeddo, age 17, of Black River, daughter of William Yeddo and Mary Isabel, born Michigan. County Records Book B No. 150 –copied from alpenalibrary.org"

"Black River" -Is this near you?? I may take you up on your offer about looking up some stuff in the future if you had the time. I can share more Desilets info with you if you want.
I have just recently started researching my Desilets family line. My great grandmother was Marie Eulalie Desilets born in 1879 in St Eulalie, Quebec. Her father was Joseph Desilets born in 1854. His father was Francois Decilets married to Lucie Terriau. I can find them on the 1851 and 1861 in St Gregoire. I haven't been able to connect Francois to other Desilets in St Gregoire. Also could the St Gregoire Desilets be related to the Desilets in St Wenceslas? I suggest this because Francois moved to St Wenceslas in the 1860's sometime.

My Great grandfather George Desilets was born in St Gregoire Quebec (near Trois Rivieres) on November 1 1859 and at some point moved to Alpena MI. He married Julia Guidon Yandeau September 23 1888 (location unknown). In 1889 they had a daughter Irene and in 1899 moved to Harrisville NH. He died on October 6 1952 at the age of 92 and is buried in Harrisville.
His father was Philix (Felix?) Desilets died 1899 and mother Alex (LeBlanc) Desilets died 1903. In George's 1952 funeral register there are; "Mr & Mrs Luger Desilets, Joseph R. Desilets, Mr & Mrs Leo F. Desilets." I have more info and pictures, i just have to look through my stuff to find it. It sounds likely George is related to other Desiletses from the same area of Quebec!!!!!

Hello,

My name is Jim Gettings a retired police officer. I am helping Richard Barton with his family research since I subscribe to Ancestry.com and he does not. I teach an ROP law enforcement class at Serrano High School in Phelan, CA. My next door neighbor at the high school, Richard Barton teaches English. His mother is Alma Jeanne Ruth Barton nee: Adamson, who is still living. She married Richard Ewing Barton in Los Angeles in 1946. Alma Jeanne's mother was Alma Desilets who married Thomas Adamson, Richard Barton's Grandmother. His e-mail is: richardbarton_360@msn.com. My e-mail is: GETTINGSJAMES@aol.com. I am sure that you are probably a cousin or distant cousin of Richard Barton. Could you e-mail him or I, or both, with additional information on the Desilets side of the family. Thanks in advance.

Sicerely,

Jim Gettings
My grandfather, Paul John Desilets, born 1900 in Escanaba Mich, was the 12th of 15 children of Paul J. Desilets. He and his wife, Malvina (Heon) Desilets emigrated from St. Maurice (sp)near Montreal Canada.
My grandfather, Paul moved to Toledo Ohio and married Myrtle Cooper. They had four children. My father, Richard is the youngest. I have one brother and two sisters.
We traced the name to a Catholic cemetery in Quebec. There are many Desilets in Michigan.
Do you have any further information regarding the Canadian roots?

I don't know if you ever got any answers to this query, but Alphonsine Desilets was sister to my great-grandmother Bernadette DesFosses Vancelette (1873-1926) They lived on Boston Street in Lynn for many years. According to my records, Henry was born in 1879 in Quebec and died May 14 1957; Alphonsine was born Aug 10, 1877 and died November 28,1872. They had 10 children:
Horace: born about 1904
Bernadette: January 18, 1906-Feb 6, 2000
Jeannette: Feb 5, 1909-Sept 1991
Hilaire Oliver Joseph: JUne 28, 1910-Aug 13, 1977
Thomas: Jan 30, 1916-Sept 20, 2004
Rita: abt 1918-May 1999
Edward: Nov28, 1919-Sept 30, 1989
Joseph: May 20, 1921-Jan 7, 1996
Alice Emma: ?
Flora: ?
My father remembers your great-grandmother as his "Aunt Birdy (Bertie?) but I only vaguely remember meeting her when I was a little girl in 1977 at my grandfather's funeral. (He was her nephew Henry)
I have a picture of the family taken sometime in the 50's, but I don't have the people id'ed yet! Email me and I will send you a copy, if you want. I would also be very interested in any pictures you have and would like to share. I have the DesFosses line back for many generations. I look forward to hearing from you:)
Sue Walker

Dear Roger,

I was wondering if you could send me a copy of the Desilets information that you have. My great-great grandfather was Henry Joseph Casemir Desilets son of Oliver Desilets and Elizabeth Trudell. According to the World War I draft card his name is listed as Joseph Henry Casemir Desilets born November 19,1879 in Quebec, Canada. My earliest record of him in United States is the 1900 census in Haverhill,Massachusetts and his marriage record in 1901 in Newburyport,Massachusetts. Any information on the Desilets line is appreciated greatly. Thanks so much,~Meghan Reardon

Albert Desilets, b. 1877, Canada > Manchester, NH, m. Anna ?

I've read the other messages on this board and haven't seen the people I'm looking for listed yet, so I'm jumping in. My great-grandmother was Jeanne Rose Desilets, daughter of Albert Desilets and Anna. I've located them only on the 1930 census and his WWI draft registration and have very limited info.

I know that:
Albert was born in 1877 in Canada
Anna was born around the same year and also in Canada
They lived in Manchester, NH
He was a carpenter for L.M. Shattuck Co.

I'm looking for:
Albert's parents
Anna's maiden name and parents
Immigration dates

If you have any info that would help, I would really appreciate it, and would be happy to share anyhting that could possibly be of interest to you. I would also love to meet relatives - I know a lot of people who have posted here are from the Manchester area and I am also, but don't know yet if/how we could be related.

Thank you,
Steph Plourde-Simard

I would love to get in touch with you regarding this post. I know its been quite a while since you posted. I believe the information that Al wrote was correct. I just found another cousin (makes 3 now) that all had the same information, as he did and as I have. It turns out that Landry was the English name that Francois (later Francis) took when he came to the states. (Terrien meaning land).

I am hoping to learn more about the Desilets side as well. In the census, Mathilda has 2 sisters living with her family in various years (an Ida and an Edith). I would love to finally connect them all,and perhaps with your previous research you could be of great assitance.

Thank you.

Bonjour Donna and Janice,

I'm sorry to say that your Desilets are not connected in any way and come from two different ancestors. The Desilets surname did not exist in France. It was "invented" in Quebec as an alias, 3 times. One of those 3 families has died off for the lack of male descendants. One of the remaining Desilets families descends from Antoine Desrosiers. The other one descends from Jacques Mousseau. I'll explain.

Antoine Desrosiers married Anne LeNeuf du Hérisson and settled in Trois-Rivières around 1645. One of his sons, Michel married and settled a few miles down the St- Lawrence River in front of small islands (in French, "Islets"). So he was nicknamed "des Islets" (from "the islands"). All of Michel's descendants have kept the nickname as a surname. They account for about 90 % of the Desilets found today.

Jacques Mousseau married Marie-Anne Daunay and settled his farm on an island in front of St-Sulpice in the St-Lawrence River around 1700. (Trois-Rivières and St-Sulpice are 55 miles apart). The Desilets surname was invented here again for the same reason as above. Less than half of Jacques Mousseau's descendants have kept the nickname as a surname and they account for about 10 % of the Desilets of today.

Janice's Desilets are descendants from Antoine Desrosiers. Donna's are from Jacques Mousseau.

I can provide a complete Desilets line for each of you from my database.

If you want the line or if you have question, please e-mail at: cloutierjraf@videotron.qc.ca

Salut !

Roger
I received another response and Delia Lumena must have change her name when she came to the US. According to the response I received her name was Marie Lumena Desilets and the birth date and sibling names match. Her parents were Napolean Desilets and Elizabeth Pichette. Napolean Desilets parents were Louis Jacques Desilets (born 1810) and Esther/Stephanie Savoie.Louis Jacques Desilets father was also Louis Desilets and the spouse was Charlotte Contant. Marriage : 1833-07-29. They were from St;-Ambroise-de-Kildare (Joliette County) Quebec.
Do you have any matches to any of these people? Perhaps they were brothers or cousins. I hope you find something that matches. Do you know the origin in France of the Desilets family?
Thank you for any help you can offer. Donna

My great grandmother was Delia Lumena Desilets born in Joliet, Quebec Feb. 6, 1865. She had the following siblings: Alida,Cordelia who had two daughters who were Catholic nuns named Sister Bernedette and Sister Mictill Decose; Marie Louise,Joseph, Mathilde,Wilfrid, Daria,Arthimise, and Alma. Lumena married Guilliam (William) Joseph Hoag and moved to Glens Falls, NY where I grew up. Do you have information on this family of Desilets and their background? Any info would be appreciated.
I must be your cousin. My great grandmother was Delia Lumena Desilets, Alida's sister. She married Guilliam ( William) Joseph Hoag and moved to Glens Falls, NY where I grew up. Do you have any more info about our family?

Query on Desilet/Doucet(te)

Does anyone have infomation on a Thomas Desilets? As near as I can figure it, He lived in Lowell, Mass roughly 1920-1940. He married a Roseanna Doucet or Doucette and it seems they had a son Norman.

Well,
I don't need infomation on the 8 generations of Desilets. Thanks
According to an obit I have for Lea Doucette, my GGGrandMother who died in 1922, it lists as her bearers 5 of her sons and a Thomas Desilet who I would assume to be a son-in-law. I assume that because in her death notice it also mentions a Mrs Thomas Desilets as a daughter.
14 years later when her son Theodule died, it mentions in his obit Thomas and Normand Desilets among his bearers. Maybe they're brothers, I think maybe they're father and son

I do have in my files a Marie Doucet or Doucette that might be the Marie Lea that you have. According to census records she was born around September 1881.
