I am not a Desmarais, but a very good friend's mother was. He is deceased and I ended up with his mother's photos and some letters. Would love to get them to some one in the family line. I would want to make sure they were preserved. I know he had an aunt in Quebec and I found a few other pieces when I did a brief search. I will try to find what I did and give you some info. If there is a connection, would love to get the pictures to you. Some go to the early 1900's
Linda Kaye at rogersdigger@gmail.com

jkdnbr ~

You had mentioned my grandfathers brother, Israel, in one of the posts. I saw a newspaper clipping when going through some things of my grandfathers that said that Aurele's brothers, Israel and Lionel, were living in Saint-Zenon at the time of my grandfathers death [2/1968, Pawtucket, RI]. The newspaper clipping also mentioned that his parents were Louis and Mary (Huppe) [although all info I have suggests her name was Marie].

Another person posted that my great uncle Adelard is said to have married an Yvonne Bombardier, 22 Oct 1938, Magog. Isreal may have married an Annette Mineau or Annette Loiseau, 28 SEP 1938, Louiseville, Maskinonge, QC. I am not sure about the last name for Annette. On another site, I was given the following that causes the confusion:

*2nd Wife of [1] Louis Joseph Desmarais +Marie Huppe m: January 02, 1888 in St. Joseph, Biddeford, Maine ----

Adelard Desmarais +Yvonne Bombardier m: October 22, 1938 in S.M.M., Magog, Comte de Stanstead ----

*1st Wife of Aurele Desmarais +Marie Dupuis m: May 13, 1925 in Nativite de la B.V.M., Montreal ----

Israel Desmarais +Annette Loiseau m: September 28, 1938 in Louiseville ----

Michael

Are you still doing your Desmarais genealogy? Mine is from the same area as yours. My Desmarais were Red River and Minnesota, from Scotland, and then from .St. Sauvier, Paris, Seine, France. So far, in a line, I have the following.

Emma Desmarais (Red River) (married to Allisons some of who settled in Minnesota)

Anna Desmarais

John Desmarais and Christina (nee Anderson)

Baptise Desmarais and Sophie (nee Erasmus)

Francoise Desmarais and Marie Suzette (nee Saulteaux)

Louis Desmarais and Catherine (nee Forest)

Francois Desmarais and Marie Terese (nee Pastoral)

Paul Jean Desmarais I (also de Marets and dit LaHaye) and Marie Terese Tetreau

Jacques Desmarais(also de Marets and dit LaHaye) and Marie Laport
My mother-in-law is descended from this couple. Their son, Louis Treffle Desmarais, born in Saint Francois in 1873 was married to Arthemise Pepin in Sorel. These are my m-i-l's grandparents. I found them in the 1900 census in Hartford, CT but can't find them after 1906 (Hartford city directory). I think that they went back to Canada but I don't know where they settled. Their son, Edmond Joseph, married Mary Rita Veno in Halifax and they immigrated in 1928 to Buffalo, NY where my m-i-l was born.

Is there anyone else researching Olivier/Lea or Treffle/Arthemise? Thank you!

There were several children and many of them were in the brotherhood. I have heard that we are descendants of Paul Desmarais. Do you have any information that would confirm the link.

Hi Carol, we are definitely looking at the same family line with Napoleon Desmarais who married Marie Josephine Parent on the 27Feb1876. but he also appears to be the father of Paul Desmarais (abt 1873) and Marie Desmarais (abt 1876) who appeared on the 1881 Canada census living with Albert and Alphonsine Touchette. I have sent an email to what was your email address in 1999 but am trying to contact you by this post as well.

Garnet

My wife's family, the Desmarais, started near Paris, France, migrated to Quebec, Canada, down to Rhode Island, across to Minnessota and up to Red Lake Falls. They lived in several Canadian towns in Quebec, and then settled in Minnesota.

Thank you for your response. I think I have found a relation--just waiting for her to prove connection. I do wonder if your Desmarias are related by some out-branch since the ones I am searching also went to Vermont--at least some of them. One married into the LaChance family--also from Canada and Vermont. Linda Kaye

Hello Linda, My husband's name is David Desmarais, and I have been doing research on his family from Canada. Since I have the account with Ancestry.com, he forwarded your message to me. Your two messages were sent to my husband's e-mail, however he is not the same David Desmarais who posted the original query. I think it's wonderful that you are trying to find family who would benefit from the old photographs, but I have no reason to believe they are our relatives. My husband's ancestors were Onile, b. 1902, Pierre William, b. 1880, and Joseph Desmarais, b. 1837. They did all emigrate to Vermont, as I'm sure a number of French Canadian did. Thank you for the message; I hope the photos end up with the correct descendants.
David, I just looked again and found that the parents of Jeannette, Lucille and Charles Demarais were Authur Desmarais and Odila La Pierre. Jeannette was born in Canada May 1, 1908 and she died in November 1994. I actually met her one time at Roger's house in Sedona, Arizona. And yes, she was married twice--LaChance and Sanders. Look forward to hearing from you. Linda Kaye Rogers rogersdigger@gmail.com (Would love to hear from anyone else who reads this post and is related. The pictures need to find a good family home!)

David, I have just come into possession of a large # of old photographs that include the Desmarais family of Canada---who must have moved to VT at some time. I think from Quebec--Anyway, there is Jeanette, who married Ernest LaChance (born c1909 in Millspond, VT) and had son Roger Eduoard in 1933. I think Jeanette later Married Charles Sanders. Then there was Lucille who married at Bilodeau, and lived in Quebec, (Sherbrooke) And Charles E. Charles died in MA, USA in 1993. I think Jeanette died in 2001. I am working off of just a few papers that were among Roger's things. His wife died last month and this is how I came into possession of the photos. They had no children and I was a close friend and executor of Karen LaChance's will. I would very much like to trace some living ancestors who would be intered in these photes. Many appear to be from the early 1900's. Some are of the LaChance family as well. I think they must have been Jeannette's and then passed to son Roger. Please let me know if you are related or know of those who may be related. Contact me at rogersdigger@gmail.com.
