If you are having trouble finding Deters in US census . . .

The "Deters" name is not pronounced the same in the various parts of the U.S. The originial pronunciation by the immigrants was something like "Day-tuss". If you are having trouble, use a phonetic spelling, e.g., in the 1850 census, my family's name was written "Datue". In 1860 it was correct as "Deters". But I have also found the same family members as "Daters", "Datus", "Daeders". Today in the Cincinnati area, it is pronounced as it looks, "Dee-ters".

Teater-Teter YDNA Project

Several Teater-Teter cousins began a YDNA project in 2009 to test unproven theories connecting Teter families of the 1700s-1800s. Our ten participants so far include descendants of Samuel Teter and Mary Doddridge, George Teater & Sarah (Pearis?), Samuel Teeter & Marium Smither, Hans Jorg Dieter & Margaretha Luttmann, Elisha Teeters & Mary Wilson, James Teeters & Esther Shook, George Teter & Sarah Fowler.

A pattern is emerging among descendants of George Teater & Sarah (Pearis?) and of Samuel Teter & Mary Doddridge. Other participants are currently unique.

We need more participants from these family groups and from groups that are not yet represented (Deeter, Deter, ...). Males with a variation of the Teter surname inherited through their paternal line, from their biological father, paternal grandfather, etc., qualify to participate. Observers are also welcome.

After joining us at http://groups.ancestry.com/group/59352241, qualifying males can contact me to request a coupon code for the 46-marker YDNA test from Ancestry ($143.20, 20% off of $179). Teter daughters, or descendants of daughters, may also request the code to order tests for qualifying male participants. The coupon code is valid through December 31, 2011.

I am glad I could help. I also have the locations of most of the places where the early Deters are buried in Michigan. Most of them are in Holland, MI & Newaygo, MI. I have a ton of info & links to share, & have the ancestry traced back to Germany into the 1600's. Your info was helpful to me as well. I will share more tomorrow.

Wow! I got notice on my phone about your posting, and was able to read it (unfortunately, typing my reply would have taken too long), and I was so amazed at the info you had! I have made additional discoveries since my original posting almost 12 yrs ago, but nothing beyond Arnold! You have broken through a major brick wall. Since my first place in America that I could locate them was Ohio, your further finding in Michigan was exciting! My husbands family is from Michigan, and were hoping to make a genealogy trip there in the future.
Thank you so very much!
Hope you keep in touch!
Laura
I saw your request for info about the Deters of Oregon, and more specifically, Arnold Deters and Francis Deters. I understand the request is a decade old, but if you still need the info I think I can be of some help.

I have been researching my family and found a wealth of info from family here and in Germany.

Here is what I have and what I know:

Arnold Deters is the son of Jan Kleine Deters. (Jan was my great-great grandfather's brother)

Jan Kleine Deters immigrated from Alte Picardie Germany to Allegan County Michigan in 1865 with his brother Jan Hindrik Kleine Deters. They sailed to America on a ship called "Hansa" which departed from Bremmen Germany.
Jan married Gerrit Dina Vanderriet in June 1869 in Fillmore Township, Allegan County Michigan, and a few months later sold his farm in Michigan and set out for Kansas with his new wife and some of her family.

I have copies of ship manifests where Arnold traveled back and forth from the US to Germany at least twice. I also have a copy of his Passport.

I haven't found any documentation, but remember reading somewhere that Arnold died at sea on one of his trips to Germany but I don't know for sure.

I also have the direct lineage of this branch of the Deters family dating back to 1580.

Another good place to look for information on Deters in the Pacific Northwest is a website www.bradandkathy.com
click on the genealogy link and search for Deters. They have a bunch of basic info too.

I hope I helped or can be of help to you in your search.

Thanks,
Jason Deters

Regina, SK
DETERS_On Friday, January 28, 2005 Oscar Deters, late of William Booth Special Care Home in Regina and formerly of Francis, Saskatchewan passed away at the age of 90 years. Oscar was born in Czechoslovakia May 15, 1914. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1927. Oscar married Cora (Kennedy) in 1943 and they farmed in the Francis area until Oscar was injured in 1971. This injury forced the family to move to Regina as they could no longer manage the farm and needed to be near medical care. Oscar is survived by his wife Cora; sons Larry (Audrey), Garry (Jane), Dennis (Kathie) and Morley; grandchildren Tim, Colette, Todd, Monica, Auren, Kristin and Ryan (Sandra); sister Blanche and brother Alfred as well as numerous other relatives and friends. A private family interment will take place before the service. A special thank you to the staff of William Booth for the years of wonderful care given to Oscar.

Looking for info on Deters clan. Ggrandfather Frances J. Deters, born in Kansas to Mary Gottsacker (also from Kansas) and Arnold Deters (from Germany). Frances and brother Joseph came to Oregon around the turn of the century. Frances married Henrietta Dorothea Weinrich, settled, had children and later died in 1966. Looking for info on Frances ancestors, and his son John (aka Jack) Deters. There is also a Ronald Morrow that may be a grandson of Frances-but not sure. Can find no other Morrow in family, but he was a pallbearer at Frances funeral, and listed off to the side on the funeral homes worksheet for John/Jack Deters. Would like to be able to put all of the pieces together.

My gggrandfather Arnold Deters was born in Germany, married his wife in Kansas, but the 1885 census said he came to Kansas by way of Ohio.
I have something similar. Walburga Niehe was born in 1804 and married Johan Deters in 1826 in Werlte. They had a son, Johan Herman Deters, who was born on September 28, 1840 in Germany. The son did come to St. Louis in 1863 alone, but I don't know if the parents or any other family members came to America.

He died in 1956 in Cincinnati, Ohio without having any children. It will be mid summer before I am in Ohio to check out the public records on him and his brothers. They did have offspring. If you think they may be part of your search please email me at dsdonell@atlantic.net with you e-mail and I will send you all the information I find.

Deters in Quincy, Adams County, IL

My grandmother was Agnes Katherine Deters who married John Henry Bangert. She was the daughter of Joseph Bernard Deters and Anna Josephine Brinkman. I remember many of her brothers and sisters, Louie, Bill, Christine Jansen, Mayme Rineberg, Francis Winking, Rena Renshaw etc. It was a very large family by today's standards. Also there was a Clinton, Iowa connection. And also a Missouri connection. I can remember vaguely a Jack Deters, and also someone named Dorothy Lou and Wendy that visited my grandparents in Quincy. This was the Louie Deters family I believe. Please contact me at Mhoaglin@aol.com, as I am just beginning to research my Deters line and would love to make connections and compare notes.

Dear Judith (and Val),

Unfortunately the Ohio Deters and the Michigan Deters are not connected. The family Val and my wife come from constitutes of 7 brothers, 1 remained at home in Alte Piccardie,Bentheim, Hannover, Prussia, Germany, 6 moved to Michigan of who 1 returned to the Netherlands and started the Kleine Deters-family. As Deters is a patronimical name it's very hard to trace the origins unless you know when your ancestor moved to the US and with what boat from where etc.

Good luck. You can view the Deters-home page at http://www.gironet.nl/home/lpck

And if you still want the book, let me know.
Hi all
I have just come upon your messages with interest. I received from a relative in Holland a rough draft of a book entitled "My Name is Deters,Kleine-Deters" by Frank Laurens. He did a fantastic job of tracing from Germany, the name Deters/Kleine-Deters. Do either of you know one generation further, or maybe even Brothers or sisters of the person you are looking for? Frank has alot of detail but the American line seems a little unclear.
BTW, I'm in BC,Canada
Val
