Hello! I am related to the Northern IL Dettman's. My grandmother was a Dettman. Her father was Frank but her mother's name was Marie. I wonder if we are on the same track or off. I am just starting this side of the family. I am pretty sure her dad came over from Germany. Anything you can share with me would be greatly appreciated. I can share what I know about Frank's children. Thanks! I can be emailed at kcwelch@frontiernet.net if that works better for you then on here. Thank you!!

My Charlie Dettman b. Feb 22, 1832, was legally Johan Karl Freidrick Dettman, but went by Charlie. He and Carolina Louisa Christina Westphal, b. Aug 30, 1835, and at least 1 child, Anna, came to America Jun 20, 1863 from Hamburg to NY on the "Deutschland". They had a son, Johan, born 1862 in Germany, but I don't know if he lived to come to America. Their other children were Karl Charles Oscar, Mary, John Henry, John Frederick, Eliza Louisa, Lena Etta, Phoebe Frieda, Edward Karl, Lewis. With the names in common with the family you mention, I think they must be related. Would like any info you have on your Charles Henry and his family.

Sorry, no Adolphs found in the family. Remember, Dettman can be spelled lots of different ways, as shown by all the variations I have found in my family alone...I,E,Y interchangable, and double and single T and N. A double N is often used by ethnic Germans, but not always.

Dettman, Chicago IL

Hi. I'm looking for my Dettman relatives. What I have been able to piece together so far: my paternal Aunt Maude
"Mattie" (maiden surname believed to be Dryden) married a Dettman (possibly Adolph). They lived in Chicago IL in the 1930s. Maude had a sister who married a Frank J. Burke, and I know they had at least two daughters (one is Helen Louise [nee Burke] Arnolds). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PHOTO: L-R foreground: Burke girl (Mattie's niece, floral dress, white bolero jacket, beret); Burke girl (Mattie's niece, while sleeveless dress and white hat); unknown female in striped dress. L-R background: Mattie Dettman (print dress, dark hat); Eugene McSweeney (my granddad); Lizzie McSweeney (my great-grandaunt, tallest in group); unknown older female (light clothing). Date Taken: 26 AUG 1931; Place Taken: Chicago, IL

I have a silver-toned pocket watch engraved "From Maude to Eugene 1912". I believe this might be the Maude who gave the pocket watch to my granddad Eugene when he was 8 years old (I inherited the watch from my Dad).
Hi! I'm looking for my Dettman relatives from Chicago. I believe my aunt Maude "Mattie" (nee Dryden) Dettman married an Adolph. I have no other searchable info on the Dettmans than this tiny bit, and that their were Burke and McSweeney relatives through their Dryden connections. Any Adolph in your family tree? I have photos of Maude from 1931. Thanks for any help you can give me. Kati McSweeney celticmc@gmail.com

I have aquired a photo of Lillian taken about 1915 with the family information typed on a sheet attached to the back. I would like to pass it on to a family member if they can be located. I am some what familiar with Walworth Co., Wisconsin as I spent the first 43 years of my life in Winnebago Co. Illinois. I could not find a STEBBE board so I decided to post on the DETTMAN board.

Ray Lightfoot
lghtfthm@aol.com

If your Great Aunt Edith was a Toph, we are related. She is my Great Grandmother. There is Joe Harper Toph in the tree, and Bert (not Pert--but old handwriting is difficult). There are at least two Berts. One went to South Dakota. I have a tremendous amount of information--some of it handed down in the family, some from the web. The Toph family was in Ripley County, Indiana in the mid 1800's, then a branch migrated to Danville, IL, then on to Urbana and Decatur. Do get in touch. I may even have a photo of your g-g grandmother, depending on your branch.
Careen Jennings

My grandfather was christened Carl Heinrich Dettmann. He was born in Hull but his father Hermann Dettmann arrived here from Hannover area by boat and settled here. His father was Carl Dettmann who was a policeman in Hannover area, possibly Mecklenburg.
So, maybe his brother or cousin was your ancestor who carried on to settle in USA? That would make you & I related!
Any info appreciated. Laurence.

I'm not sure, they're probably related some way, but my Dettmans were in Northern Illinois, Sterling/Rock Falls area. If I run upon a Mary, I'll let you know.

I do not know anything about Henry or Anna, but I am tracking Mary Dettman, mother of Joseph Toph. Mary would have been born in the late 1800s, and Joseph died in the 1960s or thereabouts. They lived in central Illinois. Joseph had no children, so that tree ends with him, but since he married a distant cousin of mine, I have a box of old photos. I mean old. Some are from Sweden. The most recent is of Aunt Emma Dettman Peterson, May, 1958. She is an old woman. There is also a boy, Harry Grey, photo apparently from the 1950s.
If any of this seems to relate to your ancestors, write back. I'm new at both the internet and research. I wonder if any of this will "work."

BINGO!!!!
Just talked with my mother about your reply. My mothers name is Helen, her father was Henry John Dettman. His father was Frank Dettman and he married Mary Jacobs. His brother was your Henry Dettman. The two Dettman brothers married two Jacobs sisters. My mother and my aunt Marjorie said that is their Uncle Henry. So we have a connection.
Next question, can we exchange e-mails and go from there. I do have some info on the Dettmans and my cousin in St. Louis has a lot more on the Dettmans. I think she even has a picture of Frank & Henry Dettman ( the first ones. Did your Henry have a son that he named Frank?
Any way let me know your thoughts on exchanging info and addresses.

I AM INTERESTED IN FINDING ANY INFO ON JOHN FREDERICK DETTMAN born in Germanyin1819,married Dorah Coban and had a daughter,Sophie, they then moved to Port Hope ,Ont.Canada.I have the family history from this point. It seems they moved to Kinmount, ont.where there were already Dettmans (unrelated) living. To avoid confusion John changed his name to Dudman. This however caused confusion for us when researching our history. We would be appreciative of any further information .Thankyou
