Possible Devane connection?

I have a possible Devane connection. My grandaunt has my ggg grandmother listed as Sarah Francis Devain. According to census records Sarah was born Aug 1879 in GA, but she was very likely older than that.

I do know that Sarah married Tom Williford in 1891. They had children Joseph, Cora, Ella, Thomas, Ruth, and Sam (that I've found).

Can anyone help with this?

FYI- go to www.berriencountyga.com and click on Families. It will take you to groupings of photo albums that have the snaps of Devanes who settled in Berrien. Look in the Parrish family album & you'll see some of the Devanes who married in....have fun. Berrien Cty & the families did a fabulous job making albumns up.

Hopefully this address will give you the link ( it is actually a transcrition of the Bible page, not a copy of the Bible.
http://digital.ncdr.gov/cdm4/document.php?(

Now- if that doesn't get you there, go to "NC State Archives", select "North Carolina Digital Records", select "Online Projects" select Family Collections and then "Bibles". Look for a collection by the NC DAR, Book A 1732-1937. There may be a shorter wasy-I tend to go the long way round.
If all else fails, post your email here and I'll email the page to you.
Thank you for the information. You never know with the Devane crowd-info pops up in unexpected places at times. Maybe there is a second Bible somewhere that had the info for the women...who knows....once again, thank you. Certainly the numbers make more sense than what I had seen.

The Bible pages I saw from NC digital library were interesting in that they give Thos Sr. date of death as 1760-but his will is dated something like 1765...most likely a transcription error but given that a DAR chpt transcribed it, they may not chg their minds on the correctness.
from records of Tara Barrett, Thomas Devane sr and Margaret Devane born c 1704; no stated source but probably deduced from birth of oldest dau Margaret 1727. I'm not sure the source of Margaret's 1727 bdate.
I've never figured why Thomas Devane sr wife Margaret's bdate was not in his bible.
Gene - this is not on topic (exactly) but you seem to have a handle on the Devanes. I was looking at the NC Online Archives and I am now confused by the Devane Bible 1700-1898. It had a listing of Thos Devane Sr (1700-1760); Thos Devane Jr (1725-1780) John Devane (1740-1791) & Thos Devane (1762-1831) & his wife Nellie H. Stewart- with a listing of kids. So, is the Thomas Devane of 1700 the one alleged to have been married to DeConde?

Mary-I saw your note & was curious-when you say John Thomas Devane, do you mean the one born in 1810 to William and Olive Hollaway Devane? I have been trying to find documentation that William & Olive are, in fact, John Thomas' parents. Does the Polk Cty Historical Society have docs? Is there still a Devane Family reunion in Berrian Cty every year? Thanks for your time, Deborah Clayton

I am now hopelessly confused about the Devanes. Bible transcription is in NC Digital Collection and has as follows: 1700-1760 Thos Devane Sr.
1725-1780 Thos Devane Jr
1740-1791 John Devane
1762 July 15 to 27 July 1831 Thos Devane & his wife Nellie H. Stewart (1771-1845)

Thos. Devane Sr- this isn't the one alleged to have been married to Margaret Conde, is it? If not, is there another Thomas before him? Someone pls enlighten me.
I recently found this deed in Bladen County Deed Book 11, p. 207: On 11/28/1822, Francis Davis, Wm. Davis, Benjamin Evans and Mary his wife, Benjamin R. Devane and Ann his wife and Ann Julia Harves [widow of John DeVane] to Richard Parish, for $150, 100 acres near Black Rivedr on and in Mears Swamp being half of a 200 acre tract granted to Joseph Howard, Sr. which said 100 acres was allotted to F. Davis and his wife Tabitha Davis at the division of John Devane, Sr. between his heirs. Wit: Nathan Byrd, Richard C. Parish. Private examination of Mary Evans and Ann Devane taken before Geo. W. Bannerman and Wm. H. Beatty, Esq...Feb. Term 1823. A. McDowell, Clerk.

My interest in the DeVane's is the Corbett family and, indirectly, the Davis family.

Just a quick response on Thomas Devaughan & Margaret Sullivant. I started researching over the last few days & realized that I was looking at 2 completely different couples. Thomas DeVaughan was born in Fairfax,VA in 1705. He moved to Bath/Beaufort, NC.I don't know where Margaret was born, but I know that the father, Darby Sullivant, married 3 times & that Margaret had a sister, Mary, who married James Lee. It is incredibly ironic that the families are so intermingled. The fact is there is substantial documentation on each family member & spouse, beginning with Thomas DeVane,Sr & Margaret de Conde's children to present. The actual dates are the only dark grey area.Anyway,Thanks for the platform. Bill

I see that it has been a few years since this post and wonder if you are still answering emails. I seem to be an ancestor of Thomas DeVane. Alice Jane DeVane, daughter of John DeVane and Ann Larkins, who married Junius Bludworth (Bloodworth) was my 3rd great Grandmother.

Don May
may.d@comcast.net

Well thank you! I've corresponded with Gene a bit too. I think it's pretty clear from the record that he referenced that Darby Sullivan is Margaret and Mary's father. Still not sure of where he came from, but maybe we'll figure it out. Changing focus to the Devanes, if anyone has any documentation or information on where Thomas Devane came from and who his parents were I would LOVE to know about it. Seems like he came out of nowhere.

Take a look at Geneaology.com forum, look in forum for Devane for a post by Elizabeth Meyer dated 2/17/2011. She has a pretty gd argument that Darby Sullivan was Margaret's father

Looking for info on Jerushia Parrish 1773-1857. Everything I have is hearsay, but corraborated from several sources, still looking for harder evidence. Have her father as RS Henry Parrish 1740-1800, her mother as Mary Ann Monk 1750-1801, her husband as RS William Monk 1763- 1825. Have both Mary Ann and William being fathered by Malon Monk and have Mary Ann with a brother William. I've seen various spellings for Malon as well as Jerushia (and Mary and William being very popular names) and am trying to determine whether Jerushia did marry her uncle. Hadn't seen the Dixon surname associated before now.

I believe I confused some with my previous post. The plantation inherited by Margaret Sullivan(t) Devaughan and sister Mary Sullivan(t) Lee from their father Darby Sullivan(t) was in Hyde Precinct which has essentially remained in the same location to present. New Hanover Co was actually in Albemarle, Clarendon, Bath, Archdale, and Craven Co at different times but no where close to Hyde Precinct(Co). The property was on Severn Creek(now Pamtego) north of Hyde Co in Beaufort Co. In 1726 (and 1720) Thomas Devaughan and brother-n-law David Lee both sold their properties and went to New Hanover Co and got patents mostly on Black River.
