Re: Patrick Devaney

These Devaneys are my Devaneys too! Patrick's older brother, Thomas is my g-g-grandfather. I also have pictures of Patrick and newspaper articles about him and his service in the Civil War. Here is his obituary notice that was posted in the Cascade, IA newspaper.

The death of Thomas Devaney who passed away at his home in East Cascade at 5 o’clock a.m. Thursday July 18, removes the last survivor of a notable party of pioneer emigrants who came to Iowa across the wilds of the northwest seventy-four years ago.

Born in London, England, December 5, 1829, at the age of three years Thomas Devaney was brought by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Devaney to Lord Selkirk’s Settlement on the Red River of the North country, now known as Manitoba, settling near the present site of Winnipeg. The colonizer had brought a great company to that wild section as early as 1816 and they were comprised of Scotch, Irish, and English people. Lawrence Devaney entered the services of Hudson Bay Company.

Along in 1838 the Scotch Presbyterians and Catholics became dissatisfied with the conditions in the settlement in which there seemed to have been a preponderance of established church influence, and many of them decided to leave. In the early spring of 1838, as soon as the grass began to spring up, the families of Donald Sutherland, John Sutherland, Ebenezer Sutherland, Angus Sinclair, Donald Sutherland, and Lawrence Devaney, departed from the Red River country, their ultimate objective point being the lead-mine country around Dubuque and Galena, of which they had heard, and for three or four months traveled across the great wilderness. Their route lay through the lands of hostile Indians. Their suffering and privations were many, and to add to their discomfort the Indian guide upon whom they depended, lost the trail in the country that is now known as Minnesota, and for days the little colony wandered in a circle in the wilderness. From the time they left the Red River of the North until they arrived in the more thickly settled districts of this section they did not see a white man outside of their own party. Their means of transportation was with oxcarts, although most of the hard pioneers walked the great distance, over one thousand miles.

Thomas Devaney was a boy of nine years of age, and there were many other children among the other families. These children of the emigrant trails, in the years to follow, formed a close and warm friendship born of feeling made kindred by their distant recollection of the hardships sustained by their family in that noted trek across a wide unsettled domain. Of that party of voyagers, Thomas Devaney was the last survivor.

On reaching eastern Iowa late in July, 1838, the Scotch, having heard that some of their countrymen had settled some distance west of the fall of the Maquoketa river, continued their journey into the section that is now Jones county and settled at Scotch Grove.

Lawrence Devaney settled on land between Dyersville and Rockville, and the following year removed to a farm near Thompson’s Mill north of Dubuque. A few years later he removed to Washington township, Jones county.

Thomas Devaney remained with his fathers’ family until his marriage to Miss Margaret Drew, December 15, 1851. He continued his residence in Washington township, Dubuque county until 1865 when he removed to Garry Owen where he remained one year. In 1866 he settled in Whitewater township, Dubuque county, and lived their continuously until 1905 when he sold his farm and bought the Howard property in East Cascade and there spent the remainder of his days.

Mr. Devaney was a consistent Catholic in religion and a democrat in politics. He was a worthy and valued citizen. Genial in disposition he was a good companion and numbered his friends by the score. He was honored and respected by all who knew him. Mr. Devaney is survived by his wife and children: Mrs. Mary Doyle of Dubuque; Mrs. M Milan, of Kingsburg, Col.; Rena of Denver, Col.; Raymond, of Plankington, S.D.; Regina, Edward, Henry, Bertha, and Nora, of Cascade. Five children preceded him in death, Agnes and Vincent and three infants. He is also survived by his brother Patrick L. Devaney, of Cascade. The funeral was held last Saturday forenoon and Requiem High Mass was celebrated at St. Martin’s church by the Rev. L Roche. The honorary pallbearers were Thomas Boyd, James Armstrong, Montgomery Wyrick, John C. Devlin, E L Cooley and John J Finn. The active pallbearers were Edward Parker, Phil Kauder, Michael Dolphin, Thos Clancy, P.J. Conlin and Jerry Connolly.

This is connected to my family. Thomas Devaney is Patrick's brother and is my g-g-grandfather. I have some information on Patrick and Lawrence. I was just in Cascade, IA, researching the Devaney's and have copies of their obituaries and I also have a couple photos of Patrick too. I'd love to know what info you may also have on the Devaneys. Sheila Perry jpsp1@aol.com

I am searching for information concerning William Devaney, who was born on Apr. 27, 1905, possibly in Brooklyn, Kings, N.Y. He married Mary E. McMahon ( daughter of James F. McMahon and Delia Neylon ) in ca. 1927 and in 1930, they were living at 32 McDonough Street in Brooklyn, Kings, N.Y. When Mary died in 1968, they were living in Hicksville, Nassau, N.Y. I'm thinking that perhaps William and Mary were neighbors in Brooklyn before they married. Any information concerning William and Mary would be very much appreciated.
Jean Mayo

If you haven't already tried this path...might be worth exploring...the records look like they might fit....I'd suggest you contact Hounsfield Town Hall and see if there is marriage record for Patrick / Sarah in 1883+/- or possibly a death record for Sarah Brennan between 1903 and 1909.

1900 Census - Hounsfield, Jefferson Co, New York
--Patrick Brennan, Head, b Mar 1854, age 46, married 17 yrs, b NY, parents b Ireland, occ=engineer
--Sarah Brennan, wife, b Feb 1855, 45, married 17 yrs, b Ireland, to US in 1871, 1 child with 1 still alive
--Mamie E, daughter, b Nov 1884, 16 yrs, b Illinois

1910 Census - Hounsfield, Jefferson Co, New York
--Patrick Brennnan, head, age 55, 2nd marriage, married 1 yr, b New York, occ=engineer
--Emma, wife, age 55, 2nd marriage, married 1 yr, 5 children with 5 still alive, b NY

Also Found
1900 Census North Dakota - Noonan, Ramsey
Davany, Mikel, head, 1834, 65, single, b Ireland, farmer

Good luck!

Greetings from Boston....My ggrandmother was Mary Devaney
who was born in Newtownmanor, near Manorhamilton, Leitrim
and her father was a John Devaney. Mary was born about 1848
but I am guessing. She married Michael Francis Maguire in Dowra, Co. Cavan in 1875. They had six children and some
of them lived In Corry, Co. Leitrim which is just over the county border from cavan. Your post doesn't say where you
ancestors are from...so I am just throwing this out and maybe I can find a connection. Just hoping!!

Maureen Maloney

I usually Drag my mouse over the part that is not a link, highlighting it, then I right click and copy it... click on the link...when you get the error message, paste the copied part into the address bar, leaving the linked part in tact....now hit enter...should take you there...if not..do a search for the names.
Hi everyone! Im living in Ireland and trying to trace the 6th generation of my family tree. We have four generations living, complete details of the 5th generation, and only two names on the 6th generation. I have searched several locations to find a birth place without success. Reading other threads you all have some wonderful information and Im wondering where you got the older details circa 1820. The oldest date I have is 1840 Thomas Devaney, married to Kate (Catherine) Bruen 1841. His father was Martin Devaney, circa 1820 who married Helen Reddy. Im trying to locate a birth place or record of birth of either Martin or Helen. Perhaps someone may have come across this information in your searches particularly of Martin Devaney.... if anyone can help me please......many thanks. Tu2Tu.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I really welcome your suggestions and your search for me.

As it turns out Sarah, the wife of Patrick Brennan, living in Jefferson County, New York was murdered in 1908 and her daughter Mamie preceded her in death.

My Sarah "Devaney" lived in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1909 at the time of the death of her young grandson, the child of "Mamie" (Brennan) Singer. Sarah's husband Patrick had died sometime before March 1903. I do not know when he had passed.

Michael Devaney b. 1834 Ireland – Sarah Jane of ND, Sister?
Please help me verify the correct relationship between Michael Devaney, born about 1834 in Ireland, and Sarah Jane, the widow of Patrick Brennan. Michael acquired a homestead in Dakota Territory, USA in 1887. He sold a couple of lots in Crary, Ramsey, North Dakota to Sarah Jane Brennan in 1903. Three years later, in 1906 he was living in the home of Mamie (Brennan) Singer, the daughter of Sarah Jane and Patrick Brennan, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. He was reported as an uncle. My theory is that Sarah Jane is the sister of Michael Devaney. A marriage record for Mary Elizabeth “Mamie” Brennan states that she was born in New York about 1886.

Can you shed any light on this family?
Hi.

My grandfather was Martin Devaney and he was the village blacksmith in Ballynacarrigy. He died in either 1960 or 1961, at the age of 84. He had 14 children: 7 boys (Patrick, Michael, Martin, Peter, Charles, John and James) and 7 girls (Molly, Anne, Sheila, Bernadette, Theresa, Marcella and Veronica). My father was the eldest son and second eldest child. Only 6 children are still with us (I believe that all the boys and the eldest girl are now departed.)

My grandmothers name was Mary (nee Cahill). She also passed away in the 1960's although she was a good bit younger.

2 of the aunts live in the US, some in England and at least 1 in Ireland.

There are many, many grandchildren of which you and I appear to be 2.

I hope this is helpful. If there is anything else you would like to know, I will be happy to share what I know and what I don't know I will try to find for you.

By the way, my name is Pat (Patricia). And my natural hair color was red (now more grey than anything else). I'm assuming that the red in redwitch refers to your hair color.

Bye. Hope to hear from you.

Hi Mary.

It's a pleasure to meet a cousin. My father was Patrick. He died in 1968. My mother was Margaret Hester from County Mayo. My mother, father, myself and my brother, Marty, went to America in 1949. My sister, Maureen, was born in Chicago. My brother, sister and I still live in Illinois.

I do remember our grandparents. In 1956, our family spent the summer at home in Ireland. Many of my father's brothers and sisters came to visit at different times when we were there. I'm sorry I don't specifically remember your father.

My sister has our grandparents funeral cards so I'll check on the dates.

It was my sister who actually saw your posting and we decided that I would be the one to reply. I've never been on a message board before so I hope I'm doing this right. I don't know how personal I should get on a message board. However, I will share anything I know about our family. I'm going to figure out how to send you my email address and then we can converse more privately.

Our family here is rather small. My brother has 2 children and 2 grandchildren, with another on the way. My sister has 3 children (the youngest just started college) and I have a daughter.

We have one cousin in Illinois. One of our uncles lived in Connecticut and his children probably still live in the east. Two of our aunts live in New Jersey, as well as, probably, our oldest cousin. I don't know that any of our aunts or uncles went to Australia but I do know that some cousins did. Besides your father, I believe three of our aunts went to England, married there and stayed.

It is a pretty big family. I'll contact a cousin in Ireland and see if I can get more information, especially on the family in England.

You're right this is exciting.

My best,
Pat

Devaney's

Does anyone have any information on Devaney's in NC in 1820's time frame? I am looking for a lead on Washington A. Devaney, B. NC in 1826. Found on the 1880 census in Blount Co., AL. Could have been going by Aaron W. Devaney I guess
and later started using Washingto. Any help would be appreciated.
Martin Devaney - Ballynacarrigy, Ireland

Hi,

I'm searching for any descendants or relatives of Martin Devaney a blacksmith of Ballynacarrigy, Ireland who died about 1957/8. He had several children, some of whom were believed to have emigrated to America and Australia. Martin was my grandfather and I know nothing at all about him, which is sad. I would love to make contact with any of his descendants, so if you're out there please contact me. Thank you.

Hi Pat

Wow!!! I'm soooo excited - thank you so much for getting in contact with me. Yes you're right - red haired and also going grey :-))

I know absolutely nothing at all about the family - my parents divorced when I was very young so anything at all that you are willing to share with me I would be so grateful for. My father was John and all I have is the info from his marriage certificate and the little that my mother knew about his family. My older brother remembers going to Martin's funeral but couldn't remember the exact year, he thought it was around 1958-1960.

I am in UK, whereabouts are you?

Regards
Mary
