JULIA M. GABRIEL DEVEREAUX

I'm searching for Julia M. GABRIEL, born March 1890 Carroll County, IA, daughter of Joseph Peter Gabriel and Sylvia Jane Doolittle. She was 10 years old and living with her family at Monroe, WI when enumerated for the 1900 census. Her parents were living at Nevada City, Vernon County, MO when enumerated for the 1910 census, but Julia was not listed in the household. In 1910, she would have been 20 years old and probably married, but location unknown. She married Jeda DEVEREAUX sometime before 1948 and is listed as a surviving sister in her brother's 1948 obituary

Hi William (Bill?)

My name is Nancy. I do have information on Zephaniah. I had the death date for your ggrandfather, but not the place. So thank you for that information.

I have 8 children for Emerson and Emma, but only their approximate birth dates and no marriage or posterity information. Can you update me on that? For Zephaniah and Rachael, I have 12 children, and posterity information on some of those.

Zephaniah's parents were Erastus and Lucinda (15 children). Lucinda's father's name was Zephaniah Smith, so I am assuming that is where the name came from. He was married to Lydia Conant. Is she the daughter of Roger Conant and Mary Chilton that you mention in your post?

Anyway, I would be glad to exchange information with you. My e-mail is stangern@aol.com

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Nancy

Zephaniah Smith Devereaux
I am seeking interested family members who can help me flesh out my Devereaux family line. My great grandfather was Emerson Eugene Devereaux, born in Wisconsin in 1857 and died in Everett, Washington, 1937. His father was Zephaniah Smith D. born 1818 died 1882. Zephaniah was married to Rachel Larrabee. If any of these names are familiar, let me know. I would like to learn more about this part of my past. Zephaniah is a direct descendant of Mary Chilton (Mayflower) and Roger Conant (founder of Salem, Mass.)

Actually, I have gone back and checked, and I have a couple more photos that your information relates to. I have a photo labeled “Clairinda Atwater”, who I could not place before, but I guess this is my grandmother Mina’s mother, and Seymour Devereaux’s 2nd wife by your information. The picture is of Clairinda as a young woman. I also have a photo labeled “Mina Atwater”, which appears to be of a girl about the same age and vintage as Clairinda’s picture (a generation before my grandmother Mina). This makes me wonder if she could be Clairinda’s sister (?), and therefore Mina & Minnie Devereaux’s aunt.

One thing that I do not know is if there is a tie between this generation of Atwater girls and the earlier generation of David Atwater and Amanda (Daggett) Atwater.

I have now scanned those two Atwater photos and put them in my Flickr set too.
Hi there, Nancy. Thank you for the information.

I have 3 large boxes worth of old family photos and other material. I have scanned and posted some of it on my Flickr account at the following link.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/john-pa/sets/72157617547124613/

I have been concentrating on some of the oldest material that I have, but the last half-dozen or so are of Devereaux from the early 20th century. I haven’t started working on the stuff from less than 100 years ago yet, but I am sure I have plenty from then too, including my grandmother Mina and “Aunt Minnie”. When I get to that, I may need some help in identifying everyone.

My grandmother Mina is listed in our family bible as;
b. May 2, 1886 (Elmina Devereaux)
m. Myron Lynd Daggett Sr. Sept. 7, 1912
d. Feb. 7, 1950
Myron and Mina lived in the town of Ithaca, where they raised their family. She is buried in our family cemetery plot in Trumansburg, NY.

I have also just scanned and added a picture labeled “Oscar Nief”. I don’t know who spelled it that way, but I am sure that this is the husband of Minnie that you mentioned. I didn’t know who that was before now. I am also trying to track down a connection with the Horton family too. Do you know anything about them? I have lots of pictures from the 1st half of the 20th century, so there has to be a relationship somewhere.

Mina and Minnie are the only siblings that I was aware of. Mina had two children; Myron Lynd Jr. (my father) and Agnes (m. Richard Myers). The Daggett clan has several connections to the Atwater’s of Tompkins Co., but I don’t have that all sorted out yet. If you would like, feel free to contact me directly at;
John_daggett@yahoo.com
John,

I would love to see your pictures and any other information you have on this family. You may already have this information, but here is what I have. Seymour's middle name is Martin. He was born 8 Jun 1852 in either Clinton or Saginaw county Michigan. He died 1 May 1928 in Trumansburg, Tompkins Co., N. Y. He was married first to Ellen or Ella Farel, born about 1862 in Michigan. They had at least one child, James. He was married the 2nd time to Clarinda Atwater. That would be your ggrandmother. I don't have any information on her. I had your grandmother's birth date and place, but not her death date. Where did she die? She had a sister, Minnie May, born 26 Oct 1884 in Ithaca, Gratiot, Michigan, USA. She married an Oscar Neef.
I have that Mina married your grandpa 7 Sep 1912. Your father must be Myron Lynd Daggett Jr.?

In addition, I have the ancestral line of Seymour back to Jonathan Devereaux that married Sarah Smith.

Are their any other children for Seymour and Clarenda? I would love to have what you have that I don't, and would be glad to share what I have.

Have a good weekend.

Nancy

Re: Adaline Devereaux m. Moses Morton, circa 1840, Sugar Grove, Western PA

I have found the source of the early death date for Adaline in the OneWorldTree. Two out of five of the sources used in the OneWorldTree gave a death date as “AFTER October 1857.” So I guess I've learned a lesson about using the dates from OneWorldTree and pulling my hair out over it. Check it out before you even think about pulling.

Thus I conclude that Adaline died after 1910 and was born probably in 1823. This birth date is from the 1850 Census; 1870 states about 1820; 1910 US Census and Pennsylvania 1910 Miracode Index also state 1820 again.

I have chosen to go with the 1923 for several reasons. Our family records which have been kept for at least 75 years or more state that Adaline was the oldest and then Richard who is my direct ancestor was born next on March 6, 1824. This is a date that I sure of because Flora Hulda Devereaux, his daughter, was active in genealogy; I even have a copy of one of the letters she received during the 1930's that was about exchanging information about the descendants of another family line.

Since Richard was born in 1824 then Adaline who was older must have been born in 1823 or earlier. Another reason is that it appears to be the favored date among genealogist.

If anyone have different opions about this please add to this thread.
Please be aware that not all the information on these pages in researched other than by information found on Ancestry.com. I try to find at least one census record to link each child to their parent. Of course, this works only back to 1850. As far as the Devereaux line I have then relied on the Devereaux Genealogy.

Hi,

I am looking for more information on the Moses Morton-Adaline Devereaux family. One problem I have is that I have seen many times a death date given for Adaline given some time in the 1800's but yet we have a reunion picture which has my grandmother and great aunt in it and they both identified Adaline in it circa 1970's. (See my Schram Family Tree if you wish to see it.) Of course, now they are gone so I can't re-ask them about it.

Also, many people on line have added two new children to Moses and Adaline's family. I have researched Sophronia and found her in the census and am satisfied that she is a member of the family and was missed in the "Genealogy of the Family of Jonathan Devereaux" but Elija Morton still remains a mystery. Does anyone know if he died early in life? Or anything else about him?

The picture of their son, Ernest Morton, in front of a phonograph is also on my pages which may of interest to someone. I try to get as many pictures on line as I can to share with the community but it takes time. If you have time could you look at the original picture which is the source of the pictures of Adaline and many of the other pictures on my pages of the Devereaux and related families? If would be helpful to everyone if you could check out the large picture labeled something like 1910 Devereaux Reunion (which is on Adaline’s page) for members of your family if you belong to the Richard Devereaux family or his father’s Elisha larger family. You never who will show up to a family reunion. If you would like a larger version of the picture please e-mail me at jodieschram@yahoo.com.

I also believe this reunion took place at Moses Morton house or his resort. Does any one know where that was? The people who we have identified are listed in the notes.

Thanks for any help.

Hi All,
I am doing research into the history of the Southern Arirondack region of New York State and need to find information about the life history of Henry Devereaux, B. 2/10/1797 in Williston, Vt, D. 1/16/1876, Herkimer Co, NY. His father was John Devereaux and mother Mary Winslow. His wife was Sabrina Gardner. He was a prominent lumberman in the 1840's in this area and I am hoping that there may be a family history somewhere that will bring to light some of his activities. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Dave
photoguy@nycap.rr.com

Thanks for the information. I was just beginning to study the Devereaux line.

Jonathan Devereaux b. 1716, CT had a daughter named Hannah who married Philo Hooper. I think that Philo and Hannah Hooper were the parents of my gg grandmother, K/Catharine Hooper Allyn of Massachusetts, Cayuga County, NY and Posey County, IN. She was the wife of Abijah Allyn.

Hi Nancy, thanks for getting back to me. I had a thought. Even though his name was spelled Marquis, he went by Marcus, or Mark. My grandfather, Mark Devereaux, was named for him. So, given that census takers often wrote down names as they sounded, maybe he would be in a census as Mark Devereaux? Let me know what you think, Thanks, Lora

I've been researching MLD's history and parentage for at least 15 years, and could never find anything out. If you are able to find the answers, then there are a lot of us MLD researchers from the various family lines who will be eternally grateful! Thank you, and hope to hear from you soon.

I am trying to locate ANY information regarding the parents of William L. Devereaux (b.1888) Washington,D.C. The only information I have is that his father died and he was placed in an orphanage at an older age, maybe between 8 and 12 years of age. The only information for his mother is that she was born in Ireland, was tall and had red hair. He had a brother or half brother by the name of Edward William or Williams who served in WWI. Edward lived with William and his wife Grace Wessaw in Margate, New Jersey in 1920. There was also a brother or half brother by the name of Edward Rogers who lived in California, either Covina or Canoga Park? in the late 1950's & 1960's I do know that his mother remarried after she left him at an orphanage. I have information on the Wessaw's, Thurlows, and Devereaux's, If I can help someone else.

The Adaline Devereaux from Warren County PA was a daughter of Elisha (Jr.) and Huldah Ellis Devereaux. She married Moses Morton, and, as far as I can tell, is unrelated to the Adaline Devereaux buried in Texas.
This is not the same Adaline. The Adaline Devereaux from Warren County PA is a daughter of Elisha, brother to Lora's Enoch. She is the sister of my gg-grandmother. At the moment I can't remember her married name, but I will find that for you over the next day or so and post that information.

Was Devereaux his name at birth or was he adopted by this family? I am part of a branch of the Devereaux line that is from Warren County PA and Chautauqua County NY, so I might have some helpful information if I can get something more to hook it on to.

Lora -

Was your ancestor born in 1883 or 1833? When I looked on World Connect, there is a Marquis Lafayette Devereaux married to the woman you named, but his date of birth was 2/13/1833. If that is the same person, and he really was born in 1833, then I think he might be the son of Enoch Devereaux and Abilgail Ellis. They had a son named Marcus who was born "about 1831", which isn't that far off from 1833, in Chautauqua County. Let me see what else I can figure out, but please let me know which is the correct year for his birth.

Thanks.

Nancy

Lora -

I am working on figuring out a couple of things. I need to e-mail a cousin who might have some thoughts.

I'll be in touch in a couple of days.

Nancy
