This is totally amazing! I've spent years trying to work all this out and it seems you know what happened. Alexander, the father of William Francis was a ship steward acording to Williams marrage licence. That was where i found out about Augusta Trallis.

I'd love to know actually who you were related to, I was trying to figure it out, would that make your father Mary Grimes's cousin?

Harry did go blind, he was living the end of his life with a blind woman in Ayr. I'd love to tell you more about him if you are interested.

I'd like to know about the carehome, all we knew was they were kept in a house with a balcony looking out to sea, a woman brought theeir food every day and they had classes in the room, but weren't alowed to leave. Ever week on a Friday the woman would come in drunk, and one Friday, when she came in to bring in their food they knocked her out and stowed away on a ship going to Scotland.

We were a bit confused about who that actually happened to, my Granny said it happened to William Patrick, the brother of Francis Alexander, Henry John (nicknamed Harry), their father William Francis and Mary Grimes. But in the story there are only two boys who escaped together on the ship back to Scotland. Where was Harry at the time? And why is it William Francis and Mary Grimes didn't die in Scotland?

Can't wait to hear from you again!

hello, im now looking for a man whose birth cert named him francis alexander devereux, but on census's he was called alexander devereux, so i asume he was known by his middle name.

he was born in scotalnd 1884 to mary grimes and william devereux, and at some time moved to ontario, canada. where he built a thriving business empire, had 3 sons, i dont know what happened to his wife,

when my grangmother, her sisters and their mother went to live with him for a time he didnt have a wife living with him. all i know is they had a very large house, but i dont know what the business was.

if you are a direct desendant of alexander eg you are his son, or his sons son etc, i would like you to carry out one of these genetic marker testings, i will pay, i want to know where the male line came from as i can only trace them to scotland, before that they were abroad

basically there were so few devereux in scotalnd at that time if you have a granfather or some other such that fits the bill its you

thanks for your help

Re: John Devereux of Wexford, Ireland

Hi, Susan...I'm your 2nd cousin from Honolulu, Marvin Devereux. 2nd son of John Wm. Devereux, MD and Dorothy Louise Nelson. Older brother John Jr., sister Diane and younger brother Fred. I remember you as a young girl. Your dad was my dad's cousin who was raised with his brother Roy by my grandfather, William Everett Devereux and Florence Amy Devereux. They both married sisters, Agnes and your mother Lena. I remember them well, having last seen your parents when they lived on the island of Hawaii. My partner (49 years now) Bill and I had a home then up at the Volcano Golf Course.

On another report from "gamlavasa" he/she says that her John Devereux was born 1756 in Wexford and died 1802 in Ft. Bragg. Our (yours and mine) John Devereux was born 1850 in Wexford and died 1922 in Wexford. If both died in Ft. Bragg but were born a generation apart in Wexford, who is the father of our 1850 JD?

I just sent a note to "gamlavasa" to see if she can close this gap. Bill and I are off on our first visit to Ireland on 9/30 and I'm hoping to see if "gamlavasa" can help.

What info I get I will share with you. My address:
Marv Devereux & Bill Prange, Jr.
5119 Pawnee Drive, Roeland Park, KS 66205
pH: 913-544-2346; E-mail: BillnMarv@kc.rr.com

Aloha...

Your John Devereux:
b. 1756 in Wexford; d. 1802 in Ft. Bragg, CA
My John Devereux:
b. 1850 in Wexford; d. 1922 in Ft. Bragg, CA
Somehow, as both seem a generation apart and both died in Ft. Bragg, CA...there has to be a connection. I'm wanting to know who in Wexford fathered John D. born in 1850.

Any insight you might have would be most welcomed.

I am the son of John Wm. Devereux, MD born in Ft. Bragg, son of William Everett Devereux and Florence Amy Roe while they were on a family visit from Hawaii. Dad died in Honolulu in 1968 at age 60. I have an older brother, John Wm. Jr. (Roseburg, OR), sister named Dorothy Diane Devereux Ackerson (Honolulu) and younger brother Fred of Hillsboro, OR. I am single...no children. John has 2 daughters and 1 son, Diane has 1 daughter, Fred has 2 sons.

Thanks, Marv D.

Hello,
It was a surprise to get your message. You will be a cousin of my wife's. I'm glad there are other people who don't accept the conventional family history as it appears in so many places.

I am positive that John the emigrant was not the son of Walter and Elizabeth. I'd be pleased to send you a big document about the Devereux family that I prepared in an unsuccessful effort to link John the emigrant to the large and distinguished family scattered over centuries in Hereford, Leics, Northants, Suffolk and environs. I think there is a connection to them, but it does not go through any of the famous or infamous Devereux (and there were several of the latter); it's more likely through a cadet branch . It has eluded me despite a huge effort so far. email me direct at shpcount@earthlink.net
Best,
Quentin_Shepherd

Hi Quentin,

I too am seeking information on the TRUE parentage of the John Devereux who came to Massachusetts in 1630? His daughter Hannah married Richard Knott and gave birth to Eleanor Knott, who in turned married Thomas Martin. All are my ancestors. I've scanned the Internet looking for John's parentage -- it would be delightful to find that he was the son of Sir Walter -- however, I've been led to the Plantagenets three times now through false information, and I'm interested in accuracy. I've seen your name in a few places, and ask that you let me know if you find anything definitive. (I'll do the same). Yourpost indicating the John who was born to Walter was born in 1626 makes that lineage seem doubtful. I wonder if there are proven ancestors of Sir Walter who'd be willing to donate DNA so we could get closer to an answer?

Seeking information on the families of my Grt Grandparents William Devereux and Mary Jane Breen. William was a Quartermaster onboard the Fishguard/Wexford ferries, Mary Jane was housewife and mother to 10 Children. I have stalled in my research on both the Devereux and the Breen side and would be very appreciative of any information.

Happy to share information also, such as I have.

Stewart Nolan

Hello,
You were very helpful to me last year in searching for the record of a baptism of John Devereux. You did not find it at the church. I did find that record through the Northamptonshire Record Office, courtesy of Ms Eleanor Winyard. She wrote me in August 2009 "The Record Office holds the original earliest parish register for Preston Capes and also a transcript of it. This includes an entry for the baptism of John Devereux on 27th April 1626 son of the right worshipful Sir Walter Devereux." I apologize for not having updated you earlier about this record. Keep up the good work.
Quentin Shepherd

Thank you for your interest. There are so many variant spellings! I had not come upon Durose and Dewrose, but Deverose and Deverox are not uncommon. There's a lot we might share to see whether there there is a tie-in. Let's do it off-list, however, as the mesages may get pretty big. I know a keen Devereux researcher in Herefordshire who might like to get involved too; she has been working on the family for years. Look forward to hearing from you.
Stephen Shafer

sqs1@columbia.edu

The 1626 baptism entry for John DEVERAUX (note slightly different spelling of surname) is not "new" - no additions have been made to the database since the person who put it online left the village well over ten years ago.

I still stand by my previous comment that there was no such entry in the Preston Capes baptism registers (perhaps the information was taken from a Bishop's Transcript?) but would be happy to recheck when I next visit the library.

Penny

Hi

I came across the thread about John Devereux whilst looking for a connection of this family to the S Northampton area.

I noticed that the baptism of John Devereux has been included now in the Preston Capes database.

I'm interested in a family called Durose which shares some spelling variants with the name Devereux. A group of individuals with the name Dewrose appear in the mid 1500's in Thorpe Mandeville which is a few miles to the south of preson capesa nd may be connected. I have quite a lot of source material about the Devereux families and would be very happy to share info.

Terry Haslam-Jones
Rossendale
Lancashire

Most of them are related to Hugh, like Bessie, Ablett William DEVEREUX, Maud Mabel DEVEREUX
We all found them. Our problem is to find when Hugh passiful Devereux arrived in Canada?? and from which shire he is from??? Maybe we could find relatives that way. I would love to find someone related to that family. We know that Hugh had my husband's grandfather in 1910. He left his wife. At that time he was using the name Mack. We also know that's is real name because his mother was Mary-Ann Devereux. After that he went to WW1 under the name Devereux. we know he came back but never heard from him after.

Hello, Penny
1000 thanks for your help. I am still in the dark about John, but having his baptism ruled out for Preston Capes and for Fawsley in 1626 is a help. I'll try again with the message board in Worcestershire, see if he was baptized at or near Leigh where his father and mother (Elizabeth Knightley) had a residence. I can't remember if I messaged Worcs already and got no response.

Thanks too for the discovery of the other Devereux to Knightley connections. For now I will have to focus on trying to trace the parents of the John who emigrated to Massachusetts in 1630. I don't think any longer that he was the son of Walter and Elizabeth, but that puts me in a lonely minority of American Devereux searchers.

If you ever have a question about Ulster County, New York please let me know. Just yesterday, while weeding in an old cemetery I saw the stone of a man named Simmons who had been born, the stone said, in Stafford. About 20 families came from England to my town, Saugerties, to work in a very advanced iron mill that opened 1828 , and Simmons was probably one of them.
Best, Quentin

Hi Quentin ...

Had some trouble finding your thread - it seems to have been moved from the Northamptonshire board!

I got to the library this morning and searched the Preston Capes baptisms (difficult but not impossible to read!). I can categorically state that there was no baptism for John DEVEREUX in 1626, and also checked 1625 and 1627 and am fairly certain there's nothing there either - which probably explains why he doesn't appear on the PC website.

I also checked the Fawsley baptisms for 1626, but he's not there either.

So ... goodness knows where his "Preston Capes baptism" originated!!!

I'm not sure what these findings mean for you - perhaps your John is the 1615 one from Rattlesdon???

I amused myself by having a hunt around on Google and was interested to see that there are quite a few instances of a connection between the KNIGHTLEY and DEVEREUX names, eg. a Devereux KNIGHTLEY "of Fawsley" (1619-1681) who was the son of Richard KNIGHTLEY and whose maternal grandmother was a DEVEREUX (his portrait comes up on the National Portrait Gallery website). Also, from the Visitations of Worcestershire 1634, a Thomas Knightley DEVEREUX. Do any of these have a connection to you?

Penny

**John Devereux

Hello, can anyone help me to confirm the baptism of this child? Using the IGI citations (which are generally helpful but often hold mistakes) plus other sources I believe him to have been the child of Walter Devereux and Elizabeth Knightley. I believe the couple were living at the time at Leigh Court, Leigh Worcs although they had residences elsewhere.

The International Genealogical Index has John born to these parents at Leigh Court "Warwickshire" [has to be a transciber's mistake for Worcs ] on April 27 1626 and baptized the same day at Preston Capes Northamptonshire. Even if Preston Capes were not many miles away it makes no sense for a living child to be baptized on the day of birth; there must be a mistake in one of the two dates. The birth date is more likely to be a mistake than the baptism date.

I'm hoping that the beautiful church in Preston Capes, St. Peter's and St Paul's, has a viewable register of baptisms that someone could ever so kindly look at or that the register has been filmed or digitized and can be examined on the web, perhaps for a fee.

It is quite believable that this child would have been brought to Preston Capes for christening, as his mother's father's family, the Knightleys, lived there and near there.

This baptismal record if it could be found would be immensely helpful in my family search. It would actually rule out connection that I hoped was valid, but that's better than barking up the wrong tree.

Thank you,
Quentin_Shepherd
United States

It does seem unlikely that the child would have been taken a large distance on the same day but it's possible. His mother could have stayed behind to recover!

I noticed another rootsweb contact had offered to check the register and that should clarify things for you. IGI is great but is often wrong or misleading. If you don't get the entry in a while you could email Northants Record Office, give them the place and date and they might look up the original register and check it for you.

good luck
Stephen

Hello, Penny
So nice of you to reply thus. I did look at the Preston Capes web site (a very handsome one) and like you found no Devereux. That name would be a transient in Preston Capes. Knightleys should, however, abound. I surmise that this baby was taken to the home of his Knightley relatives for the baptism, and hope against hope that the Church of St Peter and St Paul was the scene of that ceremony.

John Devereux appears often in ancestry.com, usually with the improbable birth location of Rattlesden Sussex. I think that is a mistake for Suffolk that has been perpetuated. There is a John Devereux in the International Genealogical Index christened in Rattlesden 1 March 1614. In my opinion he is more likely to have emigrated in 1630 than the John Devereux who was born to Walter and Elizabeth in the year 1626 or so I believe. The John baptized at Rattlesden did not have Walter and Elizabeth for parents; he had Peter and "Julian"
I eagerly await what you find.
Best,
Quentin

That is most helpful to know. But in this case, would the parents really have taken the child more than 40 miles for the ceremony? That is the distance between the two places, am I right? Much obliged,
Quentin

Hi Quentin ...

A huge amount of parish register information is now online at the Preston Capes website - http://www.prestoncapes.org.uk/history/genealogy/index.php - which may be of interest to you. Unfortunately, no listings for DEVEREUX.

However, I have access to PC parish register fiches at my local library (although not sure whether they go back to the 1600s). They are going to be hard to read (they're scans of the original registers, not transcripts!) but as we have the actual date, I'll give it a go, hopefully some time next week.

I had a search around on the Ancestry family trees, and was interested to see that John DEVEREUX (s. Walter and Elizabeth, and who died in Marblehead, Mass. in 1695) is usually recorded as being born in 1614/1615 in Sussex (Rattlesden) or Suffolk. Is this the same chap?

Penny

Hi, I am not able to help look up the register you need but it might help you to know that it was quite common for children to be born and baptized on the same day. This was not unusual.

regards
Stephen
