Thank you for posting this transcript. It seems to fit with the information on the ARW Pension Declaration for James Divin of Lincoln Co. KY (S16365). Joseph Hall was a witness for his declaration. What is the citation for the transcript (repository, book, page number)? There seems to be a connection between James Divin, the Hall family, Duncan Family, and Barnett family as they supported each other for wills and ARW pensions.

My great great grandmother Mason was Jane Clark, who was born 12 Oct. 1831 in Donegal, Ireland. Her marriage certificate says that her parenets were John Clark, labourer and Mary Devin/Devlin. She had been married before she married William Mason in 1855 in the area of the city of Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland. She had 3 children and died at a young age.

I would like to find out more about her parents and siblings. Anyone researching this family, knowing any more information than this, or researching these names in that area who could shed some light on these people, please contact me, Janet Isobelle Finney directly at:
jifjc@primus.ca
OR
jif137@hotmail.com
My Murphy records begin with Owen Murphy who was born around 1800 and farmed in the town of Cloghfin in Eglish parish, which is righ next to Clonfeacle parish. Do you have any info about a James that may have gone to Australia or New Zealand between1850-1864.He may also have a sister called Betty?
Re: DEVIN vs DAVIN ?

Thanks for your reply to my query. You are right, people seem to have trouble spelling and pronouncing what I think is a fairly simple name. The issue here, though, is that this Irish geneological society sent me info on baptismal records for four different siblings that had the same spelling, Davin and they were in two separate parishes. In each case the fathers name is also Davin. I previously was aware of two of the first names of that generation and the maiden name of the mother. These all match what I have found from different sources in this country which list them as Devin. I even have the naturalization papers where one signed his name as Devin.

I have written to the Tipperary Family History people and asked them if there were an explanation for the same family to be recorded as Davin, yet call themselves Devin. I did read in one of the Irish surname reference books that in Tipperary, Davin and Devin were synonyms, but I'm not quite sure just how interchangeable they were.

Again, thanks for your input and interest. I'm kind of hoping that there is an explanation so I can finally have a starting place to start reseach in Ireland

Mike Devin

There have been many variations of the Devin name, Davin is one of the common ones. Many land records in Pittsylvania County, Virginia use Davin serveral times. William Devin's ARW records use Davin, Devin, Divin, Deven, Divan, and Devine. I think it depended on who was doing the writing. Even today, how many times have you corrected someone not to put the "e" on the end?

Wade W. DEVIN

Searching for where Wade W.DEVIN died. He was born Nov. 1871 in Polk Co., MO, and is son of James DEVIN. Wade married Emma Lee McKINNEY Mar. 14, 1894 in Polk Co. They had 2 daughters, Neva L. Devin, born 1894, and Marie, born 1896. Wade and Emma divorced in Green Co., MO. in 1917, but are living together as man and wife in Kansas City, MO on the 1920 census. Daughter Neva married Archie K. SHAY in Polk Co., MO July 23, 1912, and they had 2 sons, Everett, born 1915, and Harry A., born 1919 in OK, but the family is together in 1920 in Springfield, MO. Neva and Archie divorced in Springfield in 1924.
the last mention I have of Archie is when he was at his father's funeral in 1927. No mention of Emma after 1920. No mention of Neva Shay (who took back her maiden name of Devin at her divorce) after the 1924 divorce, and no mention of Marie after the 1910 census.
A distant family member found a photo of 2 adult women, probably in their late 20's, identified as Neva and Marie, so Marie lived to adulthood. I need any info as to where any of this family ended up. One old family member thought Emma died in New York state. Thank you for any help. Judy

I am Ruth Gieseke Davis, also have Wade/Nowlin/Devin ancestors. The earliest James Nowlin and his wife Sarah Catherine Ward were from Carbon County Ireland. The earliest Devin I have is William Devin, Sr. born about 1724 in Dublin, Ireland and died April 1802 in Pittsylvania County, VA. His wife, Sarah Smith, born 20 March, 17 1727. You can get on the website:
www/geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/5172/famsheet/f0044.htm
Good luck.

Re: Patrick Devin Mary Murphy

Sorry, but as far as I can tell most of my Devines went to Philadelphia. I've searched most the surviving records in Nothern Ireland for reference to Patrick Devin and Mary Murphy and found only one in the RC church records in the Parish of Clonfeacle circa 1823. This gels with word of mouth family history which claims my family came from Moy, a cathedral town on the border of Tyrone/Armagh. I've exhausted all leads at this point and I'm considering DNA testing to drum up some possibilites. A gentleman by the name of Donn Devine has some posts on the Devine Family message board at geneology.com that suggests there may be three different clans from different parts of Ireland which have adopted the name Devine. I would suggest you check out these for possibilities.

DEVIN vs DAVIN ?

I recently wrote to one of the genealogical groups in Ireland (specifically for Tipperary County) and asked about a gggrandfather, Michael Devin. I gave them the name of his wife, Mary Dempsey and that they had at least one child, Edward, with his birthday and the fact he was born in
Drangan Parish. The information came back that there were no records of any DEVIN, but they gave me info on a Michael DAVIN who had a wife Mary DEMPSEY and a son Edward who was born in Drangan parish. The dates seem to be close and some other info seems to fit closely. This family moved to Boston mid to late 1800's but all the records are for DEVIN, Even the naturalization papers are signed by Edward DEVIN.

I did read that in this county DAVIN was synonymous with DEVIN. Has anyone some info on how this works. The records in Ireland say DAVIN, and the person, themself, uses DEVIN?
