I noticed this "Derlin" family in the Ancestry.com 1880 Philadelphia census (with your spelling correction): Hugh, 45, Ireland; Mary, 35, PA; Sarah, 15, PA; Frank, 13, PA; Hugh, 6, PA; James, 4, PA; and Harry, 1, PA.

I noticed them again in the 1900 Philadelphia census: Hugh, March 1835, immigrated 1850, Ireland; Mary, Oct 1843, married 37 years, PA; James, 24, PA; and Harry, 20, PA.

I noticed them again as "Develine" in the 1910 Philadelphia census: Hugh, 60, widow, Ireland; and Harry, 29, PA.

My guess, based on the Philadelphia death index, is that Mary died on Feb. 13, 1907, and that Hugh died on May 28, 1911. Have you determined the same, and obtained death records?

Have you located their burials in a cemetery, and have you obtained their obituaries? Hugh's obituary might give a clue to his birth place in Ireland. Perhaps you could e-mail the folks at the Philadelphia Public Library to see if they would do an obituary look-up for you.

I believe your family of Francis Devlin and Elizabeth McLaughlin looks something like this:

Children, as found on familysearch.org:

Henry Devlin, born c1853 Scotland
Thomas Devlin, born June 3, 1856 Dalry, Ayrshire, died Feb. 1, 1940 Witt, Montgomery, Illinois, spouse Isabella Curran
Francis Devlin, born Jan. 3, 1858 Dalry, Ayrshire, spouse Jane Smith
Mary Ann Devlin, born Nov. 26, 1859 Dalry, Ayrshire
Elizabeth Devlin, born Oct. 4, 1861 West Kilbride, Ayrshire
Cathrine Devlin, born March 13, 1864 Dalry, Ayrshire
Hellen Develin, born Nov. 17, 1871 Dalry, Ayrshire
Margaret Devlin, born May 25, 1877 Ayrshire, died Aug. 28, 1924 Virden, Macoupin, Illinois, spouse Charles Gaffney (there is a Thomas Gaffney who has a tree posted on GenesReunited.com with these Devlin parents in it)

Census findings, from ancestry.com:

1871 Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland census (address 18 Linn Row)
Mancil Denelyn, head, 40, ironstone miner, born Ireland
Elizee Denelyn, wife, 31, born N Kilbride, Ayrshire
Henry Denelyn, son, 17, ironstone miner, born N Kilbride, Ayrshire
Thomas Denelyn, son, 15, ironstone miner, born Dalry, Ayrshire
Francis Denelyn, son, 13, ironstone miner, born Dalry, Ayrshire
Maryanne Denelyn, dau, 11, scholar, born Dalry, Ayrshire
Elizth Denelyn, dau, 8, scholar, born Dalry, Ayrshire
Catherina Denelyn, dau, 6, scholar, born Dalry, Ayrshire

1881 Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland census (address: Stoopshill Row)
Francis Devlin, head, 48, pit bottomer, born Ireland
Elizabeth Devlin, wife, 45, born West Kilbride, Ayrshire
Mary Ann Devlin, dau, 20, wool factory worker, born Dalry, Ayrshire
Elizabeth Devlin, dau, 18, wool factory worker, born West Kilbride, Ayrshire
Catherine Devlin, dau, 16, wool factory worker, born Dalry, Ayrshire
Maggie Devlin, dau, 4, born Dalry, Ayrshire
Jane Devlin, g-dau, 11/12, born Dalry, Ayrshire

1891 Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland census (address: 21 Newton Street)
Lizza Devlin, head, 53, born West Kilbride, Ayrshire
Lizza Devlin, dau, 24, laundry maid, born West Kilbride, Ayrshire
Catherine Devlin, dau, 23, laundry maid, born Dalry, Ayrshire
Maggie Devlin, dau, 15, laundry maid, born Dalry, Ayrshire
Jane Devlin, dau, 11, scholar, born Dalry, Ayrshire

Scotland started civil registration in 1855. Their death records are very detailed. There is a pay-per-view website called scotlandspeople.gov.uk that has images of the civil records, and when I checked the indexes for a Francis Devlin who died between 1881 and 1891, I did not find one in Dalry, but I did find one in Paisley. If this is your Francis, you should find his parents on his death record.
Based on your John and Bridget Devlin living at Casey's Place in Dundalk in both the 1901 and 1911 census, perhaps this record in the Ireland death index is worth considering: John Devlin died in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1931 in Dundalk, age 64 at time of death.

John might have been rounding-off his age on the census. Are John and Bridget's ages included on their marriage record?

I was at my local LDS family history center this afternoon, and used their subscription to a newspaper website. I saw in the Thursday, October 15, 1970 edition of the Newport Daily News, both a death notice and an obituary for Howard James Devlin, Sr. The obit mentions his parents William Devlin and Charlotte Sisson, his widow Beatrice (Hazard) Devlin, his son, and a few brothers and sisters.

1880 Lincoln, Providence, Rhode Island census
Patrick Devlin, 50, boilermaker, born IRE
Margaret Devlin, 46, IRE
Eliza Devlin, 30, IRE
John Devlin, 28, IRE
Rose Ann Devlin, 20, IRE
Martha Devlin, 11, IRE
William Devlin, 15, IRE

Margaret's age is always interesting, in all the censuses.

I checked the Irish marriage indexes and found a Patrick Develin who married a Margaret Hutchison in 1849 in Drogheda, Co. Louth. This marriage seems to fit based on daughter Eliza being age 30 in the 1880 census, versus the 1900 census info "married 44 years".

The marriage was located in the IGI on familysearch.org with the different spellings:
Patrick Develin, age 25, son of John Develin, married Margaret Hutchison, age 21, daughter of James Hutchison, on July 2, 1849 in St Peters, Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland.

Irelands Valuation office conducted its first survey of property ownership in Ireland from 1848 to 1864. This survey became known as "Griffiths Valuation". Found in the index:
Patrick Devlin, Suburbs of Drogheda, Moneymore, St. Peters Parish, Co. Louth
John Devlin, Drogheda Street,(Collon), Collon Parish, Co. Louth
John Devlin, Lagavooren James's Street, St. Marys Parish, Co. Louth
James Hutchinson, West Street, Moneymore, St. Peters Parish, Co. Louth

Debora, it appears that you have started a new thread with your query, rather than "replying" to the William Devlin posting, so the poster (J. Saunders) of the William Devlin posting might not see your query.

As far as Edith's brother William Henry Devlin's burial goes, he and several other Devlin family members are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Milton, Ontario, Canada.

J. Saunders also posted on the Devlin GenForum bulletin board, and mentions that his William Devlin is buried in the St John's Anglican Cemetery in North Bay, Ontario, Canada.

hi, my direct male line goes back to Felix Devlin, abt 1852 Co Tyrone - 1921 Thornaby, Yorkshire UK. His father I believe was Edward DEVLIN 1822 Omagh - abt 1875, soldier in the 55th Foot. I did have an Ancestry DNA Y-33 test in 2009. Can I add my DNA results to your database? thank you, David Ogden

Thank you for your response. I haven't thus far found any record of "my" Thomas F. Devlin before 1870. I'll have to check out that 1870 census record to see who's living nearby.

New DEVLIN DNA surname group

Gentlemen, I am researching William Devlin, born c1805 in Omagh, Co. Tyrone, and his wife Mary Lovin. Their son Irvine Devlin, born April 15, 1829 in Omagh, came with his wife and children to Ontario, Canada.

I have gotten into Y-DNA testing, and found this to be a great genealogy tool for fellows to use while researching their paternal line. I have started up a Devlin DNA surname group through Family Tree DNA. You can check it out at: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/devlin/

There was already 16 Devlins that had tested in the Family Tree DNA project, through different surname groups and clan groups, but they did not have a Devlin home. I started the Devlin group, and my male cousin ordered a Y-DNA 37 marker test kit. Then, 2 of the other 16 Devlins in the project have joined our group.

Presently, Family Tree DNA are holding a holiday sale, and the 37 marker Y-DNA test is $119.00US. This is a great sale price for a Devlin male to take advantage of until Dec. 31st.

You can order, and pay for, a test kit on-line, the lab sends you a test kit through the post, you swab the inside of your cheek, and send the test kit back to the lab through the post. Very convenient.

Fathers pass their Y-DNA down to their sons, who pass it down to their sons, and so on. All the male Devlins in your family line would share the same Y-DNA, and all would have the same test results if they tested. This testing helps to match-up and connect family lines, where the paperwork doesn't exist, and helps us to expand our family trees, and aid in our research.

Family Tree DNA's website is at: http://www.familytreedna.com/
They now have 219,149 Y-DNA records in the project database.

Perhaps you will give this Y-DNA testing some consideration. I am available to answer any questions you might have. My Devlin tree is posted on Rootsweb.com.

Here's an interesting marriage, on Oct. 22, 1872 in Manhatten, New York City, between Thomas Devlin, son of Thomas and Ann Devlin, and Bridget Kirby, daughter of Michael Kirby and Mary Madigan.

From the New York City censuses, it appears that Bridget died between 1905-1910, and Thomas F Devlin died between 1920-1930.

Is your Thomas living with a son William, and a brother(?) John in the 1870 New York City census?

Hi,

I am looking for information about this family, Kerrine Develin or Kevin Devlin and Catherine Byrne.

Their children were:

Margaret Devlin born 1852
Patrick Devlin 1850
Joseph Devlin 1855
Ann Devlin 1857
Elizabeth Devlin 1859
Mary Devlin 1861
John Devlin 1865
Susan Devlin 1868
Peter Devlin 1871
James Devlin 1873
Thomas Devlin 1876

Margaret Devlin married John Noone, in Ashford County Wicklow on 19 June 1876.

Members of the family may have sometimes used the Develin surname.

Regards
Paul Lynch
