First of all, thank you for posting the will of Andrew Devore.

I am doing research for a Devore descendant (Andrew, Adam, Adam, William Henry) and would also be interested in a copy of this document.

I would also be interested in more information on this family if you are willing to share. Always willing to share what I have gathered.

The folks I am doing this research for are elderly and thought they would never find other Devore relatives. I assured them there were other Devore descendants out there, and I hope to find some to put them in touch with.

Thanks for all your help.

Chris Painter
Marietta, OH

Looking for Devore in Van Buren County Iowa around 1840 to 1850. My G-G-Grandmother,Hester Devore married Isaac Mathews in Van Buren County Iowa 1845. Listed below Isaac Mathews in 1847 Iowa State census was a David Devore who I believe to be either Father or an Uncle. Hester b-Ohio 1826, Father b-Pa, Mother b-Pa. Close possible connection was Benjamin Devore Athens/Ohio then Lee/Iowa in 1850 but this connection might be a Samantha Devore and not Hester Devore also same age and birth state. Any information appreciated.
quailbraker@msn.com

I have come across the Devore's of Londonderry Twp, Bedford, PA several times in my search of the Cooks who were apparently neighbors to your Devore family. I descend from John Cook (b:1808) and wife Mary Ann Wilhelm. John was first married to Elizabeth Hardin, maybe sister to Rachel Hardin who married a Devore as I recall.

My Cook pedigree:

John Cook and Mary Ann Wilhelm
James Howard Cook and Amanda Clauson
John Edward Cook and Lillian Gertrude Sturtz
Olen Viry Cook and Mary Katherine Ebersole
Evelyn LaRue Cook and Paul Dudley Jewell
Paula Jewell (me)

I'm trying to find someone who might know about my Cooks. Do you or do you know someone who might be able to help me learn about the Cooks?

Thank you,
Paula JEWELL Edens

Hello,
I am searching for information on the Jeremiah Devore family that was in Putnam Co, IN, in the late 1820's. They came to Putnam Co from Bracken Co, KY. Before that, Jeremiah was born in NJ in 1760's, where he married. He then went to VA before going to Bracken Co, KY.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Maggie

Hester Devore b-Ohio 1824-1826 M-1845 in Van Buren Cty Iowa.
Listed below Hester's family (Isaac Mathews) was a David Devore in 1847 Iowa State Census. 1880 Census she says parents from Pa. Found a good fit with Benjamin Devore Jr. family but turned out might a Symantha Devore instead? Family given name (Willis) was similar as well to Benjamin's family names. One child names William Valentine, the Valentine name might be maiden name carried on but can't associate with the 1824-1826 birth dates. Any leads would be appreciated. Thank you quailbraker@msn.com

Seeking DeVores of KY and CA bef 1920

I'm researching my husband's line that includes DeVore.

His Grandfather, Herbert DeVore, according to the 1930 Census, was b. in Kentucky, was 24 yrs. of age at time of census. He was married to Susie Elias, who was 22 yrs. of age at census.

Their children included John DeVore and Elizabeth DeVore, my husband's father and aunt, respectively. These children were born in CA, but at time of the 1930 census, the family was living in KY.

Herbert shows up apparently as the son of John B. DeVore and Lizze (maiden name unknown) in the 1920 census. John's age at time is census is unclear...34, 24 or 45. the writing is illegible. Wife is age 29, and Herbert is age 13, which would make sense if 10 years later he is married and 24 yrs.

The father of John B. DeVore is listed as b. in Indiana.
The wife of Herbert DeVore, Susie, is listed as b. in Syria. (I do not have a worldwide subscription, so cannot trace this end)
I am trying to go back past John B. DeVore, and have not been able to find further. Have found his WWI Draft Reg. card, but much of the writing is hard to see.

If this connects with what anyone else has, please let me know.
Thank you.
Liz

Re: Devores of Clay Co. IL

I am searching for information, especially place of burial & cause of death of Harlan P. Gerrish, the brother of my 3x-gr-grandfather, Henry Gerrish. Late in life Harlan P married "Mrs. Matilda Good." Through research done many years ago, I had determined that Matilda was the daughter of Seth Evans and Kittorah(?unknown)and had first been married (8 July 1850) to Jerrimiah Devore(b 1826 d 1867). On 31 August 1869 Matilda married B.F. Good(e). In the 1870 census Matilda is listed as age 40, widowed, with the following children: Walter 14, Seth 12, Ida 10, Florence 7, James 3. There had also been a son William b 17 Nov 1853 & d 15 Dec 1867, the same year his father died. There, of course, could have been older children who had already left home. On 10 Aug 1871 Matilda married Harlan P Gerrish. They had 2 children who both died young: a daughter b 1872 d 1877 and a son b June 1875 d March 1876. Matilda's dau Ida K, age 15, died 26 March 1876 and Harlan died 18 days later at the age of 57 years 10 months, a rather young age compare to others in his paternal line. I have a note in my records that Ida was buried beside her father and brother William at Foster Hill Cemetery in Flora, Clay Co, IL. To substantiate the marriage of Jeremiah and Matilda, I have a photo of the grave marker and a death certificate of their son Seth Evans Devore b 23 April 1858 b 4 Aug 1928. I also have the death certificate of "Matilda Devore" showing Seth Evans as her father. I am 99% certain that the Matilda & "Jerrymiah" buried at Foster Hill Cemetery are the parents of the children I have listed here, and I am just as sure that Matilda Evans Devore is the Matilda who married B.F. Good and later Harlan P Gerrish. In 30 years of searching, the descendants of Harlan P Gerrish have been unable to locate his resting place. It seems odd that the step-children who died about the same time that he did are buried at Foster Hill, but there is no sign of him. Other members of his family-siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews-all have marked graves (in Marion & Wabash counties)but we have never been able to locate a grave, a death certificate or a will or probate for H.P.
Has anyone researching the Devore family ever seen ANYTHING on Harlan P. Gerrish (or H.P. Gerrish) Any leads at all will be truly appreciated.

Please cotactt me.
Claude's farther was my gr-grandfathers nephew. That much I gave proved by census's.
I have his (Claude's) father, William Henry's obit & death certificate, proving his parents were Catherine Smothers & Benjamine Devore.
Like you I've not found much on the family.1860 & 1880 census is it.
William had a sister Mellisa, that married back into the Smothers line. Her obit also says the names of her parents. Neither William or Mellisa's obits name the other. 1920 obit for William names a sister Tillie (Matulda) still liing in Columbus & a brother (No name) listed as wherabouts unknown.
Beside these 3, census give the names of John & Charles.
Mellisa's obit says she moved to Seneca Co. when she was 15 with her parents (abt 1865). Yet I find them in Franklin Co. in 1860 & 1880. I have a pic of her & her husband.
Wm. is first found in Auglaise Co. before moving to Fostoria.
Other than Catherine Smother's & Benjamin Devore's marriage & the 2 census, I don't find a thing.
I have been able to follower all but one of her (Catherine's) siblings. I've found nothing out about who her parents belong to. Or where the went. Just there marriages date & a few census. We didn't find one of us willing to take a DA test, which proves we go back to Geo Nicholas Smethers/Smothers' that came into Ohio, in the early 1800's.
I'll be glad to share what I have with you. Also have pics of 2 of Cantherines yonger siblings, my gr-grandfather & a sister.
Please contact me at-loiswallace@charter.net

I have quite a bit of data regarding our relatives (see DEVORE~5 file on Ancestry.com) although I've hit a snag at James Eugene DeVore, b. AUG 1848, TN & his father. Please email me (lmkausch7@aol.com) if you have more info.
My great-grandfather's sister Margaret Brennan of Renfrew County, Ontario married Isidore Caron. She passed away in 1933 in Port Arthur, Ontario. I have a copy of her obituary in which it states that her daughter Adaline was then living in Detroit, Michigan and her married name was Mrs. Charles Devore. Given that your aunt's name was Adeline, I thought that there may well be a connection. I don't have a lot of other information, but would be glad to hear from anyone regarding this branch of my family.

Re: Matthew DEVORE-Edgefield, SC

Hey Chuck,

My family always said that there were two brothers that came to SC, but did not say from where, but my Ggrandfather (David William DeVore) would speak in another language (per my aunt) when the kids were around so they would not know what they were saying.

I also am not sure of the NY place, but there seems to be church records (Dutch Reform Church) with names and dates on them. Also, there are 2 Matthew DeVore's living in SC and a Jacob DeVore living there before 1790, on the 1790 (1792) census they are listed, and in 1772 and 1773 land plats for Matthew, and claims for Rev. War for Jacob and Matthew, if they did come by way of NY/NJ they migrated down like many other families, they came to NY an then to NJ, VA, NC, SC. We assume that they are French but the De could also come from the boarder area's of France.

I think that Matthew DeVore (the oldest one) was born abt 1710/1715 and Jacob could be his brother / son or the brother to Matthew (born abt 1750) that married Rebecca Adams, and Jacob could be the father to William DeVore whom married Elizabeth Clackler dau. of John Clackler, she is listed in her fathers Will as dau. Elizabeth DeVore, have seen Elizabeth with William DeVore as witt: to other Wills, but I do not have any documented proof of a marriage for William and Elizabeth.

Some have a Elizabeth DeVore mar. to Frederick Tillman and they have listed her as a dau. of Matthew and Rebecca and that she was born abt 1760, I don't think the date's match up and I think she might be a sister/cousin of Matthew instead of dau., This is the only daughter of Matthew and Rebecca DeVore that I have found and this family left SC and lived in LA, Martha DeVore b. 1793 mar. Jeremiah Burnett

Matthew DeVour (DeVore) had a plat next to John Kleckler (Clackler). They lived near Stevens Creek and Long Cane Creek which Stevens Creek area had quite a few German / French settlers.

Wow, I come across this four years after you searched for someone who knew the info!
James L Devore/s is my great-great grandfather. Lydia, Albert, Louis and Luvicia were all siblings. J.L Devors' father, (James William b. 1845), was married to Luvicia. So it would make sense that my g-g grandfather would write her a letter, as she is his aunt and I beleive his parent's had divorced. In Oct. 1904 my g-g grandfather was 12 years old(close to ten)! I would be interested in a copy, via Email, of this letter:) or more info. Wow?!?

I hate to tell you but I have searched everywhere for a copy for sale and no where could I find one. I did check online with the main library in Toledo Ohio and lo and behold they had a copy in their genealogy department. I went yesterday and I'll need to go back several times because it was loaded with information. If you have a good library near you with a genealogy department you might want to try them.

The title of the book is "The Devore/ De Vore Families, 1500-1992" and the ISBN is 9780917231131 and the library call number was q929.2097. Since I don't know if all books would have the same call number I'd start with the ISBN number.

Good Luck
Norma DeVore Kirian
