Branch of David Douglas Dewar of Kent, England b1820

I am researching the family of David Douglas Dewar, Superintendent of Police in Ashworth, Kent in the 1860s. His son Percival Frank emigrated to South Africa around 1900 and served as a teacher for many years, marrying Marie-Louise Klynveld (NOT Klynsmith as the internet thinks).

Another son, Charles Barling Dewar, emigrated to the USA and lived in New Jersey.

My grandmother was Percival Frank Dewar's daughter. She married Arthur Adams.

Other family of Percival Frank's children live in New Zealand.

We are interested in learning more about any family of this branch of the Dewars, or perhaps other relatives of David Douglas Deward.

Regards,
Shannon

You mention Alexander.I have visited his grave in Whitburn Cemetery, Scotland and have a photo which has some information on it. Hoping to hear from you.

Hi Catherine,

I am also looking for Dewar's in Ontario. Joseph Duwar (Dewar, Daraway, Dereway, etc.) was born in Quebec in 1823, married in Beauharnois, QB in 1856 and lived most of his adult life (1856-1900) in Ontario. I wish I could say that I had some information for you but, unfortunately, I do not. All I can do is wish you well because this is a difficult family to research! :-)
Dawna Clark

Hi, I have quite a bit of info from John and Rebecca and on -- however, I have been unable to find any info on his son John's wife Christie Campbell. I descend from their son, Alexander William Dewar who married Elizabeth (Bessie) Wall, daughter of Walter Wall and Jane Johnston. My grandfather was Hugh Lawrence Dewar, son of Alex and Bessie.

Do you have any info on Private Robert Dewar and his wife? Was he John Dewar's father or uncle???? Is there anything to confirm the relationship??

Helen Dewar. Dyer, or Dyet born Scotland about 1763 died Helen Drummond Stirlingshire 1845

My GG Grandmother was Helen Drummond born in 1800 to Alexander Drummond and Helen Dewar,Dyer (or Dyet). Helen Dewar or ? was probably born about 1763. On birth records, her name has shown as Dyer, Dyet, Dyatt and similar, but her death record does show Dyer. I thought perhaps the name could have also been Dewar, as that seemed to be a much more common name in Scotland. Also, the families travelled a good deal, and one descendent of Helen's was on the 1841 Scotland Census with a Dewar family.

I'm hoping to find out more about her parentage. I can't be sure where she was born, and have not found a marriage record for she and Alexander.

Thanks!! Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA, USA)

I am the granddaughter of Rev. William Nelson Dewar and Elsie Grace Crellin Dewar. My maternal great-grandfather was John Henry Crellin of Liverpool.

Rev. William Nelson Dewar was in fact an ordained Presbyterian minister. He and his family lived in multiple places in Missouri and Illinois throughout the 1920's and 1930's. I'd have to check exact dates with my 90 year-old mother who is Rev. Dewar's oldest daughter.

This is my first visit to this website, so I hope I am posting this correctly.

Kathy G.

Stuart, I know this is an old post but I will try and see if this will get to you.

I am descended from a John Dewar b. 1776, Blair Athol, who married a Rebecca McDonald b. 1774 in Rhode Island (parents Joseph and Christy McDonald from Perthshire).

John Dewar (my ggggrandfather) emigrated from Scotland to Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada about 1801. Apparently a Robert Dewar, a private in the 82nd Highland regiment during the American Revolution, was granted 100 acres for his service. I am uncertain whether Robert was John's father or perhaps an uncle. John and Rebecca's first born son was Alexander, then John, Joseph, Duncan, Robert etc.

Some say that John's parents are an Alexander Dewar and Peggy (Margaret) Scotland but the birth date doesn't quite fit. Death notice "John Dewar Dr. died April 1, 1862 in his 87th year, native of Perthshire Scotland. Emigrated to Barney's River in 1801."

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello Margaret! I read with interest about your Cambuskenneth family tree. I was wondering if it has a Jane(t) Dewar on it at all born 1785 in Weem? She is my gggg-granny. Unfortunately, she died in 1847 so I have no information on parentage. Her marriage entry reads that she is the daughter of Thos. Dewar, carrier, Perth. I am starting to ask if her father could be James mistranscribed. She married Alexander McGregor in 1806 in Weem. For a while they ran an inn in Perth but then moved to Moulin.

Their children's names were Catherine, Archibald, Niel, Jean, Amelia, Vere and Isabella.

Thank you for your help.

Maxine Dundas.

Hi Sandra,
I have a subscription to Scotlands People from which I was able to find several records for the Dewars. I think I have a copy of the record of George's marriage to Euphemia, as well as some census info that indicates profession. Let me dig into my papers and see what I can find. (I'm at the office right now). It's been a while since I looked at this but I don't think he was a businessman. His father was a gamekeeper and my great granddad Charles was a coal miner (at age 18!). George also signed the death record for his dad, John.
I'll see if the name Williamson pops up anywhere also. Only one of George's sisters lived to a marriageable age. Margaret died around 19, unmarried, and Isabella died in her mid fifties as a spinster. Her oldest brother, John came up from England to record the death.
Talk to you soon!
Susan

Hi Susan,
My Grandmother was Rebecca DUNCAN, 5th daughter of George & Margaret. I guess we are distantly related. Interesting, isn't it, finding relations on the other side of the world.

My next line of attack will be to try & work out why George changed his name & who sponsored him to come to Australia. He came as an assisted migrant, (I think.) I have found an insolvency case in Brisbane, (where George landed.) The only problem is that the insolvency case was before the court while George was still on the ship. The court case says WILLIAMSON & DEWAR were insolvent and the court was to decide how much the debtors would receive. I am wondering if this is my George, (only an assumption) and perhaps he was in business with WILLIAMSON, who perhaps was his sponsor. I looked into getting the papers regarding the case & it is very expensive so haven't gone down that path. I also wondered if WILLIAMSON was perhaps a relation of Georges, maybe married to one of his sisters. I will probably never know, but it is an interesting theory.
Cheers, Sandra.

Hi Susan,
Thank you for your quick reply & for all the information. I have corresponded with Trevor & Isabel, they at first wouldn't believe that George Duncan DEWAR had become George DUNCAN. I think they believe me now, it certainly took some working out but I am sure he is the one & same man. To my knowledge he never married his girlfriend, Margaret WADDLE but she took on the surname DUNCAN. (I have never been able to find a marriage certificate.) They went on to have 6 daughters. Margaret, b. 1883, Jane b. 1885, Mary, b1887, Christina, b. 1891, Rebecca, b. 1893 & Euphemia, b. 1897. I haven't been able to find out much about George's life, I think he was mainly a laborer. His "wife" Margaret was a midwife & I think held in high regard. I descend from Rebecca.
Family history is so interesting. I am grateful for any further information I can get. I love finding old photos & articles, makes the people seem more 'personal".
One again thank you so much & if I can help in any way, would be pleased to do so.
Cheers, Sannie.

Hello Sannie,
George Duncan Dewar is an interesting person. He was one of the "middle children" of John and Catherine Dewar, and one of the four who survived to adulthood. He married Euphemia Davidson and had a number of children with her before he abandoned her (at least that's the way it looks) and migrated to Australia with his girlfriend, whom he later married. It appears he started another family there and was successful in his new home. His family in Scotland had a rougher time of things.
One of his great granddaughters from family #1 is now living in New Zealand. Her name is Isobel Huggard, and her husband's name is Trevor Huggard.
My great grandfather, Charles Dewar, was the youngest son of John and Catherine. He was an orphan in his teens and left for the US around age 18.
Of John and Catherine's other surviving children, John (the oldest son) went to England and became a policeman. Isabella died in her fifties, a spinster. She worked in the Fife linen yards most of her life.
A couple of other interesting tidbits about the Dewar's. John Dewar (father of George) died when he was "struck in the head by a train". John's father, James, was the son of a successful builder in Edinburgh. He died when John was an infant, leaving the family fortune in the hands of one Charles Dewar. Charles Dewar was a former merchant marine and overall scoundrel. He squandered the family fortune and was arressted for robbing a jewelry store. He attempted to escape from jail, but was caught and transported to Australia around 1840. There the trail ends, for me.
Please check out my family tree here and let me know if you have any questions. I'd also love to hear how you and your family fit in to our tree!
Susan
I don't know what response you have had since 2007, Carol. But there is a fundamental issue in tracking DEWARs this way. We know for certain that the name comes from one area of Perthshire but several unrelated men. The word DEWAR comes from the old gaelic Deordrah meaning a follower or wanderer. There were 5 men who were the "disciples" (I guess that's a suitable word) of St Fillan around 1000 AD, and when he died, they carried on spreading his word. Their original surnames are unknown. They all were known as his followers and over the centuries the name was spelled as Jore, Deor, Deoir and Dewar and likely 100 other variations. But the heads of those family trees were not related (except perhaps hypothetically because of some extended family of unknown name in that same region of Perthshire), so their descendants are not related either. I think only 2 of those 5 have family lines that extend to today. But, whatever, that's an added confusion factor in your research.

Still looking for more info on the Dewar family. I have discovered that Jerry's father, Roderick, was born 25 June 1889 in Lincoln, Alcona, Michigan. He married Alma Lovina Bickel on 8 Feb. 1916 in Lincoln, Alcona, Michigan. Roderick's parents were Duncan Dewar(7 May 1864-1 Jan. 1934)and Mary Dewes(1827-1900). Roderick fought in WWI. He became an alcoholic(It is unknown whether his drinking is related to what he experienced during the war, or not.)He & Alma had 2 children, Jerry and his sister, who is alive and so her info is private. Jerry married Marjorie Jane Haley on 3 June 1948 in Ithaca, Gratiot, Michigan. They, in turn, had 4 daughters and one son. Does anyone have any of this info? Thanks, Ann

Greetings

I think I may have information to help you some. There is a marriage record for a Roderick Dewar and Alma L Bickel on familysearch.org. They were married Feb 18 1916 in Lincoln, Alcona, Michigan. Record should appear for you at this address: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3PV-ZZG There is a scanned image of the original record. They apparently later divorced. In the 1920 and 1930 censuses, Alma is divorced and has a Bonnie and Gerald Bickel living with her, listed as children.

Alma L (L stands for Lovina) Bickel is a distant cousin of mine, as we are both descended from Hochstetlers. She is listed in "Descendants of Jacob Hochstetler, the immigrant of 1736" (available on Google books for free, searchable scans of the original book) on page 139. Alma is listed under her father's entry, he Cyrus T Bickel, person # 758 in the book. Alma's findagrave # is 71140715. This and more on Alma's family is available on my tree at ancestry.com, if you can access trees there.

As for Roderick, I am not a blood relative of his and thus have not done anything to speak of with his tree. The marriage record I mentioned that is at familysearch. org lists his parents as Duncan Dewar and Florence Mcneill.

Hope this information is enough to get you started at least.

Mike Fisher

I am looking for info on a friend's family. She really has no information about her paternal family. All she knows is that her father was Gerald Kenneth Dewar. He was born in 1916 to Alma(maiden name unk) and Roderick Dewar. He had a sister, Bonnie, born a year before he was(approximately 1915). She knows a lot about her mother's side of the family, but her father's side is a mystery. Roderick left the family when Gerald was about 2 years old and they never saw him again. His whereabouts remain a mystery. Thanks for any help you can give us. Ann

Margaret McGladrie Dewar

Greetings
I am the great great grand daughter of Thomas McGladrie Dewar 4th generation New Zealander, since he arrived in NZ with his second wife Elizabeth. He had come to NZ after marrying Isobel Purves, then returned to find that she was living with another... (recorded in the family history). Of Alexander I know nothing. Thomas went on to have 8 of a family - further info available if required.
Regards
Glenys Bennett

I know this post is several years old but I figured I would take a gander anyhow. Have you learned anymore about Thomas Dewar & Isabella Wishart? Wishart is a family name, my maiden is Dewar. Cant seem to find any info past my GGrandfather James Dewar. My Grandfather was John Wishart Dewar, b 1903

Fife Family History - Dewar/Erskine/Wishart Names

I have been searching for family, and it seemed almost as if the Dewar family line I have just disappeared. Maybe it is just me, maybe not. I was not even sure what 'Family' we were a part of. Last night I was searching, and I ran across this website.

This is the first page.
http://fifefamilyhistorysociety.blogspot.com/

This is where I found the info.
http://www.fifefhs.org/Records/familyhistories.htm

When I saw all three names, I wanted to jump up and down I was so excited! I thought maybe some of you could use this to your benefit. I hope it helps some others, if not, I have found a wealth of info on my family right at where I was stuck!
Not sure whether it is relevant, but am researching an Agnes Dewar born around 1841 possibly in Edinburg Scotland who married James Ure around 1860 had at least two sons Alan and John. Alan married Katie Christian and died but Katie came to Australia and married John.

If you have any information you can share would appreciate it have drawn a blank wall with this.

Regards

Sue

Luke Dewar left London on December 3, 1953. He was 14 years old at the time. He sailed on the Stratheden and disembarked in Melbourne. His last address in Scotland was c/o 121 George Street, Edinburgh. He sailed under the immigration scheme for young boys I believe.
