The only thing I know for certain at this point is that US Admiral George Dewey is in our lineage somewhere.

Dewey Bullitt Surbaugh

Seeking Dewey Bullitt Surbaugh or relative of this man.

This man is the last known relative of the Egbert Dewey family of Michigan. I have done a comprehensive study of Mr. Dewey's descendants and would like to share the info with an living relative and perhaps seek additional information to complete the study.

The Dewey Surbaugh that I am seeking is the son of Frank Surbaugh and Frances Dewey. Frances' mother was murdered when she was young while she was living in Washington. Her father was named Chester Thurston Dewey, a grandson of Egbert. The following dates and info come from a newspaper in the area:

July 23, 1937 – News article in Mt. Adams Sun – A letter received here this week from Mrs. Frances Surbaugh, who had been visiting her father and brother, CT and David Dewey, in Long Beach, CA, stated that she would return here this Monday July 26th after her father and brother leave for the South Sea islands in their yacht.

5/20/1938 – St. Adams suns reports that Mr. and Mrs. Frank Surbaugh were heading to Los Angeles, CA to make their home indefinitely but would be stopping in Oregon to visit Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Surbaugh who were vacationing there.

5/27/1938 – St. Adams Sun reports the Surbaughs left to join her father in Los Angeles.

1939 – Birth of Dewey Bullitt Surbaugh in Los Angeles

I am wondering what happened to her father and brother and whether there were any other descendants to come out of this line. Please help!! I've stuck at this point.

Hello Dean, I can tie this family into our family tree. We have a Paulina Hamlin b.1787 who was married to Mark Dewey Sr. b.1784 both from MA (our neck of the woods on the east coast). I show they're youngest of 10 children, Frederick H Dewey, was born 12 Aug 1830 in Great Barrington. Hope this helps and ties in. I do not however have a death date for Frederick, do you? Would LOVE an invitation to tie in the rest of our Dewey tree. What is Jon's email, who is also attached to the below Dewey threads, whose GGM was Cora. I can't seem to link her up, though we have several Cora's in our database, none born in 1879 (unless one of our dates is mistyped) with a sister Lydia. I'm sure we've got them, just haven't tied them in (yet). Thanks! PS ~ your email dlandrew@netks.net bounced :(

I know who this Frederick H Dewey is. His mother was Paulina Hamlin Dewey. When Paulina died, Mark Dewey remarried Sarah Grinnell and she had six more children. One of them was my great-grandfather David Brainard Dewey. Would enjoy knowing more about your line. Let me know if you'd like an invitation to my Dewey tree. I've always wondered what happened to the Dewey children who had Paulina as their mother.
Was this a photo of RH Dewey, or a photo taken by him? he was a photographer in Pittsfield, MA, perhaps most famous for taking one of the only existing photos of Herman Melville. If it is a photo of him, I would love a copy. He married Harriet Murray, the niece of an ancestor of mine.

I also come from Dewey lineage of Isreal Dewey b. 1645. According to my findings (mostly from Ancestry) Isreal's father was Thomas b. 1603 in Sandwich, Kent, England. Thomas' father was also a Thomas D. married to Joanne Fush. He was b. 1577-81 in England. His father was Simeon Dewey who according to some of my research is listed as SIR Simeon Dewey. I have no idea why the SIR. I have not been able to find anything further back than that. Can you help?

Thanks in advance,
jdjones825@aol.com

I am looking for any information about the family of James H. Dewey, Sr. b. NJ 1815ish or his wife Eveline ? b. NY about 1820. They had six children, Theodore-1837, Richard-1839, James H., Jr. -1840, Sarah-1844, Emeline-1847 and Harriet-1849. They were living in Hoboken,NJ in 1860. I am the great great granddaughter of James H., Jr.. I have no idea what happened to the daughters of the family. There is some connection to Ohio through at least the son of James H jr.'s son Charles H Dewey who died in Cincinnati in 1918.

Hello, Katie,
I have a lot of information about the Deweys who emigrated from Sandwich, England to Massachusetts (and later Connecticut). They might be related to your branch. The oldest Dewey I've traced is Simeon Dewey, who was born before 1555 and lived in Sandwich, Essex, England. Hope this helps. I'd love to learn more about other Deweys in the UK.

Hi...I thought i would reply to your message regards to Dewey families in the Uk. I too do not really know anyone who's a Dewey other than my close family - which is only my grandparents who sadly have past away - George Dewey and Edna Dewey (nee Oliver) My dad Alan and his sister Marion and of cause my mum and my brother. Its sad really that these are the only people I have met within the Dewey family. Though we are from Sheffield I know that my Grandfathers family do descend from Cambridgeshire, so could be possibility we are a distant relative.
My mum started her own family tree and has been successful has her family is large and close and know alot about their history. She did try and start one for my dads family, but know has struggled to get further than a few generations back. Though did find a cousin of my dad's who too now is in the Sheffield area I believe but has family originating from Cambridgeshire.

Anyway, I thought I wold write incase you know of any ancestors who more up north to Yorkshire that could possibly link in with my family and help to grow our family tree.

Thanks

katie

Hi Karen

Its good to hear back from you. I have heard of you from my parents and my mum as told me you have past on some information...but I have not actually had chance to see what she has in a while, as I am not up in Sheffield anymore ( I live down in Cornwall).
Its something that i am interested to see...the family tree on the Dewey side, and about where we descend from...do you know where the name Dewey derives from?
I don't really know a great deal about my dad's family as I said before...I did know about my great grandfathers tragic death but from what I can remember I have only met one of Grandad's brothers..Alfred? I must have been about 10 at the time, and I know there were others there but I really can't remember who, has it was quite a fleeting visit.

Yes my grandad and grandma lived in a small terrace house on Winkley Terrace off Bell house road...can't believe its 12years ago since my grandad past away, I remember him so well and his allotment.

I see that there seems to be a lot of American Dewey's....do you know of any ancestors that travelled that way???

Anyway, thanks again for writing...maybe one day we will meet and can finally meet more of my Dewey family.

Thanks

Katie

Hi Katie
Or should I say 2nd cousin Katie!
I'm Karen, your dad Alans cousin Doreens youngest daughter. I too live in Sheffield and have spoken before to your mum June about the Dewey family tree.
I have researched the family back to their roots in Cambridgeshire with a particular interest in Waterbeach, which is about 10 miles from Ely back to 1682 when they come from Haddenham in Cambridgeshire. They do appear to be quite firmly rooted in Cambridgeshire although there are branches that spread to the London area and more importantly ur own branch which came to Sheffield.

Your grandfather George was one of 5 children, the others being John William, Ernest (my own grandfather),Alfred and Gladys. George was the next to the youngest child born to Ernest John Dewey and Beatrice Ellen Gleadall. The Gleadalls were very much a Sheffield based family.
Has Alan told you the story of Georges father being literally crushed to death in 1919 whilst at work? His wife, Beatrice Ellen, your great grandmother was left to bring up 5 children on her own and my grandfather and his older brother John William (known as Jack) was sent into work to try and help support the family. My own grandfather was a glass blower.

I have some memories of George and Edna. George was infact the person who got my brother a job at Edgar Allens when he left school, which is actually where he still works, some almost 30 years later! I remember them in their little house in Shiregreen. Do you know anything about Georges brothers and sister? I have built quite a lot of information about the family.

Hope to hear from you soon
Karen

Hi Katie
So you are in Cornwall now? When I spoke to your mum you were in Japan and I guess it must have been some time ago.
How are your parents? I havent spoken to them in a while now. Last time I think was with your mum when I shared with her some of the Dewey information I have and she gave me some information regarding her side of the family also. It turns out that one of my students from the Family History class that I taught is related to your mums side of the family tree too. How weird is that in that I helped her trace some of her tree without even knowing that it distantly was related to my own!

You asked about Deweys and where we descend from. Unfortunately I have never been able to work that work out but there does seem to be a lot of Deweys in the Sandwich area? You also mentioned Deweys and America. There is a Dewey that went over to America or so I am told. My mother also mentions a family member going over to Canada. I dont think necessarily that they carried the name Dewey when they went over just that they were descended from Deweys.

It was weird to hear you talk about Uncle George as you did. I didnt even know that he had an allotment! My mother always speaks of him being a well spoken person. She often recalls her mentioning to him about his relatives being pig farmers to which his reply was ' my dear, my father was far to posh to be a pig farmer'
It would be great if you are ever in Sheffield visiting your parents to meet up. In all honesty I cannot even remember what Alan and June look like. Although I do have your mum added on my Facebook account!!! Did Uncle George (sorry your grandad) ever pass you down any family photos? I have some of my grandfather Ernest. What's your email address and maybe I could mail you copies.

Speak soon
Karen
