Descendants of Obadiah DeWhitt

I am looking for information on Obadiah DeWhitt, born in 1782. Also for contact information on any living descendants. I believe Obadiah was my 3rd great-grandfather William French DeWhitt's oldest brother, or at the least an uncle or cousin, but have no documentation. Obadiah was in Logan County, KY as early as 1800 because his name is on the 1800 Logan County, KY Tax List. On the tax list, his last name is spelled Dewitt, but a variety of different spellings can be found for members of our family at that time. He is also listed in the 1810-1890 Census of Logan County. William, who was born in 1794 in SC, is recorded as having been bound out to a bricklayer in Logan County in 1810. Samuel DeWhitt, born in 1792 in SC has been documented as being William's brother. I also believe, but cannot document, that there was a younger brother, Joseph, born in 1800 in KY.

My great great grandfather was Joseph Dewhitt born about 1800. His son was James Madison Dewhitt. He was married to Mary Angeline and they had a son Joe Atlas Dewhitt and a daughter Martha Ann Dewhitt Bates. My father was James William Dewhitt. I have some of this branch history. My story of Joseph is the same as yours. They were all died in west Tennessee. As a young woman, a man came from Texas, with his sons to our home in Jackson Tennessee.
I'm very sorry to have missed the reunion, I just found this thread. William French DeWhitt's was my GGG grandfather. His daughter Mary Ellen my GG Grandmother. My Dad had been working on our family tree for years, until he passed on 10 years ago. I have taken over the quest, and I have been coming up short with William Dewhitt. I have photo copies that are suppose to be pics,or tin types of Wm Dewhitt and Nancy Mcwhorter but It's not for sure. It seems he died a little soon for pic's. If you have pic's (by remote chance) or any other info would be fantastic. Thanks Patsy email:aaa.glass@sbcglobal.net

Descendants of Samuel, William French, and Joseph DeWhitt

I am looking for living descendants of brothers Samuel, William French, & Joseph DeWhitt. Some members of the family changed the spelling to DeWitt. My purpose is to invite them to join a family web site and to attend a June 23-25, 2006 family reunion.

William French DeWhitt, my 3rd great-grandfather, was born in 1794 in SC. He married Nancy McWhorter, who was born about 1800 in SC , about 1815 in TN. By 1816, they were living in Muhlenberg County, KY, where my 2nd great-grandfather, Henry, the first of their 15 children, was born. When their third child, Allen Wakefield, was born (about 1820), they were living in Monroe County, KY. At the birth of their 9th child, Obediah, in 1830, they were living in Simpson County, KY, where the remainder of their children were born. William French died June 29, 1847 in Simpson County, KY.

Samuel DeWhitt, William French DeWhitt's older brother, was born July 13, 1792, in SC. The National Archives, Microfilm Index to War of 1812 service records, show that Samuel DeWhitt served in 3 Reg't (Copeland's) West Tenn. Mil./War of 1812, enlisted as Corporal, discharged as Corporal. On June 18, 1812, in Smith County, TN, he married Nancy McWhorter's oldest sister, Mary Allen McWhorter, who was born June 19, 1792, in SC. Samuel DeWhitt resided for much of his life in the Salt Lick Creek section of eastern Macon County, TN, where he was a dirt farmer, teacher in one-room schoolhouses, and preacher of the gospel. Samuel Dewhitt died September 05, 1853, in Macon County, TN, and is buried in the Gamaliel, Monroe County, KY Cemetery, across the street from the Gamaliel Church of Christ.

The youngest of the three brothers, Joseph, was born abt. 1800 in either Tennessee or Kentucky. Little is known about him, but appears that his descendants migrated to Arkansas, Mississippi, & Texas.

My father Ed Thomas DeWhitt Jr passed away 3 yrs ago. I recall him saying that there were 3 brothers from Tenn. One went to Texas, my clan. one to California and the other to Oregon. 30+ years ago we visited a James DeWhitt in Nashville. He was in his late 60's then but knew very little. He had no children. I met one of my distant cousins from California a few years back. After 5 generations I could tell he was family just by looking at him. Same brown eyes in the men. Amazing.

No, I do not know the parents of my Joseph.
all I know about him is that he was born in KY in 1800. He moved to Carroll Co., TN. and had several children. There may be a rather tenuous SC connection. Joseph's wife, Louisa or Lavisa, was born in either Alabama or SC, depending on which census you are looking at. Also, also In Carroll County was a Washington John DeWitt, a physician who was born in Darlington Co. SC. Maybe a relation?

i also would like to see that documentation that supports the claim that William French DeWhitt was born in South Carolina.this varies from the information i had from Loretta Berry although her information does say his brother Samuel was born there in 1792.sounds like some significant new information please contact me at ki5sf@poncacity.net or radiocarl2000@yahoo.com. thanks.

i suspect that the Joseph DeWhitt ,born in 1800 in Ky ,may have been a younger brother of William and Samuel although i dont really have anything to go on that would really prove that yet.

hi.i believe we are related.although my information gathered from from my cousin ,Loretta DeWhitt Berry, says that my great great great grandfather,William French DeWhitt, was born in Kentucky in about 1794.i have no information on his parents although i believe they came from South Carolina as my cousins research shows he had an older brother,Rev. Samuel DeWhitt who was born in South Carolina in 1792.my great great grandfather was William French DeWhitt,s oldest son ,Henry, born 1816 in Muhlenberg County,Kentucky.Henry,s oldest child was William A. DeWhitt(my great grandfather) born in Monroe County,Kentucky in 1838.the family began to leave Kentucky in the 1850.s and probably all had left by shortly after the civil war.Henry and William A. DeWhitt were still alive after the civil war and left Kentucky for Illinois and then Kansas.mY GGG grandfather,s brother,Rev.Samuel DeWhitt lived most of his life and died in Macon County,Tennesse.

I too have an ancestor named William Dewitt (Dewett) from SC. The birthdate I've been given is 1798. He died in Neshoba Co, MS (1867). He married 1) Mc Afee (two children Thomas W. Dewett and Margaret Dewett); 2) Married a Beggs in AL; 3rd wife) Elizabeth Castles in AL. They had 9 children together and lived in MS. Is this one possibly related to your William? Name has since changed from Dewett, Dewitt, Duett, to Duette for my group. The majority still "Duett". I hdn't seen the DeWhitt spelling yet, but maybe so.

Please email me at ddewhitt@ori.net.

Many years ago my Aunt Lorretta Berry paid the LDS to do a study on "DeWhitt". Most of what I have is summarized from her study and world family tree CDs. No one I know has been able to verifiably get information that told us anything prior to William French DeWhitt. Therefor your information is very significant to us.

I am looking forward to sharing with you!

William DeWhitt

I would be very, very happy to learn more about the family of William "French" DeWhitt. I believe my tree of descendants to be pretty well informed but I have had to "guess" to go up.

Since I posted the message you responded to I have "guessed" a little better but my weak link is not having conclusive evidence of where William was from and who his parents are.

My guess is his parents are Henry Dewitt and Elizabeth Jackson. I guess Henry died in Virginia in 1795 which has led some to believe that William was born in Virginia not South Carolina. I would like to hear more about a South Carolina connection as Nancy Mcwhorter was born there.

I know a couple other DeWhitts who would be very interested in any evidence you have that can help us conclusively know who William's parents are.

Please, tell me more.
