Looking for Info

Hello, I am a descendant of the Dewolfs. My grandmother is a Dewolf through her father and so forth. My grandmothers name is Beverly Jean Shelby Dewolf and her fathers name was Arthur Raymond Dewolf and her mothers name was Helen Dewolf Carey. So to my knowledge from ancestory and hopefully its all correct I am related to Balthasar. From what ancestory.com says Balthasar is my 11th great grandfather. I'm just looking for any and all kinds of information to make sure what I do have through this website is true and accurate due to having a Dewolf family reunion this coming July in Indiana, and I'd like to share what information I have obtained. So any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Samantha

I would be interested in this Pdf. I have the 6 Microsoft works disks from James DeWolfe of Marshall, Michigan, a geneaolgist who researched the DeWolf(e) family for over 25 years. My husband saved it as a CD from the original floppies, but when we moved it from our 2004 to our 2010 computer, it doesn't work as well (no columns in the spreadsheet, and columns are what determine which generation). But I didn't know that there was a 1926 DeWolf and Dolph reunion. My e-mail address is germaine.endres@gmail.com Thanks!--Germaine DeWolfe Endres

I know that Putnam DeWolf married Hepsibah Gates about 1800 in Vermont, but can someone point me to a source for this or advise where to look for one?. Is there a civil or church registry for Vermont, or for the town/county in Vermont, where they were married (Rutland)? I've had no luck with Vt genweb or a search of LDS records. Thanks.

I've been doing more prowling. They lived close by DeWolf family territory in Rhode Island until 1860. He or his ancestors were probably owned by the slave trading DeWolf family.

You might try testing at 23andMe, and see if you connect to that family. Descendants of that family often do connect to it despite it being further back than 5th cousins. Someone has been collecting their DNA snippets.

And if it's an option, do the Y DNA at Family Tree DNA (23andMe doesn't do it).

Dora

There are Black DeWolf's? Do tell!

Actually I've wondered where they all were, and I've also wondered if this could be the explanation for Black distant relatives at 23andMe.

Is there a DeWolf Y DNA project? If not there should be. You don't say if this is perhaps your own straight paternal line, because you don't give your own name. If you are a DeWolf, I'd get Y DNA testing done.

Probably either he was owned by a DeWolf, or his paternal line ancestor was a DeWolf - or both.

The DeWolf's shipped huge numbers of slaves. None of those that were sold at market would have given the DeWolf name to any children born of any shipboard rape. But the DeWolf's also owned slaves, probably not in large numbers in Connecticut. But Barbados or Guadalupe or whatever would have been another story. The founder of the line that shipped slaves had a plantation there and could have used many slaves.

Dora

Charles DeWolf

I have been desperately searching for information on my 4th Great Grandfather, Charles F DeWolf. He was born in Rhode Island in 1829 and was listed as Mulatto on the census. He married Ann Jane Scott, Born 1830 in Canada and they had four children. Isabel DeWolf, New Bedford, MA 1853, Ann G DeWolf, New Bedford MA 1854, Charles F DeWolf Jr., New Bedford MA 1856 and Letitia DeWolf, New Bedford MA 1863. The family owned a consignment/ Furniture store in New Bedford as well. I believe Charles died around 1881. I would like to know how Charles received his last name if he was mulatto. Was he the offspring of the slave trading DeWolfs, or was the offspring of a DeWolf slave who took the DeWolf surname when his family was freed? If anyone can help me out with this I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Thank you for checking. Deao might not look like an actual surname, but I can assure you that it is. I have DEAO well documented from 1850 until present time. I just can't find that spelling before 1850, so I am on the hunt for an alternate spelling....and I've tried many, many variations. Deao and DeWolfe lived in the same community in Stark Co. IL. I have other circumstantial or anecdotal "facts" that I was trying to prove, or dis-prove. Kathleen Deao

No Eli in the document, I just checked it. Maybe it is a B and not a D? Deao doesn't make as much sense as Beau and D/B and o/u are easy to mess up in handwriting.Beau is an actual surname, but Deao doesn't look like one at all.

Based upon the extensive genealogy done by James Boyle DeWolfe which I have the entire record, Elisha DeWolf's parents were Oliver DeWolf and Amy Bishop. You will see that the spelling varies with an "e" or no "e". I have used James' spelling. One relative who when to Balthazar's grave site has the spelling without an "e". I can provide James' genealogy via email (I have winzip all the files)

Not real sure about the connection between my DeWolfs and your group, but they keep showing up together in PA and DE.
On travel at the moment and do not have all my files with me, but when I get settled around the 2nd week of January I will dig up some stuff and see what I can find.
Thanks
Bruce Needham

Bruce - I have no DeWolfe family, but I do have RAPHUNs who came to Philadelphia in 1735 from Alsace. I have no Jesephine, but it sounds like they are from my family, I have not traced indirect lines, only my line. Do you have any parentage for her?

Joel

My grandmother was Margaret DeWolfe of Wolfville NS (born around 1910). There is a museum there and also a lot of people living there who know a great deal of the family history. I suspect if you go there you will be able to find out the family tree. I do also know that there are many volumes of the dewolfe family history that a lady in wolfeville oversees and these volumes will have info also.

They are buried in Scots Bay.

I think the Elisha listed selling land might be Elisha's father, He was a junior and this Elisha was a 3rd.

I don't know any other information

Sara Olsund

Re: Maritime DeWolfs

I have been wondering about Elisha DeWolfe who married Margaret Loveless. They resided in Scott's Bay and Black Rock, Kings Co., NS. The purportedly had fourteen children. One of them, Elizabeth, was the first wife of my grea-grandfather, Fales Newell Rogers. I descend from his second wife, Mary Belle Crowe.
In a petition to the gov't in 1836, there is listed an Elisha DeWolfe, Jr. and a James E. DeWolfe. The petition had something to do with the road in Scott's Bay.
Also, an Elisha DeWolfe sold land in Scott's Bay to Edward Comstock in 1828.
Do you have any information on these two Elishas or the James E. DeWolfe mentioned in the 1836 petition? I am of the mind that there were indeed two Elisha DeWolfes either resident or in possession of land here in Scott's Bay, and that this James was a second son of the first Elisha, but I have no proof. Any insights would be most helpful.
Jerry Huntley
Scott's Bay, NS

Re: Elisha Dewolfe bn 1808 Nova Scotia

I have nine children for Elisha DeWolfe and Margaret Loveless and there may have been as many as fourteen.
Oliver
James
Arthur b. abt 1851 m. Alice Parker 1885 in Sherborn, MA
John b. abt 1853
Thomas b. abt 1859
Grace b. 26 May 1862; d. 13 Mar 1901; m. Owen Fenwick Steele
Eunice
Everett
Elizabeth b. abt 1865; d. 13 Jun 1892; m. Fales Newell Rogers (my great-grandfather)[I decend from his second wife, Mary Belle Crowe]

As for the parentage of Elisha. One source I had (and have long since lost the notes on) stated that his parents were Stephen Brown DeWolfe and Harriet Ruggles. The Elisha born in this family was born on 17 Nov 1819.
There are property transaction records that show that there was an Elisha DeWolfe resident in Scott's Bay as early as 1828 when he sold land to John Comstock.
That being the case, I would question whether this is the correct Elisha, being only 11 years of age in 1828. Your birth year of abt 1808 is more plausible, but he would still be only 20 yearsof age. It makes me wonder if there was an Elisha DeWolfe Sr. living here pre-1828.
In an petition to the government for road improvements in 1836 there are two DeWolfe's who put their name upon it; Elisha DeWolfe, Jr. and James E. DeWolfe. The "Jr." attached to this Elisha indicates that there was indeed an Elisha Sr.
By the time of the 1851 Census, there are no DeWolfes listed in the census for Scott's Bay. It appears that Elisha may have moved to Black Rock, Kings Co.,(maybe before 1851)as both Grace and Elizabeth were born there.
Other land transactions show that both Abraham Ells and Jacob Lockhart purchased land from DeWolfes in Scott's Bay; perhaps that was when the family relocated.

So, I would guess that the father of Elisha DeWolfe who married Margaret Loveless would be this Elisha Sr.. I'm not sure if this helps any or not. Just a few clues that I've picked up here and there on this family.

I have nothing on your great-grandfather, Oliver as it is with most of this family.

Regards,
Jerry Huntley
Scott's Bay, NS
