I would like to know if he or anyone else is still researching his grandfather's family?

Thank you. Liza

DeWoody

Greetings Cousins,

I am a descendant of William Dewoody who was born in Ireland in 1754. He and his brother George Dewoody migrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania shortly after the American Revolution was over. George with his wife and several sons, all from Ireland migrated to Vernango County, Pennsylvania and George brother, migrated first to Greeneville, Tennessee, where he and his wife Hannah Alexander operated the first Hotel in the State of Tennessee. After the War of 1812 was settled, William and his family all migrated to Cottonport, Alabama. Hannah and William had eight children, four boys and four girls.

I descend from their second son, William Dewoody Jr. William Dewoody Sr., died shortly after the 1820 census was taken, in Cottonport, Limestone County, Alabama. Hannah his wife died 1822 also in Cottonport. They were buried in the city cemetery, but it was long forgotten until Interstate 31 was being built. Over 160 graves were uncovered and removed to Hayden Cemetery in Madison County, Alabama. Nobody could identify any of the bodies, so each one received a new wooden coffin with a number place above the graves.

William Jr., was married to Ann Nelson Adams, daughter of John Adams and Margaret Kelsey who also moved from Washington County, Tennessee to Huntsville, Alabama. William and his wife Ann were the parents of five children. Their youngest son, William Aiken Dewoody did serve in Callahan's Texas Rangers, but that was before the Civil War, about October 1855. He served but a brief term, and was later Constable of San Marcos in Hays County, Texas.

During the Civil War he joined Terry's 8th Texas Cavalry as a private scout, during the Battle of Corinth. On May 9, 1862, he was killed at the Battle of Mill Creek, near Bethel, Tennessee. His brother Thomas Jefferson Dewoody was living in Napa, California and served several decades as County Surveyor. During the War he served in the Union Army. California at that time was so far away from the Eastern Battlefield, its men served to protect the State from any possible invasion by Confederates.

One of William and Ann Dewoody's daughters was married to Judge, David Campbell Humphreys, who served at the beginning of the War as a General in the Confederate Army. However, he switch sides and did his best to bring Alabama back into the Union, but after Turchin ransacked the town of Athens, Alabama (A Pro Union City - The last Southern City to fly the Union Banner) Humphreys wishes were dashed. After the war was over, he was appointed by President US Grant to serve as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Washington, D.C.

A vast majority of people probably don't realize this but, Northern Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, as well as East Tennessee, and West Virginia were all Pro Union section of the Confederacy. In Alabama, the hot heads in the southern part of the State, were the majority who brought the state into the Confederacy. Had the state been divided East to West instead of North to South, Northern Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia would have all remained a Union States.

William Aiken Dewoody, my 2GG Grandfather had one child by his wife Lucy Ann Tanner. Lucy's grandfather, Samuel Tanner was the first Mayor of Athens, Alabama. William and Lucy were the parents of Lura Lee Dewoody my paternal great-grandmother. Lura married Arthur Marcus Simpson who had two children, the youngest Arthur Jr., was married to Grace Leona Nash. They were the parents of three children, of whom the youngest, Arthur III is my father.

There was apparently some squabble between the Northern DeWoody's and the Southern Dewoody's because of their loyalities during the Civil War. This lasted until the turn of the century. As I recall one of the Southern Dewoody's got in contact with a DeWoody cousin living in Venango County, I don't remember the names of those cousins now, but when the Northern Cousin found out their Southern Cousins all served in the Confederacy, he told them their ancestors would all be turning over in their graves had they known part of the family fought against the Union Banner. He went on to say he was inclined to use the capitol W in their surname. That is the reason for the change in surname. The Northern DeWoody's prefered a Capitol "W" whereas the Southern Dewoody kept the lower case "w".

There is a 500+ book written by Newton Edward Brightwell, a descendant of Samuel Ramsey Dewoody, who was a descendant of my William Dewoody, Jr. I and several members of the family helped Newt with research for his book. However, Newt past away last July 2006, and I believe his daughter may have copies, but I don't have her address. She lives somewhere in Houston, Texas.

I noticed in your information that the brothers came to America with their parents John and Martha Dewoody. This is incorrect. The parents remained in Ireland where they died. Their names still remain a mystery. The John Dewoody who married Martha was actually one of the sons of George and Martha Dewoody.

All of my records on the family is now in my home in Madison, Alabama, but I am back in California awaiting surgery in June 2008. I have been doing research on the family for over 35 years, and can answer most all of your questions about the Dewoody, both Pennsylvania and Southern Dewoodys.

Most Sincerely,

Dennis W. Simpson
(661) 951-6526

Hi. I am distantly related to the Venango DeWoodys but not the branch that your grandfather is in.
The DeWoody that moved west was William DeWoody, brother of George DeWoody. William was born 1754 in Co. Antrim Ireland. They emigrated to America in 1768 with their parents John and Martha Dunwoody.
William moved to Tennessee, then to Alabama and finally to Texas. Two of his sons served under the Arkansas flag during the Civil War and another gave his life in Callahan's Mounted Texas Rangers.
There is a book that was done on the DeWoody family geneolgy. The library in Franklin, Pa has two books. One is a short basic family history and the other is a more detailed work bringing some of the family tree down to the 1980's.
Dear Tom,

There was another Dewoody family in town with the first name of CLairence whom I knew, but not well. They were not related to the est of my knowledge. The Clarence I knew owned a gasoline station on the corner of eighth and Liberty Streets (this would have been in the mid 1950's). I know of no stories in our family of anyone being kicked by a horse, although one of my grandfather's brother's did die as a child while swimming in the Allegheny. I, too, had an auncle Sandh, but unfortunately she was struck with lightning at age 33 at the Crawford County fair grounds in about 1968.

If you wish to get more informaiton there is a very good history of
the Venango County Settlement in the Historical Society in Franklin, Pa. Good luck on your search.

CLG

My grandfather was Clarence Sylvester DeWoody, he was born in the Franklin, PA area in 1911. I do not know too much about his family, except that he had a sister Glady. My grandfather married Winifred Loper, they lived in the Meadville, PA area until their deaths in the late 1980's. Several of my cousins are DeWoody's all living in the Crawford County area.
My Grandparents had four children (Ronald, Lois, Sandra and Judy). My mother married Ronald Smock, she now lives in Meadville, her name is Lois Peters. My uncle's name is Ronald DeWoody, he lives in the Saegertown area. He has four children (Dave, Ronna, Carl and Reita).

The story goes that my grandfather's father lived on a farm, raised horses etc. My great -Grandfather was killed when he was kicked in the head by a horse. Otehr than that I do not know much.

I hope that this helps.

Thanks,

Tom Smock

Dear Scott,

No, I have no luck in locating my three cousins. Did your mother, Mary Jo, grow up in Florida? Is her mother's name Josephine? Was her paternal grandmother's name Enid Dewoody? Does she have two sisters? Dorothy and Enid? Where do they live? Is everyone okay? I hope through you I may have located the right family. I would very much like to contact your Mother and her sisters. I remember visiting with them as a child with our grandmother.

Please write and give more information if you can.

Thank you.

Inside of cover WPGS Quarterly (it is a booklet/magazine-published 4 times a year);
"Western Pa. Genealogical Society began in 1973 by Helen H. Hariss & 13 people. By-laws were adopted, officers installed & first 4 committees started. In 1974 they incorporated as a non-profit (group). "The Quarterly" was edited by Sam Reed Jr. & the Newsletter "JOTS From The Point" edited by Helen Harriss were early undertakings." I became fascinated with my area & family history...
Western Pa. Genealogical Society
4338 Bigelow Blvd., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213-2695
The group has reseachers, that you can hire. The "Quarterly" has an "Queries" section for members-one free query per issue.
Perhaps Venango county has a genealogy/history group that would have more information.

My name is Roger DeWoody and descend from a long line of DeWoody's who were orginally Woodys back in the 1700's in North Carolina.
However if you are the Pennsylvania DeWoodys you are on a different line than I am. If you are interested in the Williamson County DeWoodys of North Carolina- contact me.
