We are in London, UK. My husband's late mother descended from the Dewsbury family of Guyana on her mother's side, and told me that her grandfather, a Mr Dewsbury, was a (white) Scottish merchant who had travelled to Guyana (possibly around the beginning of the 20c but we don't know), and married a (black) Guyanese woman. He was said to have been 'well-to-do'. Some of their children 'returned' from Guyana to Scotland, and settled there. (One of them, I believe, held an academic post at a Scottish university.)

The rest of Mr Dewsbury's children remained in Guyana. I know little else, other than that there are relatives in Guyana and possibly the US or Canada who, I believe, spell their name Duesbury.

I am sorry that I cannot verify any of this information, that I was given only verbally. However, I remember being shown photographs of the family, including a portrait of the Scottish Mr Dewsbury; a grand old man with a watch chain. It was said that he had ginger hair. I imagine he would have gone to Guyana at around the beginning of the 20th century or earlier but I do not know. I believe my mother-in-law remained in touch with her cousins in Scotland but, unfortunately, we do not know them.

My husband and I should appreciate having more information on this Dewsbury or Duesbury line. We are very curious to know more about the Scottish Mr Dewsbury, and about his Guyanese wife.
