Re: Douglas Dexter Jr.-long lost cousin

Tammy, do you know your grandfathers first name? Or your grandmother? Being able to locate them and trace them might help a little bit. Do you know the name of the wife who divorced your uncle? Might be able to trace the children that way too.

Census records won't help much because they probably aren't old enough, (they only release them now after 50 years). So, directories and forums like this are very important. If the children are of marriageable ages, (especially the girl) you could look if you have her first name on any document, like an old obituary of their father or mother (if you suspect or know that they have passed away). The SSDI (Social Security Death Index) may have information that is important also to locate the family, such as the last known address of the person considered next of kin. If your uncle didn't remarry, then the next of kin would be a son or daughter or a guardian of some kind, and you might trace them that way.

One other thing that I did, which has been really surprisingly helpful, is that I started a Dexter group on Facebook and sent out notes to a lot of folks with that surname. The Dexter page is quiet, but every once in a while I get a posting. A lot of those people "friended" me on my regular page also, and so I'm in touch with even unrelated "Dexters" there.

Also, if you haven't already done so, please join the DEXTER-L mailing list (or the DEXTER-D digest mailing, which compiles any daily listings) at rootsweb.com. Again, a quiet list - you won't get a lot of mailings, but there are flurries periodically.

I will put a posting on the Facebook page for you, but if you have a page, please join the group and post any extra details you might have. You just never know who will see it.

Good luck!
Connie Dexter Spicer

Not sure what is meant by a "Dexter Document"

There were 3 Dexter families that settled here in the early 1600s.
My ancester Thomas came in 1630 and settled in Saugus and Sandwich, MA
Richard came in 1642 living in what is now Malden, MA and Gregory came in the 1640s and was one of the original settlers of Providence, RI.

The book on Thomas Dexter's descendants is called The Geneology of the Dexter Family in America. Published in 1905 and currently being reprinted in soft cover.

The one on the Richard Dexter family is called Dexter Geneology This one is interesting as it covers the history of the Dexter family in Ireland. I have not seen this one in reprint anywhere.

I have also not seen a book on the Gregory Dexter family and as I have friends among his descendants, I am sure I would have seen it if it existed.

Both books were compiled and written by decendants of their respective families.

Hello. I don't remember whether I responded to you last fall.

I'm curious whether the genealogy report you mention is a "DEXTER document." I know there was a DEXTER document published by Marvin DEXTER in Killingly, CT, in 1859. And, it is referenced in a YOUNG document. But, no one seems to know about it, not even the Killingly Historical Society.

(The reference said "NEWMAN" published the DEXTER document in 1859.)

FYI: Marvin and Mary (ALLEN) DEXTER only had 2 children, son, John, and daughter, Abby. John and Mary (CLARK) DEXTER had 3 daughters but only one survived to adulthood, and she became, Mrs. Clara YOUNG. Abby became Mrs. Martin CROSBY.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(There were 2 John DEXTER's born in Killingly within a few years of each other in 1830's. One fought in the War and one became a teacher. I am interested in the teacher.)

Document written by Marvin DEXTER in Killingly, CT, 1850's

Hello.

I am very interested in somehow locating a family-history document written by Marvin DEXTER in Killingly, CT. It was about his DEXTER ancestors, going back to Gregory DEXTER. A reference to the document says: "NEWMAN, 1859" and I am assuming that a Mr. Newman published the self-made? document for Marvin in 1859.

I have posted information before about the 3 DEXTER brothers who left the Providence, RI, area in the late 1700's and went to Killingly, CT. Joseph was one of the brothers, and Marvin was one of his sons.

(More DEXTER's arrived a few years later. Cousins? Siblings?)

I wrote to the Killingly Historical Society a few years ago, and they said that they don't know about this "Marvin DEXTER document."

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(FYI: The Killingly Historical Society did have a copy of a "YOUNG document." I was able to obtain a Xerox copy of that. The DEXTER document is referenced in it. The couple I am interested in is: Abner and Clara (DEXTER) YOUNG of Killingly. They had one surviving child, Earle YOUNG, who later lived in New Haven, CT. Clara was the only grandchild of the above Marvin and Mary (ALLEN) DEXTER. They had a son, John, father of Clara, and a daughter, Abby, who became Mrs. Martin CROSBY.)
Records show 3 Dexter families arrived in MA and RI in the first half of the 1600s

Thomas in 1630 in Lynn and Saugua and in 1637 founded the town of Sandwich with 9 Saugus companions in 1637.

Gregory came over arond 1645 and settled in Providence. RI

Richard arrived in 1642 and settled in Malden, MA

Decendants of both Gregory and Thomas moved to CT and remained for several generations.

We still have not been able to find out if these families were related in any way.

Apparently the Providence Historical Society does have some information on Gregory including a plot plan showing the original land owned by him in the 1600s.

The Nahant Historical Society has information on Thomas Dexter as he claimed ownership of Nahant in a legal fight that went on long after his death.

Best regards,

Doug Dexter

Hi again. This is a posting from 2003, and I haven't gotten too much more information in the last 6 years.

Hello, I just put together the probable DEXTER family line for the DEXTER family I am researching:

Gregory DEXTER and Abigail FULLERTON
to son
Stephen DEXTER and Abigail WHIPPLE
to son
John DEXTER and Mary FIELD
to son
John DEXTER and Mary BROWNE
to son
Jonathan DEXTER and Alice LOWE
to son
Joseph DEXTER and Mary ALLEN
to son
Marvin DEXTER and Mary Ann ALLEN
to son
John DEXTER and Mary Anna CLARK
to daughter
Clara DEXTER who married Abner YOUNG
...I do not yet know if there were other children.

And, I believe that Danielson and Killingly are basically the same town. Mrs. John DEXTER was buried in Killingly in 1899; she was taken there from Melrose, MA, where she was then living. Mr. John DEXTER was buried on the grounds of the Tewksbury State Hospital in MA. (long, complicated story)

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

It should be in my more recent postings on this Board.

My line is from Joseph DEXTER (from RI), Marvin DEXTER, John DEXTER, Clara DEXTER. And I think I found out that they came from Rev. DEXTER; I can't think of his name at this second. I'll go check the archives of this Board.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Re: Thomas Dexter and Hannah Higgins, son of Constant Dexter?

I'm researching a Thomas Dexter who married Mary "Polly" Higgins in Gloucester, Mass., on Nov. 4, 1792. He was called a resident of Gloucester in the marriage record.

Thomas Dexter, perhaps this one, was commissioned as commander of the schooner Tarter, a privateer, also a schooner Dart during the Revolution.

Mary Dexter, widow of Thomas, lived in Hamilton Alley, Boston, 1815 Boston Directory. I'm interested in a possible connection to Elizabeth Lloyd Dexter, wife of Zebina Sears, who was also listed in Hamilton Alley in 1816.

I am looking for this DEXTER - Luretta, Euretta, or Retta - b. 1870 Illinois, father b. Canada/Eng, mother b. Ohio. She married 1890 to Timothy BURKE (he b. Ireland 1862) at St. Mel's Catholic Church - she is not a Catholic. Children: Edward Timothy b. 1890, Lula T. b. 1892, Clarence b. 1899 - all in Chicago.

In 1900 they are living at 2322 Fulton, West Town, Chicago. He is a 'painter foreman' and they own their own home.

In 1905 they are in Marathon County Wisconsin living on a farm. They are there in 1910, but Luretta has died 1909 and is buried in the local cemetery.

Do any DEXTER researchers know this Luretta?

Jason Dexter; Darius Dexter CT early 1800's

Can anyone help? I'm researching JASON DEXTER, b. 8 May 1825 in CT, near Mansfield, m. Elizabeth ROOT of Ware, MA, 28 Nov 1845. He died in Somers, CT 4 March 1890 and she died in Somers on 1 Jan 1892. My great Aunt had his father as DARIUS DEXTER, b. 1789, married to Phebe, b. 1 March 1792. DARIUS died 13 Oct 1857, most likely in CT. I know there is a DARIAS who was born in Mansfield, but that was 30 years earlier than "mine". I have seen the Censuses which show a Darius of the correct age bracket as "mine" living in CT in the towns of: Willington, and Mansfield. SO: Does anyone have any info they can share with me?
THANKS!

I have recently come across some information which you may be interested in. I am a dexter. However, only a year ago did I know of or meet any biological family. i have a geneology report that dates back to 1610 when one of my ancestors (cant remember name off the top of my head) came over from england with william dexter (the founder of rhode island)...anyway- there is a dexter cemetery in rhode island which only dexters are buried. my grandfather, bruce dexter is there. it is small with much history--- anyway- i will pull up my geneology map and see if i can find john dexter in that era- i know the name is familiar, I have read it several times..anyway- contact me if you would like

Re: Thomas Dexter and Hannah Higgins, son of Constant Dexter?

The Thomas Dexter that you mention is too young to be the same Thomas Dexter, who married Hannah Higgins, but he appears to be of the generation that could be a son of our Thomas Dexter and Hannah Higgins.
We do not have any other children for Thomas and Hannah, other than Meribah Dexter, born 16 Aug 1770 in Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts. She was married to Henry Jenne in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts on 20 Dec 1796.

If you have any further information on your Thomas Dexter, please let me know.
