George W. Dey obituary: 1920, Quincy, MI

From the Quincy Herald newspaper (Quincy, Michigan), 18 November 1920 issue, page 4:

"Obituary: George W. Dey"
George W. Dey was born in Houston, Ohio, January 17 1841; died Saturday, Novembre 13, 1920.
He was married to Elizabeth C. Harmony, Nov. 29, 1860. The following year she passed away, leaving an infant daughter then only 28 days old, now Mrs. Sarah Trumper of Allen, Michigan. In 1862 he married Henrietta Young and they became the parents of five other children, two sons and one daughter of whom still survive. These are John W. Dey of Gladwin, Michigan; Louis Dey, Northville, Mich. and Mrs. Ida Smith of Allen.
The mother passed on two years ago. Mr. Dey spent three years in the Union army during the Civil War, enlisting with the 50th Ohio in 1862. He was with Gen. Sherman on the celebrated march to the sea and has for years been commander of the local G. A. R. Post.
He came to Michigan in 1872 but returned to Ohio two years later, coming back to Branch County again in '76 where he has resided ever since.
He and his wife were members of the Union Church and have always been held in high regard by their neighbors and friends who will extend heartiest sympathy to the family in bereavement.
Funeral services were held at the late residence on Liberty street, Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock, conducted by Rev. Fales and interment made in the family lot at Lakeview under the auspices of the Grand Army.
Monmouth Cty NJ Dey Photos

I have recently received photos (tin plates and portraits) of the Dey family. The photo album is pre-1900 and has been inscribed with names of people in the photographs. In the back of the book it indicates "this is Lettie's book" - Lettie unknown maiden was married to Archibald Dey (son of Peter and Elizabeth McChesney Dey), as well as Alonzo Chaffey. Photos include Lettie and Archilbald (Arch) - Elizabeth Dey Chaffey, Meg (Margaret Dey unknown married name - husband named Grills or Gills? Gilbert maybe?), Gradmom Dey (Elizabeth McChesney Dey), Carrie - Edith Crutchfield, there are other photos that just state "all Lettie's friends - don't know) from older people to the very young taken by Morton Artist, Providence RI. and other RI photographers, many of the "don't know" photos are the same pose, same location.
I would love to find out more about these Dey's and the "friends" in the photographs.
This photo album was in the attic of my grandmother Catherine Euler Ervin m: Carl Ervin - parents Robert Ervin and Carrie Chaffey - which was taken out of the attic of my great grandmothers (Carrie Chaffey) by my mother - Carrie Chaffey's parents are Alonzo Chaffey and Elizabeth Dey - Elizabeth's parents are Peter Dey and Elizabeth McChesney ---- I am in search of any descendants of any of these families - there are indications of missing photos - Charlie Dey - Elias Dey, Hannah Dey, Charles Benham (married Sally (Sarah) Dey), John Dey - these are all the children of Peter and Elizabeth McChesney Dey ---- my generation of Chaffey's ended in 1966 with the death of Carrie's brother Arthur who never married. I believe he wrote the inscriptions in the photo album - I also believe that the descendants of the children of Sally (Sarah) Dey Benham Zerwick (Archibald Benham and Harry Zerwick) may have these missing photos - however, I have no information to marriages or if there are descendants.
Any assistance or if anyone would like to see the images (I am able to scan the tin plates, even though some are very dark) I would love to share.
If there is anyone out there who is a descendant of Peter Dey and Elizabeth McChesney or a Chaffey from Monmouth County, I would love to hear from you.
Carolyn

David (DEY) HOLLOPELER & Ada WESTROPE - Mexico, MO - March 1904

"The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Saturday, March 26, 1904

THE NAME SUITED HER.

Mexico, Mo., March 26.---Miss Ada WESTROPE, a young
woman of this place, sent the following message to David
HOLLOPELER, formerly of this place, who is now holding
a position in Spokane, Wash.:

"Never mind your name; see letter."

The explanation of the odd message is in the fact that
HOLLOPELER is not an admirer of his name, and, it is
reported, recently took steps to have it changed to DEY,
his mother's family name. It seems that this was delaying
his return to Missouri and the ceremony which was
necessary to change Miss WESTROPE's name.

HOLLOPELER was formerly connected with the Mexico
Ledger. After his return here he will accept a position
with the Intelligencer.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo5
DEYs of Fowlerville, Mich. (Livingston County)

I'm trying to locate 3 items that might help me with my worst brick wall. My ancestor, Susan DEY, born in 1832, left almost no public records so I don't have her marriage or death dates and can't track her husband.

Susan was the daughter of William McA. Dey (1793-1874) whose family left northern New Jersey about 1811 and lived in Seneca County, NY for several decades. William moved to Michigan before 1850 and settled in Handy Twp., Livingston County.

One of William's sons, Pierson W. Dey (1827-1902), received William's family Bible, and from Pierson it went to his oldest son George Augustus Dey who had it in about 1900. (I know this from Pierson's Civil War pension application, when the Bible was cited as evidence of Pierson's age.) I have been trying to locate the Bible for years.

Recently I learned that an unpublished genealogy of this Michigan branch of the DEY family was prepared in 1938 and the original was in the possession of Theodore Dey of Fowlerville, Mich. Unfortunately he died in 1997. I would like to locate and obtain a photocopy as it may have taken dates from the William McA. Dey Bible.

I have also been told that there was a "scroll" of a family tree which was displayed at Dey family reunions in Fowlerville. I would like to locate that too.

I am descended from Pierson Dey's younger sister Susan who married Allan (or Almon?) Woodard. She died about 1860/61 and her sons Henry and Fred were named in the will of William McA. Dey as "the legal heirs of my daughter Susan Woodard, deceased." Fred Woodard was my great-grandfather.

Please help me if you can. Thank you.
William DEY Herbert b. 1881 in NJ

I need to find my great grandfather's connection to the Dey name. He was born William DEY Herbert on Dec 17, 1881. His father was Charles A. Herbert (a farmer) and his mother was Josephine S. Clayton. They too, were from Monmouth Co. (Freehold) New Jersey. Dey comes from the Herbert side of the family. I've found two Sarah Deys that married Herberts (one James, the other William - this last couples son was named William Dey Herbert - my great grandfather's namesake?). And both Sarahs had mothers named Margaret Perrine. Thank you.

Mary Dey/ Lewis Dey Emens/NJ

My gr-gr-grandmother was Mary A. Dey (born 10/17/1848). She married James Henry Emens. They had a son, Lewis Dey Emens. I have no information on Mary's parents although I suspect I might find a Lewis Dey in her background. Any one have any information? Thanks.

Kathi
kathigilmour@jps.net
