Wow! Thanks for the reply! Interesting...my father's middle name was CAMIEL! So I guess it's possible he was named after his uncle-by-marriage?? Marie would have been my grandfather's sister...and my father's aunt. The birth date of Marie would have been at the right time...my grandfather was born in 1883. I thought they were all from Deinze, though--not familiar with Ostend, as you mentioned. I'll look through my father's things to see if I can find the Verschaeve or deBethune names anywhere. Unfortunately, there's just no one left to ask! We still have relatives in Belgium that we are in contact with, but they're on my grandmother's side, and I don't know that they would have any info on the Dhaenens family. Fun to hear from you--thanks for the post!

This may be a small link to your family tree. I have a MARIE RACHEL DHAENENS 1891-1960 married to my grandfather's cousin, CAMIEL VERSCHAEVE. The family were originally from Ostend, Belgium and many of the VERSCHAEVE and de BETHUNE family members moved to Moline, Illinois (incluidng my grandfather). So the only link I have is that a DHAENENS married a cousin of my grandfathers and although I cannot prove yet that CAMIEL imigrated to Moline his cousin did. An Aunt in the family insists other members of my grandfather's family did imigrate to Moline. I just haven't proved yet it was CAMIEL.

SUSAN
IRVING, TEXAS

Margaret Mercer Dhaenens, married to Alphonse Dhaenens, was my great aunt. I know little of the Dhaenens family other than finding the date of death of Alphonse. I do not know if they had any children. Margaret had 2 sisters, Lola Mae Bailey and Jessie Blaney. Jessie lived in Guelph, Ontario. They are all buried with their parents, James Wesley and Catherine "Cassie" Mercer in Kewanee, IL. Margaret's brother, Claude was my great grandfather. I find no evidence of him after his divorce from Edith Sherwood Mercer after 1930. They had been living in Dayton, OH with son, Wesley Elton Mercer (my father).

I don't have much information except that my grandfather (Charles) was from Deinze. His father's name was Victor and his mother was Eugenie. My grandfather had a sister named Marie. I do not know of any other brothers or sisters--it is possible there were others. They lived in a house near St. Bartholomew Church. They lived upstairs above a store or shop of some kind. I have been to Belgium (in 1998) and have seen the building. Charles married Helena Lambert at St. Bartholomew Church in 1902 or 1903. My grandparents left Belgium to come to the United States in 1905 or 1906. They settled in Moline, Illinois -- a place where many Belgium immigrants made their home.

There is at least one other family member that I know of living here in the States--she is the daughter of Marie Dhaenens and A. Van Loo from Wisconsin. Her name is Sr. Alice Van Loo (formerly Sr. Paschaleen). Sr. Alice is in her 90s by now. She had brothers named Henry, Bill and Morris. I think Henry (Hank) might still be living too. Bill and Morris have both died.

My grandparents had three sons--Gaston, Alphonse and Albert. Gaston died as a young boy. Alphonse and Albert were both born in Moline, in 1910 and 1917 respectively. Albert is my father. He died in 2000. Alphonse died in 1995.

Does any of this information match what you might have? Please reply if it does.

Hello C Lemieux, My inquiry was made in haste before I set out for Belgium to find relatives on the Dhaenens side. The mystery was to find history of ancestors and and living descendants. I did do that to some degree. My grandmother Marie was the sister of your great grandfather Alois. Their coming to America was hopeful, but turned very difficult in SD. After Eugenia died, the children or some of them were adopted, thanks for the name of this family. Joe Lemieux, I believe, is still alive in Siren WI, he is an oldtime family friend /cousin is still close to my uncle Henry and I think that Elizabeth was temporaily taken care of by my grandmother when she was middle school age. I have some of these stories contained in tapes made for us 9 yrs. ago, by Maries daugther Sister Alice Van Loo , recently deceased. There was much deprivation and sadness in their lives in SD.I met 2 other 3rd cousins in Belgium last Oct. I guess that makes us 3rd cousins, once removed ? You are my childrens generation? aged 30-40? there are several of our Dhaenens people living in Moline Ill . I would much like to know more about you, your parents, and family. I would appreciate any further contact at my email address Linvil2003@yahoo.com. I am very interested in meeting our extended family.

so, sorry it has taken so long to reply. I haven't worked on this for some time now. In all honesty, I suppose what has prompted me now was the recent death of my grandmother, Elizabeth Lemieux. I seem to learn little pieces of information and that is what I'll share now.
Elizabeth married Amos Lemieux. She was born to Alois and Eugenia(Deporter) Dhaenens. Her mother died when she was 18 months old. She was raised by William and Della O'Brien in Van Meter, SD. She had three sisters, Margaret, Marcella, Marie, and a brother Joe.
Other than this all I have are a copy of Alois Dhaenens land grant in the Black Hills and a copy of the manifest when he came to Ellis Island. I know nothing about his wife, or his life prior to his arrival. I know that his destination was Moline IL. as listed on the manifest.
I have shared your message with my mother and father and they may contact you as well. She did mention a daughter of Marie that she had heard about. Thank you and sorry again for such a long lapse in the communication. I did save your message but did not have time to reply when I received it. I guess then I just forgot about it.

Yes, they first settled in SD, but then relocated to Siren WI. One uncle Henry is still alive there. I will probably visit him in the next month. He gave me a sketch of the family tree some years ago, at which time my web search was fruitless. Where do you live, where do your parents reside, are your grandparents still alive? Have you connected with relatives in Moline Ill. ? I am just starting this search today as I will visit Belgium soon. Have you made any connections there? Please get back to me soon, Linda Villegas(VanLoo)

Hello,

Sorry, I don't have much information on Gentile D'Haenens.

What I know is he was born in 1868,
died in Spokane WA, on 10 Jul 1937.

He was married to:
first name: Leontine
last name: unknown. One record lists "Holdspec".
But "Holdspec" doesn't sound like a real name to me.
Could be an error of somekind. She was born in 1877.
Died 15 Dec 1926, in Washington State.

Most of this information comes from this website
Cemetary Transcription Libary:
http://www.interment.net/data/us/wa/spokane/stjoe/st_joseph_...
Saint Joseph Cemetery
Trentwood, Spokane County, Washington

Cheers,
John S.
My Husbands family were originally D'Haenens, Our lines name changed when his Grandfather spelled it Dhanenes. I believe all the changes in the spellings of D'Haenens were to make it easier to pronounce for people in this country.
His GreatGreat Grandfathers name was Petrus D'Hanenes from Gent Belgium. He married Mathilde Bonamie who was from Knesserle Belgium. At that time marriages were to take place in the home town of the bride, Petrus and Mathilde resided in Knesserle and had at least one child, Henricus (Henry) D'Haenens who is my husbands great grandfather. He married Marie Sidonie Coddens of Hansbeke Belgium. They resided in Hansbeke and had 3 sons, one son Gustaf Leon D'Haenens was my husbands Grandfather. They came to the US in September 6, 1899 and settled in South Bend Indiana.
Do you know if your Gentile had any siblings and could there be a connection?
Please email me if you wish. dhanenes@toolcity.net

Paula
Hello,

My maternal grandfather was Norbert Dehaenen,
who was born Norbert D'Haenens in Detroit Michigan,
son of Gentile D'Haenen(s), brother of Ace D'Haenen(s),
formally of Spokane, Washington.

It is believed that Gentile was of in or around
Ghent, Belgium. However, I do not have exact
information on him.

Also, we do not know why Norbert Dehaenen
changed his name from D'Haenen to Dehaenen.

Apparently he was not happy living under the stricked
control of his parents, so he set off on his
own at a very early age, and at that time changed
his name.

Sinc,
John S.
Paul, thanks for the quick response. My grandmother (who died this year at 98) said her mother's maiden name was pronounced like "Dennis." On the other hand, I spoke w/someone in northern NY who pronounced it as "Day-nens." I'm confused. At any rate, my g-grandmother came to the U.S. in 1900 from The Netherlands, first to NY State, then to Michigan. If you ever hear of a connection to this Dhaenens, please let me know. Thanks!

No, Terry, I'm not related to Marie. My name originates in Belgium, not the Netherlands. I don't think between the two there is much difference. I do know it means"the cock" in Dutch and Flemish and there is a gamecock on our crest. It is pronounced Donn-ens which is also the name I gave when making reservations. It's just easier. No noe likes to see a d and h next to each other. Thanks for the mail and keep in touch if you'd like to.
Paul Dhaenens
