Hi - my husband, Vince, is the grandson of Emily Sposta DiBernardo. I have been researching the town of Avigliano, Italy where the Sposta's originated. And yes, the name was Esposito. Where it was changed I don't know. But there were three families (brothers) who came to Port Chester.
The census takers really messed up their names in 1900 - I read through the census to find them -- two of them living in the same building. The name Esposito indicates that someone in the line was an illegitimate child. If you'd like more information contact me at swilliams1200@comcast.net I am collecting the church records and have traced the family back to the original Esposito -- would be happy to share by inviting you to my tree on ancestry.com Looking forward to hearing from you. Susan
