Hello-

I bought a home in Calitri several years ago--it's located on the Via Posterla, and my next door neighbor is Canio DiCairano. Canio is a charming and very courtly man who was in the Italian Cavalry in WW2--and survived what was probably the last great cavalry charge in history in Russia (the battle of Ibushenkij in August 1942). I'm a history teacher and a historian from New York, and I'm trying to get the Government of Italy to provide some sort of formal acknowledgement of Canio's distinguished service. Are any DiCairanos who use this site in any way familiar with Canio? He is a profoundly decent but elderly man, a widower who has health issues, and I would dearly like to see him receive official commendations while he is still able to appreciate it.
Thank You,
John Valter

Dear Claudio,

Thank you for your reply. Do you know the names of the parents of Antonio Di Cairano and Mariangela Codella?

I am not descended from the Di Cairano's but I am related to the family by marriage.

Just out of curiosity, does your father remember a Vito Michele Gervasi? Vito Michele is my uncle. He is married to Margherita Zarrilli. They have two daughters, Iolanda and Cinzia. Cinzia is engaged to be married to Michele Maffucci next September. Michele Maffucci's grandmother is Gaetana Di Cairano in Maffucci, daughter of Canio Michele Di Cairano and Mariantonia Metallo. Any connections?

Sono andato a Calitri nel diecembre 1999 e ancora nel gennaio 2001 e ho avuto una bellezza vacanza. Spero andare ancora quest'estate.

Saluti,
Jason Gervase

Hallo, to Jason and Theresa,
sorry I didn't reply immediately but I hadn't seen my parents for some two weeks. They live some 30 km from where I live.
I asked my father (Antonio Di Cairano, now 76, born 1925/03/01)about his ancestors and he seems to remember a lot of things, although he left Calitri in 1947 to work in the Belgian coalmines.
His father was Giuseppe Di Cairano (1900-1976), married to SALVA Angela (died in 1976). My father grandfather's name was also Antonio, and he must have died in 1904-1905. My father's grandmother was CODELLA Mariangela, and she lived until march 1956.
As you probably know, the people from Calitri all had nicknames for each other. My fathers family was better known in Calitri as "Barracca".
Theresa, my father seems to remember your grandfather Emidio and your grandmother Vincenza "Cinzina". Of course, I don't know if we're talking about the same people. He doesn't immediatly remember a Luigi Di Cairano, but he said to me that there were at least two Bartolomeo Di Cairano.
Does your grandparents and parents still live ? And do they remember Antonio, (and his brothers Vincenzo, Mario, Domenico, Vittorio and the only sister Emidia) ?

Jason, in which way are you related to the Di Cairano ?

Hope to hear some something about you both.
Claudio
Hallo Jason,
sunday night, (here in Belgium) I was searching on the internet, looking foor some information about my family name Di Cairano and just by accident I fell on this site.
My father is Antonio Di Cairano, and was born in Calitri in 1925. He was the son of Giuseppe Di Cairano (1900-1976). My father was the first son of 6 children. He emigrated to Belgium after World War II. His brothers and only sister also left Calitri but stayed in Italy. They went to Rome and Milano. My father once told me that his grand-father went twice to the USA, but that he returned before his first child (in 1900, my grandfather) was born.
It always fascinated me to know if there were other Di Cairano's outside Italy. And although you are not a Di Cairano, you seem to know much about (some of them). At least there is a Theresa Di Cairano to which you replied.
How was your trip to Calitri, last year ? When I was a child I went some 5 times, every 3-4 years with my parents. My grand-parents lived in via Fontana, one of the first houses of the village when coming down from the railway station.
I will be going next year of within two years, with Sandro my second son, who longs to know where he comes from.
I hope to hear something about you.

Claudio Di Cairano

Dear Theresa,

I have a lot of info on your grandparents. Your grandfather, Emidio, was born on July 21, 1910 in Calitri. His wife, Vincenza Acocella, was born August 5, 1912 also in Calitri. They were married on November 14, 1933 in Calitri. Both died in Bridgeport, CT. I am not certain when Emidio died but Vincenza died on January 24, 1991. Emidio was the son of Bartolomeo Di Cairano and Maria Teodora Metallo. I have tons of information on Maria Teodora Metallo's ancestors (her ancestors were my ancestors also). I have no idea who Vincenza Acocella's parents were yet. If you are interested in exchanging more information, please contact me at Jasnager810@aol.com. I have been to Calitri once and will be going again in 3 weeks. There is a website, mailing list, and even a magazine for Calitri!!

Jason Gervase (my great-grandfather was Nicola Gervasi, born in Calitri)
