Re: Dias, Dyas or Diaz

(from the Methodist Church Archives:)
According to the 1943 Louisiana(Central) Annual Conference Journal, Rev. Dyas "withdrew" fromthe Annual Conference to "join another church." Thedenomination of the other church is not given. Bishop Robert E.Jones was the presiding bishop of the Louisiana (Central) AnnualConference at that time.

(From My Mom, Esther Shelhamer James:)
Rev Dyas showed up at our door in Sheveport, having been stripped of his commission in the Methodist Church. He had gotten into a heated dispute with the Bishop over the building of a resort in Gulfport for the use of the Methodist clergy. Rev Dyas considered it nothing more than a brothel. The Gulfside Assembly actually had a long rich history, (see wikipedia) but Rev Dyas was disgusted by the plans. Of course, his theology, and my parents, would have considered co-ed swimming to be the same as adultery.
He was the principal of my parents' Central Chrisian School (for negro children) for about a year before he died.
Thank you for your reply regarding W. L. Dyas. From what I understand, he was a pretty outstanding person having served in a number of Methodist churches in Louisiana. I'd love to hear anything you have to share about him. Thanks again!

Ronald

Dyess/Dias/Dious in South Carolina

I am descended from a family which changed its name from Dyess to Dias to Dious. Lud Arnold Dias (c1804-unknown) was the son of Josiah Boyet and Elizabeth Everitt Dyess, widow of William Dyess. Lud's wife was named Eliza and his children included: William, Emily, Caroline and Henry. William (c1834-late 1800's), my ancestor, married Sally Ridgedale. Their children included: Mary Jane (married David R. Howard), Jessie (married Mary Jane "Mollie" Kennedy), George, Clara, Walker, Julia, Laura (married John Wylie Broome) and Leila (m. Willie Alexander). This family lived in the Barnwell/Aiken County area of South Carolina, though descendants spread out. Would love to corresond with anyone with interest in this family.

The only connection to Zanzibar is that my great-grandfather Joachim Francis Pinto (my granny's dad) came to Zanzibar in 1914 with his twin brother. But I don't know of any Dias connection. The Dias side of the family is a bit of a mystery.

Very cool archaeological connection. I am actually an archaeologist here in Canada - I was at least. I now do Policy work. That is very interesting.

I only have some info from my granny. I know that my grandfather C.P. Dias ran the International Motormart in Tanga and I have a very nice photo album from the 30's with photos. There may be some clues there.

I will have to do a little more digging. I will ask about Isodore Dias see if that name rings a bell. There may be a link?

Take care
Lu-Anne

Lu-Anne

Another thing I found was that my Dias line is somehow related to Isodore Dias - a Portuguese Concul in Zanzibar. bearing in mind Zanzibar's proximity to Tanga, do you have any such family stories?

Also I did go to Goa, and found that my branch of the DIas family lived in the far end of Chandor across the road from the remains of the ancient Hindu temple (now an archaelogical site). The Dias' of Chandor are indeed an ancient family of the village.

Do you have any dates?

No problem. So you are thinking there is no relation then to C.P. Dias? I will ask my grans if any of these names ring a bell. She is 92 so her memory is not as good as it used to be. Thank you for your reply. If you do come across anything - please let me know. I am getting a little less hopeful that I will find any more info without actually going to Tanga and Goa. ;). Do you know if you could hire someone in Goa to do the research?

Thank you again. Interesting work you are doing. Lu-Anne

Dear Lu-Anne

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have been away on business in the Philippines.

I think the sisters name is probably Epifania. My great grandmother was a Maria Escolastica Dias from Chandor, who married Estavao Pereira from Chinchinim. Escolastica had a sister called Maria Dorothia Dias. But I have no idea of any other siblings. The Chandor families are really difficult to work with, as few kept an oral or written history.

I am aware that there were a number of Goan bandsmen based at the British Army in Pune (Poona) around 1883. I will keep a look out.

Regards
Cliff

Hello Cliff

I send a couple of messages. My grandfather was Camilo Peter Dias - he lived in Tanga, Tanzania for sometime but I believe he is from Chandor, Salcette originally. He had 10 brothers and sisters - one was named Efifania I was told. He was married to my grandmother Martha Rose Dias who is still alive and living in Ontario. I know nothing about his side of the family. He was a manager at the International Motor Mart in Tanga. I have a lovely album of photos from before he married my grandmother - that show that he was in the indian Army in Poona (Pune) but we do not know for what.

If you have any info on the Dias family that might be used - could you please let me know. I would really like to know if there is a connection - I am starting to get a little discouraged.

Thank you kindly.
Lu-Anne DaCosta

I just saw this post and I’m wondering if we have family connections:
My mother’s father was AGOSTINHO DIAS RAPOSA (born abt 1895) and he was from Pico de Mafra, Mosteiros also.
He had 4 brothers: MANUEL, JOSÉ, FRANCISCO, JOÃO and 3 sisters MARIA DA LUZ, MARIANNA and MARIA JOSÉ. Most of them came to US and/or Canada but with the exception of my grandfather. I don’t much information on them.

My grandfather’s parents names were: FRANCISCO DIAS RAPOSA and MARIA ADELINA DIAS.
(he had been married before but I don’t have any information on that marriage)
Are you related to Thomas Dias/Dyas of Westmoreland Co., VA?
I have many, many land transactions of this Thomas Dias who think might be related to my George SOUTH. The one I found the most interesting was the following because it gives his wives 1st name as Michall:

!2 June 1669. Thomas Dyas and Michall his wife appoint our trustie and welbeloved friends Mr. John Wheston our attornie to acknowledge unto John Quiglye two tracts, 1300 acres lying upon the branches of Nomeny River; the one third part of 1050 acres in partnershipp betweene Mr. John Wheston and Mr. Patrick Spence upon the branches of Rappak. River bounding upon 1200 acres belonging to Lt. John Washington, Mr. David Norry and Mr. Patrick Spence. Signed by Thomas Dyas and Michall Dias. 19 9br [Nov.] 1669. Recorded

I was never able to find anything else about Michall (wife of Thomas DYAS), except I've seen where others have a Thomas Dias/Dyas (abt 1750-1779)married to a Michall 1st or last name who had at least 3 sons: (1)Thomas (1775-1837, md Elizabeth Dillon, had son Richard-1815 to 1870, md Susan Mardis); (2) Richard (abt 1770 York Co., PA-had at least 3 sons, son Andrew b. 1803 PA); (3)Joseph.

I don't know if these researchers have any proof that their Thomas DYAS was married to Michall or if they mistakenly confused the wife of the earlier Thomas DIAS with their later Thomas DIAS.

What is your Thomas DIAS connection?

Sincerely,
April Kyle BLADH

Re: 1669/70 Thomas Dias/Dyas of VA and/or MD gave my ancestor George SOUTH a gift of 70a of land in Westmoreland Co.,VA--what is the relationship?

I still haven't found the connection between Thomas Dias/Dyas and my ancestor George SOUTH. Land gifts usually mean a close connection, but I never found Thomas Dias/Dyas' will to see if there was a connection.

Do you have any additional information or a copy of the Thomas Dias/Dyas' will?

Sincerely,
April Kyle Bladh
