"In the 1600s, English Kings insisted on imposing the Anglican Church on the Presbyterians of Scotland. In
protest approximately three hundred thousand Scots signed the National Covenant of 1638, vowing to defend Presbyterianism from government control. This marked fifty years of bitter struggle between the Convenanters and the Church of England." In 1679, forty-one years later, young John DICK, a recent graduate of the University of Edinburgh, escaped capture after fighting with the Covenanters of Bothwell Bridge. He was later betrayed by a poor woman needing the reward. In the fall of 1683, he was sentenced to death for high treason and imprisoned. He escaped along with 24 other prisoners. He was the only one who was recaptured. While in jail, he wrote a short book which was published after his death. He was hanged at Grassmarket in Edinburgh on March 5, 1684.

As the drums rolled, John DICK proclaimed from the scaffold:
"I am come here this day, and would not change my lot with the greatest in the world. I lay down my life willingly and cheerfully for Christ and His cause, and I heartily forgive my enemies............."

I do not know the parents of John DICK or how he fits in your family history or ours. My husband descends from Julia Dick/Thomas J Fox, grandparents. Julia's father was Hardin DICK and grandfather, Charles DICK.
