Confusion about Dicks in VA

Surnames: Trotter, Dick
I have seen a number of sites and family trees that say different things. I hear that Peter Dick's family either came from Prussia or Chester, England. I wonder if anyone has made heads or tails of this. In a book about Piatt Co., IL history, it says that Jackson Trotter (son of William Trotter and Barbara Dick) come from Irish and German decent. Does this indication mean that the Prussian line might be correct?
