John Dick 1600s Scotland

"In the 1600s, English Kings insisted on imposing the Anglican Church on the Presbyterians of Scotland. In
protest approximately three hundred thousand Scots signed the National Covenant of 1638, vowing to defend Presbyterianism from government control. This marked fifty years of bitter struggle between the Convenanters and the Church of England." In 1679, forty-one years later, young John DICK, a recent graduate of the University of Edinburgh, escaped capture after fighting with the Covenanters of Bothwell Bridge. He was later betrayed by a poor woman needing the reward. In the fall of 1683, he was sentenced to death for high treason and imprisoned. He escaped along with 24 other prisoners. He was the only one who was recaptured. While in jail, he wrote a short book which was published after his death. He was hanged at Grassmarket in Edinburgh on March 5, 1684.

As the drums rolled, John DICK proclaimed from the scaffold:
"I am come here this day, and would not change my lot with the greatest in the world. I lay down my life willingly and cheerfully for Christ and His cause, and I heartily forgive my enemies............."
SOURCE:
ONE YEAR BOOK of CHRISTIAN HISTORY
E Michael and Sharon Rusten, Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. Wheaton, Illinois 2003
(Douglas, JD "National Covenant" NIDCC, pp. 694-695)
Provided for genealogical interest by Gerald Chancellor, teacher/instructor, Leland Seminary, through the RITE, Goshen Baptist Association, Virginia

I do not know the parents of John DICK or how he fits in your family history or ours. My husband descends from Julia Dick/Thomas J Fox, grandparents. Julia's father was Hardin Dick and grandfather, Charles Dick.

Fran

Confusion about Dicks in VA

I have seen a number of sites and family trees that say different things. I hear that Peter Dick's family either came from Prussia or Chester, England. I wonder if anyone has made heads or tails of this. In a book about Piatt Co., IL history, it says that Jackson Trotter (son of William Trotter and Barbara Dick) come from Irish and German decent. Does this indication mean that the Prussian line might be correct?

Do any respondents recognise, or have knowledge of, THOMAS DICK whose abode was given as TANFIELD near EDINBURGH (Scotland), in 1829/1830?
Although Tanfield is listed on several documents it also appears as FAIRFIELD on another, but that is probably a transcription error.
Mr. Dick was possibly a businessman or banker and may have had a connection with Liverpool. He would have been around the age of 40 (plus or minus a few years) in 1829.

David.
Jacob Polt Dick

From the Indiana Weekly Messenger, October 2, 1895
Indiana, Pennsylvania (on the occasion of Jacob Dick's birthday)

Jacob Polt Dick was born in Bedford county September 27, 1828, and came to this county with his parents in 1830. He was united in marriage with Elizabeth Hoover in 1846, and to which union there were born five children. The mother died in 1863 and in 1864 Mr. Dick married his present wife Elizabeth Mack, who bore him 7 children. In 1859 Mr. Dick purchased the farm on which he now resides. The tract consists of over 300 acres and is among the best in the township, and here his twelve children were raised. Shortly after Mr. dick’s first marriage, he started out to make his own way in the world. He purchased what is now the Geo. Ackerson tract of 100 acres and when the papers were signed was able to pay 50 cents on the article. But he was an industrious, hard working man, and worked with head as well as hands and it was not long until Jacob Dick was one of the most ‘fore-handed’ men in the township. He indulged in no wild speculations, but made his money by intelligent labor. He had received a common school education and held many township offices. He was frequently called upon to settle the estates of his deceased neighbors, and he acted in that capacity more frequently than any other man in the county.

The tribute paid him on Friday, by the ingathering of his neighbors to do him honor on his seventy-second anniversary, is one worthily bestowed upon a self-made man, who has assumed his high position in the community by his honest and unimpeachable integrity.
Hello

I am looking fot make contact with someone who can give me further information about research done into the Dick family in Melbourne.

David DICK and Barbara KIRK who emigrated to Victoria from Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland on board the Merchant Prince in 1858 with their family.

Their children were:

Robert (b. 1838), John (b. 1840), Janet (b. betw. 1842 - 45), Mary (abt. 1845) David (abt. 1849), Barbara (b. 1853) and Jack (b. 1855)

Looking at Family Search, there seems to have been a lot research on this family , in particular into descendents of their daughter Barabara who married Joshua Swallow DAFF carried out by Jean Whittle.

I am descended from Janet, who we think emigrated again to NZ. Any contacts and / or details about this line would be gratefully greeted!

Many thanks
KESTON.

John Fulton DICK / Crawford DICK & Ann BAIRD

If this family applies to anyone else, please feel free to contact me, but someone posted a query 10 years ago to the Lanark list re: John Fulton DICK, born 1869, Glasgow, Scotland, and who emigrated to the US. His wife was Agnes CHEAPE. He came over in 1904 and settled in Portland, Oregon. JFD was this person's gf and she was wanting info on her ggp's, Crawford DICK and Ann Anderson BAIRD. I just found this query about 3 weeks ago when I was reading the archives, and the person who submitted it no longer has a valid e-mail address.
I may hold the answers to someone's brickwall. I can open up a whole new line of ancestor data for you if anyone wants it. Ann ANDERSON BAIRD was my 2x great-aunt and my uncle by marriage, Crawford DICK, drowned in a ship's launching that was so horrible that it made the newspapers of the day. A tremendous furor was raised over this tragedy. I am eager to share what I have.

Family stories relate that he and his 2 brothers Tom and Gerry died with fever, causing his father to leave the lower swamp lands of Lowndes and seek land more north, moving to Tallapoosa Co across the river from the Hardy family in Nixburg, Coosa Cowhich he had known in Lowndes. His only child was Mary Ann Elizabeth Meadows who married 1st Robert W. Hardy about 1848 and had 3 sons by him. Mary Meadows, born circa 1809-15, married 23 August 1836-marriage license at Lowndes Cty Courthouse, to Robert L. Dick born in GA, went to AL in the 1830's (land records). Their first two children, Martha and Sarah F. were born in AL. They moved to Union Parish, LA sometime prior to the birth of Ransom Meadows Dick who was born Sept. 24, 1840 in Union Parish. Robert acquired land in Union Parish, farmed and was somewhat influential in the affairs of Union Parish - served on a Police Jury several time, responsible for directing the placement of several roads and bridges in the Parish. Robert was a substantial slave owner according to slave schedules in the county. Family stories (principally from Robert L. Dick's grandson, Robert Ransom Dick who lived and died in AL) is that Robert L. left his family sometime prior to 1860, giving his wife thousands of dollars in gold and 30 slaves to sustain herself and the children. He was in Zandt County, Tx, 1860, showing R.L. Dick, age 51, born GA, listed with William Lauderdale family. Martha and Sarah stayed in Union Parish, but Mary took her young son, Ransom Meadows Dick back to AL to live near her Meadows family. She may have remarried to a Sanders. Nancy Browning Hardy Bankston was also the mother of Mary Ann Elizabeth Hardy who married Milous Meadows and she was the mother of Robert W.
Montgomery T. Dick

I am searching for Montgomery T. (aka M.T.) DICK. He married Myrtle Ann ORNDORFF about 1925-6. He was born about 1883, supposedly in Massachusetts, according to the 1930 Henry County, VA Census, which shows them living in "Bassett Town", "Horsepasture District". He's listed as an "Insurance Salesman" in 1930, living on "River Side Drive".

My problem is, I cannot find him before 1930, it's like he never existed, or changed his name? Anyway, I'd like to at least find out when he died (which was before 1963), & maybe birthdate. I'd love to find out who his family was, though.

On the census, his parents are listed as being born in Newfoundland.

My grandfather had stories about "M.T.", who was quite a character. One such story was that he had a horrible relationship with his mother & sisters (father presumably dead by then). He ran away from home at a somewhat young age, making his way to New York/New Jersey area where he became wealthy eavesdropping on businessmen during their lunches in a local restaurant. He would take the information he'd overheard and get the jump on everyone. As the story goes, he was tracked down by is family after making a lot of money & was harrassed until he gave them as much money as he could so they would leave him alone. He left the area and never went back. As I said, it's just a story...and kind of farfetched if you ask me, but it was a good story.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
*Suzanne*

Obituary: Dick, Dorothy Lois - 100

Dorothy Lois Dick, of Round Top, Texas, died peacefully at home on Sunday, February 4, 2007, at the age of 100 years, 2 months and 8 days. Born on the family farm in Claflin, Kansas in 1906, Dorothy was the daughter of Harry Ray and Lois Ulsh. Her younger years were spent on a farm being raised by her grandmother. Dorothy moved to Hutchinson, Kansas in 1912. It was there that she met and married George Dick on May 10, 1928. She raised their son, James, and supported him in his early years of piano studies. She attended Sandoe Secretarial School and also worked in a mail order department at Pegues-Wright, a leading dry goods store. Mrs. Dick moved to Festival Hill at Round Top, Texas in 1987. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, embroidery, crochet, piano and gardening. Her favorite project was a newsletter that friends around the world looked forward to receiving. Teaching life's lessons, she shared her strong sense of self worth, passion for life and dedication to one's task with a healthy dose of humor. She was a founder of a luncheon group in Round Top called "The Lunch Bunch", which she enjoyed very much. Dorothy Dick loved Festival Hill and was a great ambassador for the Institute which her son founded. Her many friends made through the Institute visited with her at her special seat during the concerts. She has been an amazing delight to an extended family, and it has been a privilege to all who have known her indomitable spirit. She leaves behind friends and family around the world, especially in Europe, Illinois, Kansas, and Texas. Dorothy is survived by one son, James Dick, of Round Top, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Dick, and her sisters, Nina and Zola. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2007, in the Concert Hall at Festival Hill in Round Top, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dorothy Dick Memorial Scholarship Fund, Festival-Institute, P.O .Box 89, Round Top, Texas, 78954.
Hello
I'm trying to trace the final stages of my Great Grandmother's life.
She married Arthur Dick at St Judes in Hull, in 1909.
Arthur Dick (b about 1887 in Hull, Yorkshire), was a son of Charles Edward Dick (b1852, Hull, Yorkshire, occupation: Fish Curer) and Isabella Sanderson (birth year unknown, also of Hull, Yorkshire).
They went onto have five children:
Queenie May HAGER (nee Dick) b 1910 in Myton, Hull
Charles Dick b 1912, Myton, Hull
Lilian GOULD (nee Dick), my grandmother, b 1914 in Myton, Hull
Arthur Dick b 1917, Myton, Hull
Florence Dick (married name unknown), b 1920 in Myton, Hull

Apparently, after the birth of Florence, Elsie was put into a mental asylum and her children were put into care. I can't find a record of her death certificate on the death index, and have no idea about which mental asylum she was put into.

Is anyone out there able to please help me at all?
Many thanks
Rachel

Elizabeth A. Myers of PA.

Edward Dick was born in 1829 in York County, and is the son of George and Mary (Nagle) Dick, of Adams County, Penn., who settled n the property now owned by the son in 1831. The father was engaged in farming and the mercantile business, and during the time the jail was building at York he was commissioner for York County, after which he retired from active business in 1851. He was a progressive farmer and merchant, and a director of the Dillsburgh Bank. He owned about 180 acres of well improved land. In all public affairs he took a lively interest until his death in 1876. His wife survived him only two years. They were members of the Lutheran Church and had seven children: Catherine, Edward, Christian, all living: Lydia Ann (deceased), Elizabeth (deceased), Mary Jane (deceased) and Sarah E. Edward Dick has always been identified with the old homestead. He, like his father, is one of the most progressive business men of the township. He owns 230 acres of improved land, and about 100 acres of mountain land. Besides farming he is engaged in the mercantile business, owns a grist and saw mill, and since 1853 has been postmaster at Clear Spring. He has been school director for nine years. January 22, 1857, he married Elizabeth A. Myers, of Adams County, who, like himself, is a member of the Lutheran Church. They have four children: John H., George W., Charles E., James A. (deceased) and Lottie M., some of whom are already assisting their father on the farm, in business and in the mill.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor

Mystery wife of William Henry Dick of Houston, Texas c. 1900

Right now I am just trying to track down the name of W. H. Dick's wife and the name of his other son... W. H. Dick is my husband's paternal grandfather's father. One of his sons (my husband's grandfather) was William Henry Dick, Jr. who married Joy Lindsey in 1933 in (I think) Greenville, Texas. I think the other son was named Cecil, but that could be totally wrong. I have a picture of W. H. with both grown sons from maybe the mid to late 1930's. I also have a picture of both grown sons with their respective wives from the same time. Any help identifying this granduncle and elusive great-grandmother would be vastly appreciated.

Edward Dick of Penn.

Edward Dick

Mr. Dick was a prosperous farmer, and was worth considerable money. He is survived by his wife and 12 children, eight sons and four daughters. The funeral services, conducted by Rev Stahl, were held on Friday afternoon. Interment was made in the Manor graveyard.

Levi Wiley Durden Newton Co., GA associated with Dick family

Levi Wiley Durden b:1850, d:1912. He is somehow related to the DICK family. Is living in home of James Dick in 1860 and 1870 in Newton Factory area, I assume an orphan and most likely grandson or something to James Dick. There is an old cemetery there known as the Durden/Dick cemetery (that no one can locate today) I have plenty of info on his descendants, but am lost as to parents of Levi Wiley Durden and sister Mary b: about 1848. Levi md. Mary Lizzie Ozburn, and they lived in Newton and Jasper Counties in GA until their death in 1912 from a tornado

I am stuck! Looking for origin and parentage for my great grandmother that I never got to meet. She married John Lester Johnson. They had children named Leo, Joseph, Blanche, and Mary Serena Johnson. Looking for any Dick or Johnson descendants to email me or anyone that can help me with information. My grandmother was Mary Serena Johnson and she was born in 1894, in Utica, Oneida, NY. Blanche married Burton Packard. Leo never married, and Joseph married and had lots of children. I think they may have lived around the Syracuse, or East Syracuse area of NY. I do not even know where any of these people are buried other than my grandmother, but I wasn't raised around her either due to a divorce of my parents.
