Looking for parents of Christopher Dicken (d1788)

I see that some have traced the Dicken line back pretty far. I am looking for the parents of Christopher Dicken who married Sarah Pulliam abt 1749, and who died in Culpeper Co, VA in 1778.
Is there any actual proof that anyone knows of for his parents? (Unsourced family trees don't count.) Are there any documents that prove or disprove an Isaac Dicken as his father? Is there any proof that Amos Dicken (b abt 1744) is related?
I would love to hear if anyone knows of any church, probate, land court or other records that could help.
Sandy

The best suggestion is to study the evidence. Is it from primary sources or secondary sources? Has anyone applied for the DAR or SAR for Amos? They would have had to supply sufficient proof of their facts. The internet is full of false information and I believe that you have to obtain sufficient proof or at least mention the source where you obtained the fact to eliminate any confusion.

Amos Dicken b. 1744 m. Dorcas Hendrix - HELP!! Need help verifying data!!

I am trying to put together the data on the Amos Dicken family...but I am 100% L.O.S.T.!!!!

I am not directly connected to this family (one line off)...but I have data in my records that is apparently not correct...and I need to fix it!! I have spent the last 2 days trying to figure out where I am wrong and where the records on the internet are correct...and I am just not getting it. Every single record I come across has information that contradicts the record before it and I just don't know where to turn next!! I tried to find the reference that is sourced in some of these records "Descendents of Amos Dicken and Dorcas Hendrix", but cannot locate it anywhere!!

Does anyone know where there is a reliable source for data on this family? I thought I found one on FamilyTreeMaker, but that person, while their records are extensive, show Amos with two different fathers, some of his children with two different names, several different birth dates and some children in one record, while those same children not appearing in others.

I really want to make sure my records are accurate and while I am not foolish enough to think they will be complete, I don't want to continue to have wrong information.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!! Thank you very, very much!!!

Thomas and Amos Dicken

Hello, Dickens researchers! I'm descended from Amos Dicken through his son Jesse's daughter Priscilla (c. 1811-1891), who married Archibald Casteel Perdew (1812-1868). The connections between these families go much deeper, though. Archibald Perdew's grandfather William had four children who married Dickens, and his (William's) sister Mary married Thomas Dicken, who was, I believe, the brother of Amos. All records I have show Amos and Thomas descended from James (or John), Isaac, and Christopher, who lived in Virginia prior to their move to PA. The Perdews lived in Maryland before moving to PA, and Mary Perdew married Thomas Dicken in Harford County, MD in 1769. Why was he in Eastern Maryland, and what is the connection between these families? Also, is Thomas and Mary Dicken's daughter Keziah the same Keziah Dicken who married James Perdew, son of Mary's brother William? I have lots of 2nd cousin marriages in these families, but this would be the first 1st cousin marriage I've seen.

Ervin Dicken d. 1917 in Maryland and/or Lewis Clayton Dicken b. 1906 d. 1917 in Maryland - Help!

I am trying to find ANY information on the above father and son! From one family tree on ancestry.com, it appears that Bessie Viola Elliott, daughter of James Elliott and Mary Leasure (or Leysure), was possibly first married to Ervin Dicken and had a son, Lewis Clayton Dicken b. 1906 in Maryland. From what I have been able to gather, both Ervin and Lewis died in 1917 in Maryland - likely somewhere around Mount Savage, Allegany County - which is where Bessie was living in 1900. I am quite confused over the next set of circumstances...because by 1910 Bessie has moved to Utah and has married Alva Monroe Hardinger. It does not appear she ever became a Mormon - so it is unclear what took her to Utah...or why she would leave her child. Apparently, her son, Lewis, is found in the 1910 census living with Bessie's mother, Mary Ann (Leasure) Elliott.

I can find absolutely NO record of either of these two people. There is no record online of the deaths of either Ervin or Lewis in 1917 - however, I may not be able to access the full records from where I live. I cannot locate an Ervin Dicken in ANY census records from 1880 to 1920...the one family tree indicates he was born in 1878, which would match with Bessie's age. The only place where Lewis appears is in the 1910 census in Maryland.

I would appreciate ANY help at all with this family! If anyone can shed any light on who Ervin's parents are, it would be a great help to me in figuring out this family line! Also if anyone can help me to understand what happened to these two people, I would love to know how they died? It would be a plus to know why Bessie left and went to Utah and left her son in Maryland - did she divorce her husband? Was she planning on sending for her son? Something seems very strange here!

Thank you so much for any help.

Hello, my name is Walter Smith and I live in the Dallas TX area. Ab(Absalom) Dicken is the brother of my g-grandfather Allen Dicken. Their dad was the subject above(Thomas Jefferon and Mary Marlow Dicken). Absolom was born in 1845 or thereabouts because the 1860 Clinton County KY census shows him to be 15 years old and Allen was 23 at the time. I have a list of their other siblings if you need them. My email address is wjsatkauf@yahoo.com. Allen's son Thomas Alonzo(my grandfather) migrated to Texas in 1910. My mother(Estelle) was born in 1929 and I was born in 1950. If that helps you, I'm glad. Respectfully, Walt.

Jim,

I think you will find that the Dicken/Dickens have been active in most of the armed forces even to the 1600's. Christopher Dicken came to VA in the 1600's and died in Gloucester Co, VA in 1714.

I have also attached a photo that was taken at Arlington Cemetery. It was quite appropriate this Christmas season to remember and recognize all our veterans that have fought for this country.

Brett

Brett, I forgot to mention most of what I have on Jonathan came from Linda Heilman, she sent me 12 pages of descendants from Jonathan down, but the main heading is as follows : 1600 - 2000 Four hundred years of the Dicken Family in America, concentrating on the PA and OH branch, written by Jim Peirce. (this is just a fragment of it) Now on the first page it starts of course with Jonathan, but it reads like this Jonathan Randolph Dicken8,(Amos7,James6,Christopher Isaac5,Christopher4,Christopher3, Myles2,Richard 1,) now I've never seen this book, but apparently this fellow has gone quite far back, so you may want to check and see if you can locate a copy of this, it may be a great help to you, I don't know why if he had the info, he didn't start with Myles and work down to Jonathan, but thought I'd pass this on, I do believe I still have a whole copy of the thing in this pc, so if your interested, send me your email addy, and I'll get you a copy of what I have including an ophan court document they sent to me as well pretaining to Jonathans estate. my email is poptom@verizon.net
thank you
jean

Jean,

My line is Jonathan and ( ) Mary Dicken to Charles and Keziah (Perdew) Dicken to Adam and Elizabeth (Stahl) Dicken to John Jacob and Florence Minerva (Spink) Dicken to Charles William and Pearl (Dicken) Dern to Barrett Fink and Marvel Rose (Dern) Brown. They were my parents.

Most of my Dicken line could use better documentation. I would like to file a supplemental application to S.A.R. thru Amos but would have to get better sources. In order to trace Amos line up I would have to get in touch with York Co, PA for the verification of his birth to James and Ann from VA. There are substantial sources for James's line up to Christopher and Agnes in the VA records.

Thanks for the offer for info on James F. and Sarah but I am trying to collect the line up and wish I had the time to do a descendancy of Amos.

Brett

Hi Brett, your right, I had to dig out my files, haven't worked this line in awhile. I don't have a maiden name for Mary either, but do have Amos as Jonathans father, and Dorcas as his mother, I've not gone past these folks. My hubby descends from Jonathan, to Jesse & Mary Donahue, to James F Dicken and Sarah Darling. If I can help you with that branch, be glad to. And thanks for the tip on the VA Dicken's, I'd appreciate the location of the info you found linking them, I wonder if it's proved out ? Anyway, I have a ton of info on James F Dicken and photo's of him and Sarah if you'd like, contact me at poptom@verizon.net
many thanks
jean

Jean,

It looks like your Jonathan Dicken was the son of Amos Dicken of Bedford Co, PA. I have Jonathan with wife Mary but don't have her last name.

Have you ever run across the parents of Amos Dicken (1744-1823)? I ran across a posting that had his parents as James and Ann (Lowe) Dicken of Kingston Parish, Middlesex Co, VA. James was born there in 1710 and his line goes back to Christopher and Agnes Dicken of Gloucester Co, VA. Christopher died there in 1714. Any help on this lineage?

Brett

Hi Grant, thanks for the reply, I have found the info needed on Edward Dicken, but very strange is your dicken/spitzer connection, I descend the spitzer line, but my branch seems to come from NY, through Garrett Spitzer not the same branch as your well known VA Spitzers. my hubby's family is the Dicken branch. The dicken line for us, came from Bedford PA,/England, through Jonathan and Mary Dicken.
if your connected to this branch of the Dicken, then we can definately share info.
jean
Solomon Ray sued Richard Dicken in 1806 in Clarke co Ga and Robert Echols sued Richard Dicken about the same time. Robert Echols was the son of Milner Echols who was married to Susannah Sansom. Richard Dicken was married to a Sansom. Milner Echols's father was married to a Palmer. Solomon Ray married Jane eChols in 1796 in Wilkes co Ga. I am trying to find why Solomon Ray sued Richard Dicken in Clarke co Ga. I am also trying to find who Jane echol's parents were. Do any of these name sound like names you might have seen in your research? Thanks,Ross
