Greetings,
I would like very much to have a copy of the material L.S. Dickert organized. I just finished reading "A Dance with Death" by Col. D.A. Dickert - and it has seriously stirred my interest in my family lineage.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

L. H. Dickert, Jr.

This is totally bogus. Yes, Jacob Dickert had no sons. He did have a daughter but none of her children took the name of Dickert.

Jacob Dickert did not almost go bankrupt. He had a large operation.

There is no documentation and there are NO EXAMPLES of a DECKARD rifle. There are no occupations listed as gunsmith in VA census. This is all wishful thinking. The person who started all this is unwilling to share his information with the world and that is because he has none.

Well, believe it or not, we are related by marriage! Ruth Senn was married to my great, great uncle, Forest Dickert. Joann is my cousin! I see her every time I get to Newberry. My family owns the house next door to her where Ruby Dickert Trice used to live (Forest's sister). I used to visit Aunt Ruth and Uncle Forest each time I went to Newberry as a child. They were the dearest, kindest, and most sweet couple. How does Ruth play in to your family?!

I have a ton of Dickert information on Forest's side. I don't know if you need anything on his side or not. Let me know. I'd be happy to help.

If I can help you in any way, please feel free to email me. My personal email address is cackyschmidt@gmail.com.

Re: Dickert Family of Bucks County and Lehigh County, PA

After checking around some more, it appears that the the older John Dickert of Milford Twp. and his wife were probably born no later than the 1750's and were therefore too old to be the parents of the John who was born c. 1799.

A more likely candidate might be Peter Dickert/Dickart/Deckert, who appears on the 1810 and 1820 censuses in Nockamixon Twp. and the 1830 census in Milford Twp. Putting those censuses together, it appears that Peter was born in the early 1760's and his wife probably in the early 1770's. They seem to have had 5 sons and 3 daughters, with the oldest son born in 1795/1800 and the two youngest in 1811/15.

That would mean they could have easily been the parents of both John and Jacob -- as well as of Joseph Dickert of Springfield Twp., who was born c. 1812.

Given that Peter wound up in Milford Twp., I would guess he was a close relative of the oldest John Dickert -- most likely a younger brother. But, of course, all of this is highly speculative unless wills or church records can be found to back it up.
Re: Dickert Family of Bucks County and Lehigh County, PA

I have been researching the Dickert family on behalf of a young friend who is the great-great-grandson of William Dickert's daughter, Mary Jane.

By a process of elimination, I have become fairly certain -- although I cannot prove -- that William was the son of John and Sarah Dickert of Richland Twp., Bucks County. John was born in 1799/1800 and Sarah in 1809/10, and they appear on the censuses from 1840 to 1870.

In 1840, John has 6 sons -- one aged 10-14, three aged 5-9, and two aged 0-4. Just three of those sons were still living with them in 1850 -- Ernest (19), John R. (17), and Benjamin (10) -- plus a daughter, Sarah Ann (8). Benjamin was still living with his parents in 1860 and 1870, and in 1870 John R. was living very near by.

That leaves three sons missing. In 1850, two young Dickerts were living with the family of Joseph Geisinger in Milford Twp. -- Daniel (16) and William (14). I believe that they were two of John's "missing" sons and that Thomas, who you identify as William's brother, was the third.

Further, on the 1880 census Daniel Dickert appears on the same page for Richland Twp. as the younger John Dickert, suggesting they were likely to have been brothers.

Putting all the census data together, that gives a perfect match to the ages in the 1840 listing:

Ernest (1830/31)
Daniel (Sep 1832)
John R. (1833)
William (Apr 1835)
Thomas (1836/37)
Benjamin (1839/40)

As for the elder John Dickert, he seems likely to have been the son of a still earlier man of the same name, who appears on Milford Twp. tax rolls from 1779-87 and censuses from 1790-1810. His last name appears variously as Dickard, Deckard, Dickerd, Tickerd, Fridkerd, Dickert, Deckert, and Dickherd. He married Elizabeth Boyer, daughter of Andrew Boyer, before 1784, and she was still alive in 1820.

John and Elizabeth may also have been the parents of Jacob Dickert (b. 13 Jul 1800) of Milford and Springfield Twps.

I have compiled an extensive biography of Jacob Dickert. He had a daughter, but there is no record that he had any sons. However, there is the possibility that the daughter's son took the Dickert name rather than that of his father. The father was in business partnership with Jacob Dickert. As a gunmaker, Jacob Dickert was a respected gunsmith who almost went bankrupt due to over contracting after the Rev. War. But all the ample published records of the time and shortly thereafter show that Deckards made the Deckard Rifle in the southwestern mountains. Also, both Daniel Boone and George Rogers Clark had rifles made by Deckards in southwestern Virginia. The resources are matters of public record.

Death unknown, but was still alive in 1930 age 71.He is the one that I can trace to moving to Lehigh County, Salisbury Twp. Ephriam married Minnie Ida Larash, daughter of James W. Larash and Fietta Roeder. Minnie was born April 1866. She was still living in 1930 age 63. They had only 3 children, James, Leo born 7, Feb 1896, died Jul 1962, Helen A. born September 1890, died unknown.

Ephriam's father was William Dickert born abt 1835. William and his wf Sarah had 8 children that I know of:
Ephriam July 1857
Henry May 1860
William Abt 1861
Mary Abt 1864
Morris Abt 1866
John ABT 1867
Edwin ABT 1879
Sarah Feb 1870
Ephriam is the first one I found to have moved to Lehigh County.
William also had a brother, Thomas Dickert born abt 1837. Thomas married Lovina, they had:
Charles Abt 1859/1860
Harrison Abt 1863
Thomas Abt 1869
Eliza Abt 1875 Married first (last name Strong), then 2nd
Jacob T.

Dot: Thank you SO MUCH for your reply!! I would appreciate your information you have on the Dickert family and especially locations. I put in my query the name of the children of Christopher Dickert and Christine. Do you have any more information about their children? Christine or Christina was the dau of (Wm) Henry Kesler (at times, it is spelled Keisler, Kessler, I spell mine Keasler) - and sometimes in the same document!! (Wm) Henry Kesler, d. and his will is in Newberry Co. SC, 1802. One of my Keasler "cousins" went into the DAR on him. (Wm) Henry Kesler was a messenger soldier under Col. Wm Preston, in Botetourt Co. VA in the Rev War. His first land transaction was in Craven Co SC, 24 Oct 1786, Book E, pg 137. He is shown in the 1790 Census as Henry Kessler, living in Orangeburg Dist. SC, which later became Newberry Co. SC. He had 9 other children, not including Christine or Christina. My branch of the family adopted the spelling of Keasler.
Again, thank you so much. Looking forward to working with you.
Hi Barbara!
Have read your messages and I have a question for you. Is your information from Yancy Dickert's book "A History and Genealogy of Peter Dickert of South Carolina" ? I am James W. Dickert's GGGrandaughter and I wrote to Yancy about the family of Adam P. Dickert and about James W. Dickert being a part of that family. He said in his reply that there had been no hard evidence to connect the two but that he felt that there was definitely a connection somehow. In searching for more evidence to back this theary up I have come up empty handed. I am now focusing my search on where James W. Dickert was in GA. in the 1850 census, two years before his marriage to Janie Nix. I am also working on finding more information on the family of George W. Dickert who is in Randolph Co. Al. in the 1880 census. If I could find Bible or Church records or a Dickert will that mentioned James W. Dickert or even a trail or sign of him living in GA. in the 1850's I would be more than pleased. There has to be some evidence of this family and where it came from somewhere. Will post again if anything turns up.
Vicki

I am looking for anyone with any info on my great grandfather's family. His name was Wyche Dickert. Born in Prosperity, sometime in the late 1890s. He married Blanche Dickert of Newberry. I have an entire book for her side of the family (going back to the 1700s when Peter came from Europe to settle in Newberry Co), but I do not have any info on Wyche's parents, grand parents, etc. We believe he and Blanche were distant cousins. His family does not appear in my Dickert family book, so this is why we believe they were of a separate line. Anyone with any info, please email. I would love to have more info on his side of the family.

My father was adopted in marriage by Homer Virgil Dickert, Jr in Oklahoma in the early 1940's. He and my grandmother have both passed on, and I can find no clues or links to any other Homer Dickert family. Since my grandfather was a Jr., I did locate through the SSDI records Homer Sr. He was born in 1909 and buried in Oconee, SC in 1974. The cemetery records has him buried "just outside Wallace J. Dickert" with a "single headstone". There are numerous Dickert's buried in the same cemetery, but I cannot find a common link. Other names include: Edward Wallace, Mary Margaret, Harry Michael, James Alston, Rosa Lee, Rossie B., Ruby Lee, Sandra Jean, Wallace J. and Wallace L., all surnames Dickert.
I am unable to find birth, marriage or any other type of info on either my grandfather or great-grandparents, so I was hoping someone might recognize these names.
Thanks for any info!
Dana Dickert Blakelock

This family doesn't seem to connect to any previously discussed, but they connect to my research, so i post it here for whoever might find and connect to it:

from the 1880 NYC census
John Dickert(age 42), from Hesse - Durmstadt, Married to:
Amelia J.(36), born in Prussia
with children:
Charles S. (13)
Kate H. (11)
John G. (8)
Christianna (6)
Louis K. (1)

I know they also later had a daughter Rowena.( born about 1890)
Kate married Frank B DeBold, and it is their descendants who I am primarily interested in. If anyone can use this, enjoy. If you have ANY info on the DeBold-Dickert union and descendants, please contact me, thank you.

(please put the family surnames in the title)

Dickert and Deckard rifles

Can you tell me where you've found any record of rifles made in southwestern Virginia and called "Deckard" rifles?

I have found the Lancaster, Pennsylvania, gunsmith, Jacob Dickert, to have been an historical person--in the sense that there are records of his existence.

But I haven't found any mention in any historical record of Deckard rifles made in Virginia.

The use of the name Deckard in referring to some long rifles seems to have appeared out of nowhere sometime in the 19th century. (Even Winston Churchill referred to them in a work of fiction in 1904.)

Since Jacob Dickert apparently put his name on the barrels of most, if not all, of his rifles, I wonder where the Deckard spelling came from. Is it supposed to be another gunsmith? Or, is it referring to rifles assembled by someone else, using barrels manufactured by Jacob Dickert? (If the latter, couldn't they look at the barrel and see how the name was spelled?)

Also, in case you haven't come across it, there's an article about the rifle at the Alamo, indicating that the rifle's barrel may have been manufactured by Jacob Dickert, but the rifle itself was pieced together in the 1920s from parts of several rifles for display purposes:
Guns Magazine, January 2004, http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_1_50/ai_1...
"In San Antonio's Alamo museum, visitors can view an old flintlock rifle with brass patchbox and barrel markings strongly suggesting a specific 19th century gunsmith, Jacob Dickert, as being the maker of the rifle. This display rifle, according to the museum curator, was re-constructed in the 1920s by a local gunsmith using various parts donated by many Texans, and reported to come from rifles once used at the Alamo. This rifle makes a powerful statement that Dickert rifles were used by at least one of the Alamo's defenders."

I saw your post and the reference to the Notton name. My wifes mother's maiden name was Notton and she came from Ashland, Wisconsin.

In talking to a living Aunt we talked about one of the Notton's being married to a Dickert. In fact, there is a living Dickert relative that I spoke to at his home in Ashland, WI.

I need to look through my notes to get that information. It does sound like there is a connection here.

I am trying to find any information about the Notton family. I have included more information about the oldest ancestor that we know about. Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to find information on Frank Monte Notton who lived in the Ashland, Wisconsin area in the late 1800's and died in Ashland around 1902. Family information indicates he may have been born in South Dakota. So far census information has not been a help.

He was born on May 15, 1849 and died on June 25, 1902.

He married Sarah Alcock who was born in Canada and also died in Ashland, Wisconsin. She was born on August 8, 1855 and died on Jan. 16, 1916.

Any help would be greatly apprecitated.
Hi Adam,
The Dickert Rifle at the Alamo was made by Jacob Dickert. I called the curator of the Alamo Museum and learned that the Dickert Rifle on display there was not used in the Battle of the Alamo. It was just placed there for effect. I have done a comparison of the Dickert Rifle made in Pennsylvania and the Deckard Rifle made in southwestern Virginia. Both are "long rifles" of the 1700's.
Ron

After years of personal research, I have found that the Deckard Rifle made in Virginia is a historical fact and that it was made by Deckards and various copy-cat gunmakers - to the point that it became generic.. I also found that there is little to back-up the claim that Jacob Dickert's Rifles were used at the Battle of the Alamo. The compilation of my thorough research of existing records should leave no doubt that the Deckard Rifle was indeed made by Deckards and copy-cats in the southwestern mountains of the American Colonies - long before the American Revolutionary War. My compilation also has a list of the rifles used at the Alamo. It's an eye-opener.
Ron E. Deckard
