I met your grandmother when I was passing though in June 2005. She was very nice to me, and I took photos of what Merwyn had in his albums. I can explain a lot of them to you if they are confusing. Please give your mother my regards. I was so fortunate to be able to go to her house and visit with her on a moment's notice. I had spoken with your grandfather on the phone a very long time ago after I had written to him. He sent me a lot of information including "the letter" William had written to Olive/Clara. I have been looking for some mention of Carl and Martha Schultz who first took Olive in before the Purdy's adopted her. I was hoping that Carl was Otillie Schultz' brother. There is a Will of Carl's somewhere that may indicate other family members. I just can't remember where I saw a mention of it. I am happy to learn that you are now interested in taking up where your grandfather left off. You and I are first cousins twice removed. Write to me at ox@silcom.com.
Dorothy

Merwyn was my grandfather!! I can't believe I found a connection!! This part of the family tree is very scetchy, all I have is what little info my grandfather left behind and some very confusing stories that my grandmother shares with me. I am trying to build as much of my family tree as I can. I just figured out last night, by readying what you had posted, that George was a Dickhaut and he had William and William had Clara and Clara then had my grandfather. The Lieberkneckt connection was really getting confusing but I think I have some of it figured out. I would really love to see what you have or hear any stories. I don't have much more then what I have said but my grandmother is going to look in her safe for more pages. My grandfather had done a lot of research but mostly the Henderson side. I had two pages of confused info regarding Purdy, Lieberknecht, Dickhaut/Dickout, Schutz. Please let me know if there is any information that would help me. Thank you!!!

Cari, Yes, this is the right connection. William was my grandfather. He was a very naughty man. . .never raising any of his children. Love 'em and leave 'em was his style. My mother and her sister were the last of William's 4 or 5 children. Clara was his first. What do you know about William? Do you have any other contacts like John E. Peiffer, III? I have already sent him a lot of information. Are you related to Merwyn Henderson?

Cecilie,
Do you know or can you guess what happened to Charles/Carl Dickhaut? Did he go to Omaha? And, do you have evidence of Herman's birth in PA in 1872? In what county was he born.

Dorothy

Cecilie,
I just recently in May this year found Charles and Ottilie Dickhaut in the 1870 NJ Census using Ancestry.com (or was it Genealogy.com?). Thank you for your reply. I had always wondered what had happened to Hermann. Do you know what happened to Agnes, his sister? What happened to Charles/Carl Dickhaut? This is a breakthrough! Thanks again.

Dorothy, I don't know if this will reach you since it's been several years since your two queries, but I believe I know the answer. I find a Charles Dickhaut, age 26, W M, laborer born in Germany, both parents of foreign birth, in the 1870 census of Winslow, Camden Co., NJ (Berlin P.O.), p. 135, 398/367, lines 17-19. His wife is Oteliee, 22, F W, Keeps House, born in Germany, both parents of foreign birth. With them is William, age 1, M W, born in (can't tell for sure, perhaps NY or NJ), both parents of foreign birth. I can email you a jpeg of this page as an attachment. The family's son Herman, born in 1872 in PA, was the father of a Frederick B. Dickhaut, who, for a short time was my mother's stepfather. In researching Fred I found your query and realized it must concern the same family. Fred married Hattie Zimprich in 1915 in Grant or Hooker Co., NE. Hattie died in Hooker Co. in Nov. 1916, after giving birth to their daughter, who also died. Hattie left two little girls (Iona and Alma Ruby) by her previous marriage to Charles Harvey Dobias (who used the last name of Dempsey, for some reason). She had divorced Charles. The girls were sent to the Nebraska Children's Home Society and adopted by two different families, who changed their names to Barbara Jane McCaw and Elizabeth Martin. Fred went to Omaha, where he apparently lived for the rest of his life until 1969. He was age 22 when he married Hattie, who was 37.

Carolyn,
No, this is not familiar. I have absolutely no information on this Dickhaut. All I know is that this Dickhaut is the father of my grandfather, William Carl (nee Dickhaut) Lieberknecht, the adopted name. William's mother was Ottilie Schultz Dickhaut. His siblings (father's name Dickhaut) were Agnes and Hermann. William was born in Trenton, NJ in 1869. Siblings were born a few years later, one maybe in PA. Mr. Dickhaut disappears as Mrs. then shows up in Omaha in 1875 married to Mr. Liberknecht there. No marriage, death or census records can be found for Mr. Dickhaut, or birth records for the children can be found for my William or his siblings. I have hit a brick wall for this man. My info comes from a letter from William to his first child wherein he states "their name is William Carl Jacob Dickhaut." This is all he says about his father's name. Good luck in your search.
