Re: DICKIE, Hector b. IRL > SC m. Sarah

I would suggest looking for Hector Junior's birth registration in Jamaica, West Indies (possibly Clarendon)as many refugees from Charleston were evacuated there (often via St. Augustine, Florida). Economic conditions there were not good (the bottom fell out of the sugar market) at that time and the planters already there did not offer much in the way of support to the refugees.

Other refugees went straight to Nova Scotia (which included New Brunswick at the time) and may have written to friends and/or relatives about the better conditions there.

It is possible that Hector and family tried to return to Ninety-Six (the treaty included a clause returning confiscated property to loyalists...we all know how that turned out), were not welcomed with open arms and decided to head north. Trying to settle on Long Island after the war would have been out of the question for a loyalist.

Information I received (unfortunately the contact vanished with a dead hard drive) by email gave the following. I'll just include info about the war years.

Children:
Robert-b 3 Jan 1780, d 26 June 1780 both at Ninety-Six, SC

Margaret-b 13 Nov 1783, d 17 Mar 1783 both at Charlestown SC

Elizabeth-g 10 Apr 1784, Jamaica, West Indies d 9 Jan 1861 Blenheim, Canada West married Henry Rupert

William-b 11 Feb. 1786, Clarendon, Jamaica, West Indies

Hector Jr. b 4 Sept 1787, Clarendon, Jamaica, West Indies

Sarah-b 4 Feb 1789, Jamaica

Andrew b 17 June 1793, New Brunswick

This suggests that Hector left Ninety-Six after the seige-The Loyalists in the Siege of Fort Ninety Six by Bobby Gilmer Moss has him there, and also serving with Patrick Ferguson at the Battle of King's Mountain, we're lucky he survived as the loyalist forces suffered a severe defeat. (Google "The Seige of Fort Ninety-Six" or "Battle of King's Mountain" and you should get lots of information.)and went to Charleston where, according to pay records he collected as a second class refugee while being paid as quarter master to refugees. Probably left Charlestown when it was evacuated in December 1782 and eventually reached Jamaica, West Indies where he stayed until sometime after February 1789 when he left arriving in New Brunswick before June 1793.

Two children dying in infancy during the war suggests the difficult situation loyalists in SC faced.

Daughter Elizabeth who was born in Jamaica married Henry Rupert. Christopher and Frederick Rupert (or Rubert) settled in Ninety Six about 1764, both served as loyalists and evacuated to Nova Scotia (New Brunswick)with their families (Frederick died en route). My list of Hector's children includes Rupert as a possible name instead of the Robert born and died in 1780 and suggests a family connection.

I'm descended from Susanna (or Susan), Hector's youngest child.

More food for thought.

Alex Lawrence

I am so sorry to hear of your dad's passing and would appreciate complete dates if possible.I hope that we can keep in touch.
As to how we are related ..well that could get a bit complicated since I am related to your dad twice...once through my Mom and once through my Dad. Jamesina(Shearer) Dickie's grandfather and my 3rd great grandfather(on my Dad's side) were brothers. My Mom's great grandfather was their nephew. These three were part of the original five who emigrated from Scotland. It's actually kind of funny but I grew up in the house that was originally owned by one of your uncles on the Burnett side so can sort of fill you in on the Burnetts too if you are interested. Judging from the initials in your email address I am guessing that you are the eldest of your fathers family and would be very interested in getting an update on your dad's family.
Please contact me at shearerfamilytree@3web.com. I have lots to tell....

Hello there!
The only other details I am aware of is that my grandfather Oswald was born in Aberdeen in 1911. I found Canadian records that indicate he immigrated to Canada at age 17 on Mar 27, 1927. He went to Montreal where he joined the Canadian Army (Royal Canadian Army Service Crops in those days) and was later posted to Toronto in 1947.
I am very interested to know if he had siblings, who they were, where they are, and of course if there are descendants. My mother is an only child and so she would love to know if she has any relations and learn more about the family. Oswald died when she was only 9 years of age, so she has no family information or contacts whatsoever.
Thanks so much,
Lisa

He eventually took up lots 22 and 23 on Dickie Mountain at Norton. He had 500 acres of land. He and his wife had 13 Children between 1776 and 1801... Hector was 64 years old when Susannah (the last one) was born in 1801."

The Children were: 1. Jane-Born Dec. 17, 1776;
2. Susannah- Born march 31, 1809*,, went to Ontario 1830.

(Note;*This does not agree with the 1801 date suggested elsewhere. One also wonders why Children #10-#13 are not listed in the source in the order in which they were born as the earlier children had been listed,)

Hector Dickie Sr., was a Captain in South Carolina militia and had served with Thomas Walker, who was the father - In - Law of Hector Jr.

"Hector Dickie (note; Senior), Henry Pearce, Jonathon Chipman, John Sherwood,Richard Bedel, Francis Pickel(sic), John Dorrington Jr., Philip Honsinger, Cornelius Ackerson(Note:Ackermon) and Noah Pangborn" in Sept 1798 sent a request to "To his excellency Thomas Carleton Esquire Lieut. Governor and Commander in Chief of the Province of New Beunswick" to grant a request of 400 acres each "toPromote the settlement of this infant Province as well as the maintenance of their several Families" who have resided on the "Rear of a Grant to Studholme Barton and Others." In December 1809 "Dec 11 John Innes and 41 others receive a grant on the Kennebecasis River. Henry Pearce, Hector Dickie senior, Hector Dickie junior, Francis Pickle..etc."

Hector Senior in 1810 was a vestryman at Christ Church and "Pew #4 on the North Side of the Church sold to Hector Dickie for 6 pounds 17."

Hector Dickie Jr. held a commission and severed his King and country as Ensign in New Brunswick during the War of 1812. Hector Junior and his wife Ann/Anne sold property in the Parish of Norton in late Dec., 1815, In 1827 Hector Jr. purchased "that tract or parcel of land the property of the said William Pearce, Bequeathed to him by his Father Henry Pearce Deceased... being in the General Grant on the North side of Baxter's Grant.."

Hector Dickie Jr. who had been Born in Jamaica, Long Island, New York Sept. 4, 1787, died at the age of 88 years on May 8, 1875 in Ontario. Anne Walker, his wife, had been born in New Brunswick in 1789. She died 82 years later (may 21, 1871); she is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Brantford, ON.

In 1814 Hector Jr. and Ann had three sons-John Walker Dickie, Isaac Walker Dickie, Hiram Walker Dickie.
It is not known when the family left our area for Ontario. (Note; I have seen both 1830 and 1837 as dates; he appears to have been here when his father died in 1837.) We do know the first son was born 13 Dec. 1817 at Norton" and married "10 Nov. 1839 at Springfield, N. B. to Maria Augusta Jones, born 1816, at Springfield, died 26 Aug 1850 at Bishopsgate" in Ontario.

Stanley Dickie's letter of 1970 to the Hampton Museum tells us "Hector Senior, his wife and Hector Junior were preparing to come to Ontario. However, Hector Senior contracted blood poisoning from a darning needle left in his sock and died at Norton (Note:Parish) May 5, 1837 in his 100th year. His wife Sarah, and Hector his son, who is my ancestor, with his three sons Isaac,John Walker and Hiram made the trip up through the canals along the Great Lakes in 1837. I have a diary describing their trip written in 1837 by Hector Junior. Hector Senior's wife Sarah is buried here in a little family plot in Brant County, but the bottom of the stone is missing so I don't know how old she was or when she was born."

(Source: The Dickie/ Dickey" File, Kings County Museum, Hampton,NB; the "Walker" File,Kings County Museum; "The Parish of Christ Church,Norton,New Brunswick" by J.E. Hoyt, 1961)

(Note; Was the mountain named for Hector Dickie Sr. or one of his offspring, or for a later generation? I have seen it Written form, and heard in Conversation, the term Dickie's Mountain", but to most people it is "Dickie Mountain", even though I have seen "Cochrane Mountain" on a map.)

(Note; It may be interest to record here that Francis Pickle, became (1811) the first deacon in the local baptist congregation. He in 1824, was ordained as its pastor. In 1799 he had married a Miss Jane Dickie. They had a Grant of land on Dickie Mountain. In the Lower Baptist Cemetery, where the first Baptist meeting House stood, a stone can still be seen that reads; Hector Dickie Pickle son of Francis & Jane Pickle died 13 Dec. 1805 age 3 yrs 9 mos 26 days". He is thought to be the first burial in that Cemetery; the second was Elder James Innis, the first pastor of the church... Information from "Hats and Coats-A History of the Central Norton United baptist Church, 1800-2000" by David G. Keirstead,2000. Prior to his involvement with the church, Francis Pickle was a inkeeper. We read--"Francis Pickle Most respectfully informs the Public in general, that he has opened in Norton, King's County for the accommodation of those that may be pleased to honor him with their custom, where the best of attention will be given.
I am reallly astonished at all the info. that has been collected on the Dickie family! However, I have been to the grave of Hector Dickie Sr.'s wife Sarah, and it just says Sarah, wife of Hector Dickie--I know that Hector Jr. married Ann Walker, but would like proof that Hector Sr's wife Sarah was also a Walker: With their close connection to the Walker family, she probably was a Walker! She is buried in St. Abner's Cemetery in Brantford Twp., Brant County, Ontario.
Phyllis Wildeman

Hi Julie-Ann,
James Dickie (your William Wilson Dickie's eldest brother), was my Great Great Grandfather, so I imagine we're the same Dickie generation.
I live in West Yorkshire now, but was born on a farm near East Kilbride. Spent a lot of time as a kid up there, so I'm familiar with Rutheran and Rigg farms near Chapelton. These feature in my family line for a number of generations.
As you may know William Wilson Dickie is well documented in that area as a significant engineer and agriculturalist.
Would be very interested in your line, are you linked to the Ayrshire Dickie's and the drop forging company ?

Regards
David Dickie dkyyks@aol.com

1) I don't know where Tarbolton is, but my Dickies hale directly from Dalry where they were in various skilled trades for several centuries.
2) My specific line were wood workers of various sorts. My Robert Dickie came to southern Illinois (Bunker Hill in Macoupin County) sometime after the Civil War, was censed in 1870 and died the following November of disease. He was a wagon maker and had gone out of town to assess the hardwoods in a neighboring forest when he was stricken. He was married to Mary Patrick. Their children were born in Illinois.
3) Robert came from a family full of Thomas and William and John first names. I haven't pinned down his parents in Dalry yet. *But,* if you're interested, I have a copy of court procedings from Glascow in the 1300s that show Dickies in charge of the water works there. :)
Happy Hunting In 2007!

They had 6 kids, Robert (1803), Archibald (1805), Jean (1807), Alexandor (1809), Cunningham (1811), and Margaret (1814). Cunningham married a Robert Campbell in 1832. She died in Irvine, in 1893. I would like to find out more about this family and trace if further back, if possible. Thanks for any help.
Judy, in Alberta, Canada.

Hi Lynn,

I will try to send this for the 3rd time! I live in Michigan & we have been having power outages due to storms. Every time I work w/this, the electric goes!

The dates are right. But William Dickie was born in Canada (about 1850-51, d. 1931 in Shelby, MI) & had brothers that moved to N.C. I know he visited them. There were a contingent of Dickie's that settled in the Henderson, N.C. area (NOT Hendersonville, N.C.)

Wm. Dickie married Annie Hugh Rankin on June 29, 1882. They had 5 children: James Bradley Muir (b. 1883, d. 1952); Samuel Rankin (b. 1887, d. 195?), Annie May (b. 1889, d.1891); Annie May (b. May 30, 1892, d. 1980) and Donald Hugh (b. July 2, 1894, d. May 5, 1970). This was all written by my Dad (Donald) back in the 1940's or early 1950's. There is more, but I'm not sure how in depth you are going.

William Dickie was a farmer & they lived about 2 miles north of Shelby, Oceana County, Michigan. I have seen the farm & it must have been a hard life.

If you would like more, please let me know. My e-mail is: adholmes44@hotmail.com Looking forward to hearing from you.

Annie D. Holmes

I had to laugh at some of what Joseph Howard wrote as this is stuff I look for as it can have clues in it to finding more information out and can add some spice to our tree for more interesting reading when we write I Thank him for adding all of what he wrote Is he a Dickie family member I wonder but very interesting reading if any one wishs to contact me at my web mail it is sweetdar7@comcast.net There is alot of Dickie listed in New Brunswick early files not all but some that this can help me James and Sarah are for sure in Lapeer Census as is a Charles I just could not figure out there order as this paper posted will be of great help to me.
DICKIE, James b. 1873

I am looking for James Dickie born 03/07/1873 parents were Isabella and James dickie married 6/6/1862 in Bridgeton Glasglow (I cannot find records on this other than this county registration on the child James). I cannot read the maiden name on the county records but do know it was registerd in the district of park county of lanark.
Any info in this direction would be helpful. I do know this James Dickie (child) married a Bessie Deborah Rowe and they had a son named Elliott - this childs name was changed to James somewhere between the 1900 and 1910 census in the USA.
Thx
Michelle
